About
Iron Horse Golf Course is laid out in the floodplain of Fossil Creek, an area loaded with woods and a railroad that divides the property into three tracts. When Dick Phelps designed the golf course he loaded it with par 4s that are over 400 yards. This track has only two par 5s, but you'll get your money's worth as they are virtually impossible to reach in two. Iron Horse's best hole is the 462-yard, par-4 third hole, which is generally a bogey hole for the average golfer.

That dirt is stretching all through the fairways. Trust me. It was “made to be like that.” Almost ever other fairway had this or gravel. Photo submitted by u000007236592 on 08/02/2026

Lots of ground under repair on every fairway. This was one of the better ones. Photo submitted by Ken9948006 on 03/27/2023

Iron Horse Course review
If you have the money and want to play an average round, then this course is for you. But if you don’t and you’re just starting I would consider a different course. The greens are very good, but the fairways are really bad. The fairways have many dirt patches with a lot of rockey terrain and need much improvement. As well, some fairways penalize you for being even slightly off on your tee shots with tree locations and green locations. Overall, I enjoyed the course but for $60 ($50 ish plus taxes) I would recommend a different course until improvements or the spring when the grass is more grown in.
Average
Course has a great layout, just so much rough areas and hardpan lies. Several holes penalize you for hitting the fairway. Hopefully they can get some grass on this course because it used to be great.
Fun Course
The layout was a bit cramped on holes 3-5 & 7-10. It was a bit confusing the first time but the signs were helpful. There were some fairways that had large dirt patches in the middle, but all the greens were perfect. I will definitely go back.
Don’t listen to others, find out for yourself!
Still considering myself a novice, I found Iron Horse has its challenges but not overly intimidating. I will say that hole 11 was the most intimidating, seeing that it runs right along the side of the highway, a pull of the tee shot and your ball could wind up on I-820 (no pressure).
However, the reason for the title of this review stems from the condition of the course was better than expected. Considering a conversion I had prior to Sep 17th, and I would play and recommend Iron Horse golf club.
The staff is great as well!!!
Stay Away !!
Paid $80.00 to play a cow pasture. The fairways are in such bad shape, it was like playing in a dirt field. The greens are in good shape. I do not recommend this course at all. Never written a review but had to because of the terrible shape of the course
