Olmos Basin Golf Course

Wow! Olmos Basin just went through a renovation and what a facelift. This course is gorgeous! I tip my hat to the golf course designer/architect and crew behind the renovation. They did a superb job. Although the course got a complete facelift it maintained its character. My absolute favorite part of the renovation was the new greens, with the new and challenging undulations. And boy do the putts roll so true and nice. All I'm hoping is that the greenkeepers take good care of this going forward, because it is a gem that's going to get better if they take good care of it. Also, the new pro shop and facilities look super nice as well. This course went from a three star to a five star. I definitely recommend it.

The course was closed the last few weeks; therefore, one would think time for the maintenance crews to get things “in shape”.

Well I was wrong and disappointed in the greens. Many sand filled holes, but not much grass. One star is all I can give.

Staff is short due to clubhouse being closed, but that didn’t prevent the starter/marshal from reminding our foursome to stay more than six feet apart (we were already complying). Of course, I’m sure he didn’t say anything to the slow group in front of us - a full three holes behind!

Come on San Antonio, you can do better.

I've played this course multiple times over the past couple of years, and I haven't had many complains. However, this time around, I have noticed that this course has taken a nose dive. Alamo City golf trail has done good work improving its courses (as can be seen with Northern Hills and Riverside), however with Olmos it seems like they have forgotten about it. The greens are in horrible shape, full of sand, with barely any grass leaves growing on them. A golf course with bad greens is not a golf course. I hope the ACGT folks give this track much deserved TLC, I probably won't return until then.

Went to play nine holes at Olmos Basin and was not impressed at all on the condition of the course! Fairways were thin with little to no grass on them in sports, greens were ok but needs some serious work done to them. Some had muddy patches on them and get this the entire second green was sanded over with huge holes punched in it and there was no warning that this green was like this. At least the person working in the pro shop could of told me about this and I wouldn't have possibly played here. And I dont know why but part of the ninth fairway was wet. I have seen this course in much better shape than it was when I played it. I know its winter time and expect dryness but not super thin fairways with almost no grass on them. And you would think with this course being the most played of the Alamo City Golf Trail courses that more time and effort would be put into it to make it in much better shape than it was. I can tell you I WONT be going back to this course anytime soon. Sad to see such a great course be neglected like it is. Hope something is done soon to fix the repairs it needs.

Olmos Basin Golf Course is part of the Alamo City Golf Trail, the eight municipal golf courses of San Antonio, Texas. The course is set on a fairly flat tract of ground about seven miles north of downtown. Four sets of tees ranging from 6,846 to 4,612 yards allow a wide range of golfer age and skill levels to enjoy the course. We played the course the first week of December, so there were no leaves on the small trees scattered alongside the fairways, and the grass was dormant for the most part. The rough was less than two inches high, which on most holes made it easy to swing away with no fear. No doubt conditions would be much more difficult during the warm season. A creek meanders through the property and comes into play on several holes, but it was mostly dry bed when we played. Being from the Upper Midwest and accustomed to playing bent grass, ryegrass, and bluegrass, it was difficult to adjust to the Bermuda grass on the course, especially when trying to chip from just off the greens. The ball sometimes sank all the way to the ground in a gnarly mess, and other times it seemed to stay suspended in midair on top of the grass. This led to chunky chips some times while at other times the wedge went completely under the ball, leaving it in the same, or a more difficult lie. The front nine holes were fairly straightforward and not terribly difficult, although it was necessary to study the layout to determine where best to aim the tee shot on the doglegs. The back nine was much more interesting, especially starting on the 11th, a 460 yard par 5 that turns sharply to the right. The inside of the dogleg is protected by a thick stand of trees and a small pond, but long hitters are still tempted to try to carry the trees in order to have a wedge to the green. For most of us, the more prudent shot is on the left side of the fairway, in order to have a third shot wedge approach. The 377 yard par 4 13th sets up in a similar fashion, with the fairway ending about 270 yards out and a second fairway and the green set at a 90 degree angle to the first fairway. The difficulty here is that the creek runs all along the right side of the fairway, so a little too much fade on the tee shot may lead to a lost ball and penalty shot. The finishing hole is a surprisingly reachable 493 yard par 5. Playing to the middle of the fairway leaves a wide open second shot to set up an eagle putt. (The dry weather may have left the fairway a little hard so the ball may have rolled more than normal.) While not comparable to a top tier resort course, Olmos Basin is fun to play and a good value for a winter getaway.

