The Quarry Golf Course

About
The land that now provides a home to Quarry Golf Course was formerly the abandoned Alamo Cement plant. Keith Foster converted this unique location into a challenging layout with a links-style front nine and a back nine that plays entirely through an abandoned rock quarry with walls over a 100 feet tall on three sides. The first half of the golf course features plays through open fields of rolling hills with native grasses and a near absence of trees. Creeks and streams come into play on six holes of the front nine. The quarry pit on the back nine is truly the most unique feature on the golf course. Quarry Golf Course's most dramatic hole is the 17th, which requires a tee shot over a deep ravine that is framed by a 40-foot waterfall.

Unique Course
I played The Quarry Golf Course on a tip from a friend. It is an intriguing layout featuring a links-style front nine and locating the back nine in the abandoned Alamo Cement Company quarry that was closed in the 1990s and transformed to what World Traveler magazine regards at “the #7 Most Unique Golf Course in the world.” A friendly staff and excellent playing conditions added to the experience. The layout is fair and playable. The par 3s are varied in distance and aesthetics. Some of the longer par 4s are among the toughest low handicap holes on the course. Capture memorable photos along the way (use your panoramic mode on occasion) and then quickly refocus on the task at hand. “Remember the Alamo!” is the local historic battlecry. And I’ll not forget The Quarry Golf Course either, located just 10 minutes from downtown San Antonio and 4 minutes from the international airport. Note: A complete greens restoration project is planned for May to September 2024 and the course will be closed. The greens are in very good condition, but after 30-years they will be replaced next summer. So, play it while you can before the project begins.
Don’t play here anytime soon
When you pay $100 for golf you expect greens that you can putt on. Not the case. Longer than any carpet and no comments from staff. Acting like we were lucky to be playing there. Not the right attitude for any golf course.
Wow what a beautiful layout! Loved the concept of turning a Quarry into a Golf Course....Beautiful setting..
Great golf experience
Very nice golf experience. Front nine was like many other golf courses & the back nine is one of the most unique settings you will ever find.
Excellent as Always
Had a great time at the Quarry as always. The weather got windy and cold quick mid round which added to the difficulty, but fun nonetheless. Shot an 88.
Beautiful vista's, little close to the freeway on the front 9. Great service and staff was pleasant. Looking forward to next time.
Different but good track!
The course is in good shape! The greens were very slow for my taste. Need to be mowed and rolled. I’m used to rolling them on 10.5 to 11, so may not be a fair assessment. The locals may like them slow!!
I would for sure play it again next time I’m in town.
The service and the staff was excellent!!
Penny Pinching
As the prices have risen post Covid and the increase in popularity in the game, the management has taken and removed certain amenities, such as free range balls pre-round. I understand supply and demand, but was bit disappointed. It’s funny how optics play major factor in customer satisfaction. It’s few dollars; however, with increase in prices and with reduction in amenities, it’s a shame how the trend has gone negative. Ending with a positive comment at least, the course has consistently been one of the better sites in San Antonio.
Great course
The course is beautiful and one of the most unique places I have played. The service and facilities are top notch. The greens were in good condition but a little slow for my liking that day. The fairways looked a little stressed and had some bare spots. I think I would give it 5 stars all the way around for about $89 but for the price of $139 I thought the course conditions should have been pristine. But for the experience I highly recommend The Quarry.
Horrific!
Extreme disappointment is the best description. The greens were in terrible shape. Fairways and bunkers, OK. The most offensive part was the scheduling and on course marshal's actions. It took us 5.5 hours to play a 4 hour course due to the addition of players to our two-some. One that had been playing for "less than two years, once a month" and the other after we had already hit and were exiting the first tee. Twice during the front nine, the marshal requested we let a tthree-some play through as there "was no-one behind them" - not true and we were on hole #8. It was back-to-back three-somes. I have been playing for 60 years and never seen anything so mismanaged. Stay completely clear of this course until you see the "Under New Management" sign out front!
Great value for price.
Layout is great. The greens are all defect-free. The greens are slow cause they are having drought issues, so cant cut them short and roll them. The fairways are in good shape and bunkers are well kept. Would play again and recommend without hesitation.
Very Nice
Price is a little higher than expected but we loved it and plan to go back soon.
Would love to play again
The front 9 had some tricky tee shots that I think playing it again would allow for more strategy off the tee box. The layout was beautiful and the back 9 was one of the most unique 9’s I have ever played. I would strongly recommend this course.
