Greatwood Golf Club
About
Greatwood is known for its white sand bunkers and impressive par 3s, three of which play right at or over 200 yards. The 1989 Carlton Gipson design features elevated tees and greens that sandwich plush fairways and are contoured with mounds.
The 434-yard par 4 hole 5 is one difficult par, featuring a fairways loaded with bunkers and involves water on the approach. No. 18 goes 576, yards. While the tee shot is fairly standard, the second shot must land short of a plateau and might involve a blind approach shot if placed too far to the left. The intimidating approach plays into a green surrounded by water on three sides.
Getting there : From Hwy. 59 south, turn left on Crab River Rd., then make a left onto the other side of Hwy. 59. Look for Greatwood Pkwy. and make another left when you get there.

Disappointing
My father and I drove a long way to play this course. We called ahead and asked if the greens were decent. We were told they were in good shape. They were literally unplayable. Like playing plinko. Worst shape I’ve ever putted on. On top of that the pin placements were all angled. I’ve played hundreds of courses and this was the worst as far as greens keeping. Don’t waste your time and money.
Great layout and tons of potential BUT…
Great layout and some challenging holes, but course isn’t in great shape. Greens were nearly non-existent and fairway grass was thin. Lots of room for improvement.
Course was in terrible shape. Greens were like putting on cobblestone and looked like a patchwork quilt.
For $60… play somewhere else.
Texas weather is unpredictable to say the least. Doesn’t give best chances to grow grass, that being said Course conditions were subpar. Fairways need a ton of work, very rock hard, unforgiving and uneven. Like driving on moguls. Greens covered in sand and very bumpy. Maybe 3-4 decent greens with no sand on them. Tee boxes were okay, weren’t difficult to find a hitting spot on. Bunkers play was good, no standing water or ground under repair. Cart girl was active, saw her twice. Practice facilities are horrendous, can’t even putt on practice green, driving range is ok, big enough to find a small patch of grass to get some cuts on. Went around 2pm on Sunday and finished in 4 hours while letting 2 singles play on ahead of our foursome. Tried calling the shop to book over the phone and no one answered, just rang for minutes.
The bottom has fell out
Course is in bad to terrible shape. No other way to say it. Greens are sand pits with disease and weeds. Fairways the same. There used to be a rough but it disappeared. The practice greens and driving range are equally as disappointing.
I have lived in the neighborhood 3+ years and I am officially embarrassed that a neighborhood this nice has to live with an ownership group who clearly has no desire to put a penny back into the experience.
Course/property has so much potential. It’s a shame.
Rough shape
The course design is great but the greens are in pretty rough shape. Played there about 15 months ago and they were in great shape so maybe the maintenance fell off… hopefully they can rectify the greens soon.
Terrible course conditions
The course is not well maintained, eg the green looks like a sand box, the tee box needs watering unless you use a hammer to insert the tee, etc.

Absolutely fantastic experience. Fairways were a nice mixture of hard pan, weeds, crab grass, and actual grass allowing the golfer to work on hitting approach shots from a variety of lies.
Really like the crab grass fringe that gently flows into the sand greens forcing you to always chip to jump over the random weeds on the green. My short game has never been tested so thoroughly.
The average golfer is going to walk away from Greatwood feeling like someone just stole $50 from them and that’s the real genius behind the course: Only the great ones will realize that they’ve just overcome every garbage situation that can happen on the course.
The only negatives were that the inside staff are total dicks and the hot dogs cost $3.50.
Current Green Condition are terrible
Current green condition is terrible. fairways are decent.
O how times have changed
I came to Texas in 2005, and played this course before. It was soooo nice to play here, the greens were very good.
My round was dreadful! Sand on the greens, no even areas to putt. Looks like a "city municipal " course
Throughly disappointed in the way that the course looked, needs some major improvements
First and last
I wouldn’t even call those putting surfaces “greens”. It’s terrible
Bad
Course conditions were terrible. Fairways and Greens were horrible.
What a Shame
This was a good golf course, If they hire a great greenskeeper and gave them a big budget it could be a great goat ranch in a month or two. Parking lot rolls better than these greens. Don't waste your time.
Very challenging layout. Bunkers were below average shape and greens were in bad condition.
Poor greens
Don’t play this course until they do something about the greens. They have lost the greens with weeds and over sanding to try and cover the poor conditions
Goat ranch
Everything fairways, greens are un terrible shape. Will not be back. Too bad played it for 20 years.
I had fun
Light winds on a sunny day in the low 80s. I finally had success with pars on 10, 13 and 14. I also did well as I normally do with pars on 3 and 6. The only blemishes we’re the bumpy greens.