Course was just under water from a rain a day before they charged full price and cart path only. tee boxes where so long and beat up some fairways had their problems too. greens were just ok and 1 was not even usable with some kind of heat disease problem with grass. Course wreaked with standing water maybe sewage? My rating up top were being nice it was a waste of money and time. It was almost $50 to play too.

Good straight forward course. Cheap, only payed $26 to walk. Pace of play was annoying because they allow 5 somes. Greens were true and the fairways were fine. But I will never go back and play because of all the litter in the creeks. It was absolutely terrible. C'mon San Antonio, have some respect. I would not recommend this course because the litter is an embarrassment.

Greens definitely slower than most area courses. Green #2 was in bad shape, but others were ok. Fairways were in good shape and rough was fairly forgiving. Have played here a number of times and it is one of the most forgiving courses with chances to score lower than your handicap.

North of downtown San Antonio, lying dead in the middle of a flood basin, sits George Hoffman's Olmos Basin Municipal Golf Course. (Hoffman was also involved with the "new" 9 holes at Riverside and the back-nine re-do of A. W. Tillinghast's Brackenridge when they let Hwy 281 cut straight through the course.) The course is heavy with Live Oak trees, pecan and white oak, along with cedar elms. Olmos Creek meanders through the course coming into play on multiple holes.

This was one of the courses I grew up on: It was a stalwart track for what was then JGAST - Junior Golf Association of South Texas. We played golf here in junior high as well as high school golf tournaments. And it has hosted innumerable San Antonio Men's and Women's Amatuer Championships. While the terrain is quite flat, the requirement of shotmaking remains. The green complexes are not overly difficult, but the greens ARE quite large. It's still a golf course that requires your attention and respect.

I had a great time playing this course, the greens are in great shape, the pace of play was good, the staff was very friendly and they had reasonable prices!

Course was in great condition. Greens rolled very well and fairways in great shape. Started to rain heavily and lasted about 1 hour. After playing 4 holes was told the course would be closing due to bridges flooding over. Disappointing to get only 4 holes in and surprised bridges flooded so quickly, but it is called a "basin" for a reason. Call first if it has rained recently. Was able to contact golfnow to get help with refund for round.

I put Olmos Basin in third place after Cedar Creek and Brackenridge. Olmos Basin is right across the street the highway from The Quarry. You can pay twice the price at The Quarry or half the price at Olmos and have just as much of an enjoyable time. The course condition was pretty good. Fairways and greens were in excellent shape. TIP: keep your drives in the fairways because otherwise you'll lose a lot of balls in the rough. The greens are fairly slow, balls don't break a lot, so make sure you putt fairly straight and with good speed.

Good course for the value.

It's amazing the course was playable. Fairways and greens were wet and the pace was slow due to the wet conditions. Without much roll, the course played tougher than normal. Olmos staff and maintanence have done an excellent job with the course this year and their hard work showed because the course was open yesterday after very heavy rainfall.

My buddy and I held a consistent 3 hour pace for the majority of the round. The pace is awesome if you're okay with playing during the hottest part of the day. The course layout is forgiving and fun for the average golfer. It's hard to beat the price at 24 dollars. It's listed as 19 on the app but once they charge for the convenience fee it bumps it up. The only suggestion I would suggest would be to have these cheap rounds available for a single player or 9 holes.

Great Municipal course in San Antonio the layout is pretty challenging and the course is usually in good condition. The only improvement I would suggest is to have a real snack bar/restaurant instead of this being combined in the Pro Shop. They could also use a cart girl for drinks and food on the course as well.
For the price thru Golf Now you can't beat it. Golf Now booking is great and easy to navigate I will be using this on a regular basis

Olmos Park is an average, fun to play golf course. It is a great course for beginners or players of a low skill level From the white tees.

The blue tees offer slightly more challenge.

The ladies will like it because it is in their skill range, and the ladies tees are properly placed for the average ladies skill level.

Fun golf course great value. Pretty challenging for a muni...greens were great!!

Fairways were great, greens were even better! Would definitely play here again soon.

The rough is US open style. Lost 2 balls in high rough. Pleasant day with a good playing companion. Greens have plenty of grain.
