La Loma at Fort Sam Houston Golf Course
About
The La Loma course is one of two 18-hole, championship courses at the historic Fort Sam Houston. The facility hosted the Texas Open in the '50s and '60s, making it the only military facility to ever host a PGA event. La Loma has its fair share of challenges but overall the other course at the club, Salado del Rio, is the more demanding of the two. The fairways are tree-lined but not as tight as on the other golf course, lending a more forgiving quality to La Loma. The greens are medium in both size and speed and there are strategically placed bunkers throughout the course. Fort Sam Houston also has a practice chipping green and a lighted driving range for golfers to use.

Sam Houston golf course
I love playing here. The greens are soft, plush and quick. The par 4’s can be challenging if you are on the wrong color tee box. Not a lot of sand but strategically placed trees, ponds and doglegs.
My biggest grievances is too many players don’t fix their fairway and putting green divots and don’t utilize the cart paths but instead drive down the middle of the fairways. Give Sam Houston a try, I hope you enjoy it.
Beautiful course
This course was in great shape, especially for Texas winter, the grass was moist and the greens were as pure as they could be, well maintained and friendly staff. Highly recommend 10/10 for the price, can’t beat it!
Stars and Stripes feelings
My review is strictly from my personal experience and this course is by far the best value there is the course is not made up of the finest turf but the maintenance is very good and your ball will always have turf under it no bare patches that I saw and the greens are slower than average but look great and they are responsive to shots into the greens I got to hand it to the team that runs this golf course above and beyond average
Just one guys opinion
The greens were spotty, some fast some slow. Fairways were clean and green. Facilities were absolutely gorgeous but not cleaned very well. Beautiful locker rooms and showers and a huge facility but inside and out were dingy. Outside needs a pressure washer and the inside needs a good scrubbing. Carts had beautiful seats but no one had cleaned those carts in what looked like years. Coffee spills everywhere that a basic cleaning could make a huge difference.
Good day on the links
This course is a fun layout and it’s very well maintained. The greens were receptive and consistent. Played 18 in well under 4 hours on a busy holiday. I’ll be back for sure
FSH Golf very good course but staff treats Golf Now like second class citizens.
Very good course, you get an electric cart with your GOLFNOW tee time. Cart was good. Greens were excellent except for one in back on Salado side, flood damage is what I was told. Fairways were fine, no issues. The check in staff at the register can be less than friendly. They really don't appreciate Golf Now patrons. If you can put your thick skin on and brush off the ungrateful attitudes, then I would highly recommend the course. I like Salado side better than the La Loma side.
Nicer than public courses!
Very happy playing on Base courses. Well kept up, friendly staff. Nice fairways and putting greens. Will definitely include this course in our rotation!
Great greens!
Great pace of play. The only two inconveniences were no cart girls available for cold beverages and golf carts weren’t provided till you are 5 minutes from tee time. Then you have to rush and go get your clubs loaded to be on the tee box by your tee time. Course was great overall!
Excellent Greens
The greens were in great shape. Long fairways and challenging pin placements. Played La Loma side with 3 other players. Keep up the good work fellas!
Rude Dude
Sunday 08/03 I had a 2:10 tee time, I was over an hour early and the guy with the red hair and beard has such an attitude because I booked through the Golf Now app. I pay and got a bucket of practice balls and left. Now it close to my tee time, he can’t multitask and is taking forever checking out people who are ALL buying drinks before their round. I have two beers and a Power Aid, I pay and when I go to get ice it’s empty. He informs me they don’t have any ice because there was a tournament that morning. I wouldn’t have spent $10 on beer if there was no way to keep it closed. There should have been a sign or something. And I don’t think people should be out in 100+ heat with no way to keep drinks cold. Luckily I had my 40 oz water jug filled with ice water but being out of ice by 2 pm on a Sunday with the temperature the way it is was just unacceptable.
Not as good as I remembered it
The Course was not in good shape. Fairways where fair but the greens where all different in quality- some fast some slow. Some Parts of the course where very damp due to watering. There was also no Drink Carts on the Course what with the actual heat was disappointing.
