Unique Course worth playing

Really good value and a unique course - no bunkers, ponds or ditches. Overall in pretty condition. Few blind shots but all good fun.

Beware walkers (who are not golfers) and also golfers playing the shared fairways.

No catering or bar service on the monday we played - would have been nice to be told this at the point of booking. Club house and toilets shut when we finished at about 3pm.Pro did sort us out a coffee from the vending machine before we played.

Absolute whopper of a track, more walkers than golfers on the course surprised people haven’t been killed walking around here. People having picnics in fairway, ridiculous. The pro was a nice chap though, shame about his buggy.

Don’t be fooled

Painswick is a fantastic course to play. It is not long but is full of really interesting holes. The condition of the greens yesterday were quite simply excellent. Firm and smooth. The clubhouse was delightful. Great staff, great food and very nicely appointed. We are members of two local clubs so know Painswick GC well but we’re amazed at the quality of what they have developed. Well done we will be back.

Very difficult to navigate

The course had too many shared fairways and blind shots. Also very difficult to find the next tee on several holes. Blind par 3 was dangerous

A good course that could be better with some minor adjustments

On the day we played the rain did not stop. This made the challenge more interesting. There are several par 3 some of which are very blind. There are walkers on the course but I think due to the weather not an issue.

The map of the course is vague and really could do with improvements also some market boards would help. There are no tee markers only painted coloured spots on the ground which when we played were not visible. A nice course which with a few minor tweeks could be a very nice course to play.

a course that demands accurate drives and fairway shots.

If you don't mess up the tee shot you'll more than certainly mess up a fairway shot. If it is not long grass it is an impenetrable gully

A hot day

Extremely hot and so only completed 14 holes. Walkers have no regard for golfers which can cause hold ups. The course is a challenge. Be prepared to lose a few balls

Love the course

Where I love to play golf. Go early to avoid the public who think it’s OK to sit and relax in the middle of the fairway!!

Course is in great condition considering you have the Cotswold Way running through the middle of it.

It’s a challenging course despite being quite short. A perfect tee shot can sometimes turn into a lost ball!

The locals are very friendly and almost all of the members I have met. Shame about the one senior who questioned whether I had paid to play the course, bloomin cheek.

Painswick is a must play golf course. Good luck getting a par on the 6th!

A total joy

Played 29th July on a warm breezy evening for the first time and alone, and didn't know what to expect. I can categorically say it was a complete joy - and all for £12.50!

The holes that play at the top of the course around the beacon and iron age hill fort are wonderful and quirky - they have that lunar look of a links to them despite being atop a hill overlooking Gloucester! Two completely blind par 3s that are nothing more than a flip wedge were a particular highlight. Some great tee shots from elevation over disused quarries were great fun too.

Lost a couple of balls playing alone, but I would recommend this course to anyone: it's short enough for older or new players, welcoming to guests and beginners (super relaxed dress code), and quirky enough for decent players who want to think about width and angles into greens that were better kept than I was expecting (slowish but rolled true). This place would work great as a matchplay course or in a scramble format.

Beware the many walkers as it's on open ground - I just embraced rather than getting annoyed at having to wait 10 minutes on a tee box because some kids were flying their kite in the fairway!

Recommend going on the club's website first and having up a better overhead map than on the scorecard - next tees are hard to find and marked by spray paint instead of posts. They also have a course guide that's helpful in terms of knowing which side of fairways to aim for.

What a great course, lovely staff, friendly members, and superb catering

I was down in Gloucestershire for a few days and this was the final day, I looked at the yardages and reviews and thought I would give it a try, so pleased I did, I was fortunate to get paired up with another visitor who had played before and so happy I did as I think I might have got lost between some greens to tees.

The course was in such good condition, especially the greens. There is no doubt this is a tough course, not only physically, but you really do need to think yourself round, there were quite a few blind approaches, but plenty of space around the greens. You have to get used to the general public wandering around without a care in the world, but the course is well worth a visit, the pro was very welcoming and informative and we met a few members on the way round, who were very helpful with their knowledge.

I was very impressed with the course, and at the end of the round, the catering supplied at the club house called The Waypoint was second to none, proper home cooking, but to a high standard and quality as well as totally Covid compliant, they made you feel very welcome and the food was incredibly good, I would eat here, even if I was there for the golf.

All in all a fantastic experience, well done to all at the club and the caterers

Painswick

Very hilly and some totally blind shots. A lot of old quarry workings to cross between tee box and fairway. No bunkers or water but a great number of walkers to negotiate as this course has numerous public footpaths crossing it including the Cotswold Way national trail.

Do not go alone!

If you haven't played here before, don't go alone! Even with the map on the back of the card it is very difficult to find the tee boxes as there are no tee markers, just spray paint/chalk on the ground. The ladies' tees would have been impossible to find if I hadn't joined up with the group behind who caught me up after 5 holes of wandering about in frustration!

There are also a lot of blind holes and crossing fairways so make sure you go with a member or join up with someone on the tee.

It is a short course but there is quite a lot of trekking up and down hills, so be prepared with a light bag if carrying!

The course is crossed by several roads and walkers paths so I had a few long waits on the tee while waiting for a parties of school children to clear the fairway!

That said, the members were very friendly and the course is interesting, to say the least! It is a challenging test of golf -not for the novice golfer - as there are lots of gullies to carry, small spaces on the fairway to land the ball and small greens. A good challenge best for a skilled golfer who doesn't hit wayward tee shots!

First time at Painswick

No bunkers on this course ( save for the practice area! )

A tricky compact course set around an iron age hill fort with wonderful views over the Cotwolds to the east and the welsh mountains in the west. Challenging rough and many hole over hills and out of site. Lost 12 balls between us! Super bar and restaurant.

Playing on an iron age fort

I loved it. Walked over the Beacon a week ago and saw the course. Had to play it. Did so today with a pal from Edgbaston Golf Club. The course was empty. Challenging in places..lost a few balls!. BUT what a glorious location. The reception at the club could not have been more friendly or helpful. We had a super lunch in the clubhouse before we started and a simply marvellous 18 holes. Some super challenging holes and for a course with no irrigation and at such an elevation the condition of tees fairways and greens was exceptional. I cannot recommend it enough to anyone who wants to experience golf as is was originally played
