Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Friday afternoon at Greatwood
Course condition was good though the greens are faster than usual (especially with all the rains in recent days). Great value for money!
Its better now
Course condition and green are much better now. The frequent rains helped golf courses around the area. This course has an excellent layout . My favorite hole is 4 Par 3. Back nine challenge your club selections.
Good but not Great . . . Wood
Played Greatwood on a very hot Monday afternoon. The course layout is very challenging. As a first time player, it was helpful to have played with someone who knew the course. The greens and fairways were in good condition. The extended rough areas? Not so much.
I found the layout challenging. The course length is not the issue but the undulations and hidden portions of the fairway.
Only found one or two water coolers oin the course. Thankfully, the server in the grill was generous with handing out ice and water.
Because of the current condtion of the course and its' unique holes, I would only rate the course as worth $30-35 a round.
Dry as a Dino Bone!
They need some rain worst than us up in Spring right now! Cracks in the fairways up and around some greens, easy to lose your balls in them. Ponds drying up. Yikes!!
Got stuck in a rain sandwich
Rain began a few minutes ahead of my 3 pm tee time, stopped four holes, then it came down again harder about 6 pm covering my last two holes. Greens were in good shape despite some of my putts leaving rooster tails on the rain holes. Hitting the approach on the damp 10th fairway? Not so fair. Next to impossible lifting the shot on a wet downslope over a lake 150 yards out.
Good pace of play.
Good course for a quick round. Great pace of play in my 3 times here
Not what it used to be
I was so looking forward to playing this course because I had fond memories of playing it when I was in High School (25 years ago). I remember it being a beautiful, yet challenging course. I was so saddened to see how it has deteriorated. The fairways were brown from lack of water. The clubhouse was old and run down. The cart paths and restrooms were in disrepair. It took 5 1/2 hours to play a round. It’s just not kept up to the standard I remember. It’s just sad to see what it’s become. It could be a grand course.
Course in bad shape
It's probably my 5th or so time playing this course. This most recent time (7/20/22) the fairways are in awful shape. We are going through a dry period so I understand the course being dry, but other than the tee boxes and greens, nothing is being watered.
The pro shop fills the need and the bartender who is there every time I've gone is a good guy. Very polite and accommodating. No complaints about the staff.
There was pretty much no one on the course when I went so if you enjoy playing at a slower pace by yourself then there's no better time than now at Greatwood. Outside of that, I'd find another course to play it until we have some more rain to liven up the course conditions.
Worst course I’ve ever played
This course is in deplorable condition. I’ve never seen anything like it. Do not go here unless you like playing off dirt. I was warned but forgot the warning. It is a real shame because the course seems like a great layout. Whoever owns this course needs to sell it to a group that cares.
dry
The ground was so dry that you couldn't even get a tee in the ground. They do not water the course.
Very poor shape for the money
Worst golf course I’ve ever played
It is clear that this is a great layout but there is virtually no maintenance. The grass is mostly dead with many bare spots. Save your money and play somewhere else where they take care of the course.
Extremely poor condition
I say this still flying high from the best round of golf in my life. The course is in bad shape. The greens were OK, but how on earth can you justify charging more than $20 to play a round of golf here? Clean up your tee boxes. It was peppered with peoples broken tees likely dating back to the housing market collapse. I saw rakes next to the bunkers but I couldn't figure out what they were used for. My suggestion is to find a different course to play until they lower their prices and/or get their act together.
