Having been past the course a few times I was excited to play it.
Trap placement is very good, makes the course exciting, makes you think about your shots. Greens were well. Maintained and interesting. But what stood out most of all was the length. There are some long par 4s and one very long par 5 on this course. It's also very open so if you have a slice or a hook there's plenty of places to miss.
Would visit again
Challenging course
Lots of hill and lots of water made this an exciting course to play
Really Interesting and Welcoming Course
Enjoyable course. Lots of hills, quite a bit of water and some great holes that make you have to think carefully about where you place the ball - the slopes often totally transform your intended shot. A bit muddy - only to be expected this time of year - with some sparse areas of grass however they are clearly working across the course to maintain and improve this. I will happily return here to play any time I am in the area and look forward to seeing it in the summer. If you are nearby, don’t miss the chance to have a round. Great facilities and all staff that I spoke to at the reception in the lovely cafe area were very welcoming and helpful. It was a pleasure to be there.
Friday round
Nice location with lovely views. It is hilly , but it is in Devon so sort of expected. The ground was very wet and the fairways haven’t been cut so it wasn’t the best conditions. It was probably close to being closed in places as the ground was quite unsafe. Greens were fine a bit slower than I used to but ran pretty true. Clubhouse is nice good choice of food and drinks
Interesting with challenges
The course varied from a gentle challenge in the first to intimidating on the 3rd. Always something new round the corner. Intelligent use of water features and beautifully kept bunkers to avoid.
A great experience
Had not played Portmore before so did not know what to expect. Very welcoming staff, a good variety of golf holes. Course in pretty good condition and good pace of play. All in all a great day out and will definitely be returning
Nice view's
Course in good condition except the greens could be better, deceptively slow and a few greens had bald patches and scrubbing.
Quite a few blind tee shots, so would play a few holes differently the next time
Course has some nice views towards Barnstaple
Holiday Golf
To say the amount of wet weather Devon has had over the last month the course has held up well, and that’s why it got the 4 rating for course condition.
The course (Barum) is a fair test of golf, short but challenging, great surrounding views from the top holes and a couple of lovely looking par 3’s.
Welcoming friendly staff, and a little chat with one of the groundskeepers realising from the accent we were out of town and from Derby he had a little chunter that Exeter have to play at Pride Park on a Tuesday night yet again this season. Up the Rams!!
Anyway, back to the golf, would recommend this course.
A place worth visiting
We booked 18 holes but unfortunately when we arrived we were informed only the back 9 were open . The lady on the reception asked if we wanted to do 9 holes twice or she would give us some tokens for the top tracer . We decided to do both . The top tracer facilities are fantastic we had one bucket consisting of 96 balls then played the course .
The back 9 is very undulating and alot of blind holes so the first time round we hit to the wrong areas (that was my excuse) but the greens were in great condition considering the wet weather we have had recently. Because of the weather the fairways understandably were a tad on the long side but this can't be helped in January.
We will definitely be back in a few months once the orange ball in the sky as done some drying of the course
Something for every H’cap
Lovely mixture of short and long holes, the long make you throttle back to negotiate the hazards and the short tempt you to sling away and go for glory. To get round needs a mix of the two. We caught it after the greens had been worked and I have no complaints, work around the course suggests a course moving forward and I can only applaud this given the economic climate. BZ
Nice Course. Good back 9
Played Portmore Barum course twice in a week whilst visiting area. The greens had just had some treatment so were uneven and sandy, but that's just one of those things. It's a good test for any golfer and the constant change of elevation makes it a good work out. The back 9 isn't your standard parkland course - lots of mounds and large bunkers make you think more. Well worth the green fees.
A fine day for it
The course was in fine condition with it all looking pretty lush and green everywhere, barring some empty bunkers around the course. First time playing the course, there were several cases where weren't sure of where to aim our shots, not helped by the undulations and no apparent signage. Several testing holes and we would come back and play it again.
Daisy's everywhere
Nice course, quite demanding for first time player. Several bunkers out of play. Main disappointment was the amount of daisy's on the course making it frustratingly difficult to ball spot.
