Great value, quirky, natural golf course - recommended

I played Alton GC once before with a mate who lives down that way and remember loving it. Lots of raised tees and greens, and dog legs left, right and - err - not centre! So, when I was looking for somewhere to play en route back to London after picking up my golf-mad son from Portsmouth uni, Alton was an easy choice. This may not be one of the better-known courses designed by James Braid, but so much the better for that! This is a very friendly club and although only 9 holes, it does boast reasonably different tees for the front and back 9s, either 50-100 yards apart by width (or more for the 1st and 10th), or by being 50 or so yards lee or more depth (generally shorter for the back 9). Strongly recommended.

Excellent Course Quality

You can tell Alton Golf Club have spent most of their money where it matters - the course. Greens run true, fairways and tee boxes are in excellent condition. You’ll need to be fit or grab a buggy as this course has some ridiculously steep hills so get ready for excellent views and workout. The course is 9 holes but with 18 tee boxes, some of which are so different that it’s almost like playing a new hole entirely. Very friendly staff too.

Alton Towers above the rest

Apart from a group of 80+ year old members behind us who thought they were Scottie, Tiger, Rory and Bryson but more likely started in the 1986 movie Cocoon we loved it. The members were rude to our sons who played with us but we pacified them by saying they’ll be dead soon. The lady behind the bar was fantastic!

Worm holes and autumn mist

Enjoyable round booked on the day. £30 for 18 holes is good value for this area of Hampshire . There is always a friendly welcome and the course is a challenge, more so at the moment as it is playing longer than usual due to the damp and lack of run . Usually the course is well drained but the worms have been very active this year and this combined with damp weather and light winds has made the last 3 holes quite muddy. The greens however are in very good condition. Flags sensibly tend to be nearer the edges of the green at this time of year and this adds to the challenge. Make use of the compressed air wands next to the clubhouse to clean your golf shoes and enjoy warming up by the wood burning stove in the cosy club house with a bacon roll and a pint.

Very well maintained

Fantastic greens, very well maintained course. Clubhouse staff very friendly and stayed late to offer us drinks.

This is a very hilly course, walking between holes is tough. This also makes some holes quite challenging due to slopes.

Challenging course

Fantastic little course. Thought it would be straight forward due to the distance but it was very tough. The greens were in unbelievable condition. Will definitely be going back to try and score better.
