3rd Tee and Green Great Hole Photo submitted by Ravensleigh on 08/19/2015
Great course
Our second time of playing, course was in great condition, greens were super fast and a great test
Excellent Course Quality
You can tell Alton Golf Club have spent most of their money where it matters - the course. Greens run true, fairways and tee boxes are in excellent condition. You’ll need to be fit or grab a buggy as this course has some ridiculously steep hills so get ready for excellent views and workout. The course is 9 holes but with 18 tee boxes, some of which are so different that it’s almost like playing a new hole entirely. Very friendly staff too.
Alton Towers above the rest
Apart from a group of 80+ year old members behind us who thought they were Scottie, Tiger, Rory and Bryson but more likely started in the 1986 movie Cocoon we loved it. The members were rude to our sons who played with us but we pacified them by saying they’ll be dead soon. The lady behind the bar was fantastic!
An enjoyable round
Greens were in good condition. Quite hilly so good exercise. 9 holes done twice. Some good challenges doglegs etc. An enjoyable round if not that long a course, good value.
Worm holes and autumn mist
Enjoyable round booked on the day. £30 for 18 holes is good value for this area of Hampshire . There is always a friendly welcome and the course is a challenge, more so at the moment as it is playing longer than usual due to the damp and lack of run . Usually the course is well drained but the worms have been very active this year and this combined with damp weather and light winds has made the last 3 holes quite muddy. The greens however are in very good condition. Flags sensibly tend to be nearer the edges of the green at this time of year and this adds to the challenge. Make use of the compressed air wands next to the clubhouse to clean your golf shoes and enjoy warming up by the wood burning stove in the cosy club house with a bacon roll and a pint.
Staff were very friendly and accommodating, members in the course were helpful as it was our first visit.
There had been some rain in the morning but the course was in great condition.
9 holes at Alton
Interesting course. Just nine holes played but some challenging holes.
Quality little 9-hole course
Hadn’t played Alton before but was surprised at the condition it was in, short course, tight fairways, greens running really well, true and fast
Very well maintained
Fantastic greens, very well maintained course. Clubhouse staff very friendly and stayed late to offer us drinks.
This is a very hilly course, walking between holes is tough. This also makes some holes quite challenging due to slopes.
Great fun
An interesting and fun 9 hole course . Wouldn’t recommend the 18 twice round is a little boring, super friendly staff and great greens
Challenging course
Fantastic little course. Thought it would be straight forward due to the distance but it was very tough. The greens were in unbelievable condition. Will definitely be going back to try and score better.
Very hilly
This course would suit a mountain goat. Very steep in places and loose gravel/ shingle on paths potentially dangerous. Need to be fit. Better signage to next hole would be advantageous for new or infrequent players. (9 hole played off two tees for a full round). Fairway grass was cut a little on the long side making finding your ball difficult even after a good tee shot. Fallen leaves (lot of trees) didn’t help but that’s to be expected this time of year. On the plus side, greens were very good, course was interesting with lovely views. Staff and players were friendly. Could be better with a few tweaks. Remember to pack oxygen and climbing ropes on your first visit 😁
Great challenging course.
A great challenging course with great views. Very peaceful and a great pace of play with no one really in front or catching you up behind.
Only downside to get a full 5 star review was the greens had just recovered from maintenance and have only been seeded for 2 weeks so we’re quite rough, sandy and hard to judge.
Alton Golf Course last minute choice
Alton is a 9 hole course that you play from different tees to make the 18.
The staff make you feel very welcome on arrival and are very accommodating (I arrived a little early and they managed to get me out a little ahead of time).
The course itself is in very good condition, scenic, well laid out and quite challenging in parts. I particularly liked the par 3 12th (hole3) and the following par 4 4th/13th both of which requires a drive over a deep gully.
The clubhouse is functional with a small bar area. There is a small veranda with tables overlooking the 9th/18th green and an indoor seating area if the weather is not so good.
A little more/better signage would be beneficial I think, perhaps some yardage markers, and a chap who took a buggy seemed a bit confused about where to go from the car park, but overall this was a very pleasant experience.
I shall definitely come back.
