The scenic ranchlands west of Fort Worth are full of rugged canyons, native wildflowers, and impressive elevation changes, all of which are incorporated into Canyon West’s design. Located atop Parker County’s highest summit, this 1997 18-holer incorporates all of those North Texas Hill Country features and more into its design. Waterfalls, miles of streams, exposed rocks, prairie grasses, wildflowers, and loads of oak, pecan, elm, and mesquite trees highlight the landscape.

Elevated tees offer views of the countryside. In addition to the scenery, golfers are welcomed by generous fairways that make this a fairly user-friendly course, especially given its reasonable yardage of 6,653 from the tips and the fact that water comes into play on only about half of the holes.

Other notes: During the week, the course offers seniors a two-for-one green fee. Walking is not allowed.

Getting there : From Ft. Worth, go west on I-20 and take exit 403. Cross left over the freeway and then make a quick right onto the service road. The entrance is 2.5 miles down the road.

Bad greens

This course is really struggling with keeping the greens playable. Fairways are real patchy, lots of dirt area.

The Worst

I’ll start by saying it’s a nice layout. But it ends there. The course conditions were the worst I’ve ever seen in 40 years of playing golf. The greens were unputtable. We decided by the second hole to take automatic 2 putts because any put outside 1 foot was just a guess where the ball might go.

To make the day worse, 2 or 3 holes were cart path only for absolutely no reason. And 3 times our cart shut down with a message saying “too close to the green” s when we were 150 yards out.

A lot of nice courses in DFW, this just isn’t one of them.

Stay away.

Needs work, but has potential…

Of the courses in my area, I like this one the best, and I’m a member at another local club!!! Last summer was hard on the turf and it’s been a cold spring so the POA is abundant, and the Bermuda hasn’t yet really begun to grow. I’ll play here again and hope that they have resources to fertilize and groom the course once the weather turns favorable.

Horrible greens

Overall the course was fun to play. Not extremely challenging for a player of my abilities.

And I do realize it is early spring but the greens were awful. The worst I have ever seen. There is some sort of different grass trying to grow with the bent grass and the ball literally bounces toward the cup as it hits the little tuffs of grass. If they can get that figured out it is a nice coarse.

Great course

Open enough to be forgiving and challenging enough to test the more accomplished. The topographyand winds provide a measure of defense that will punish those unfocused.

Promising course

The course has a very nice layout but the conditions are very rough. Many of the greens are un-puttable due to the poa annua. Many of the fairways is lacking grass. But they appear to be working on these issues. I would like to play again when the course is in better condition.

What happened…

Sad sad day at Canyon West. This course has fallen off the map. I’ve never seen so many weeds on greens in my life at a supposed above par course. Will not be back for a long time. Canyon west was gorgeous just a year ago.. very sad.

Disappointed

I played on 4/2/2023. The greens were awful on the front nine. every fairway was missing 40-60% of its grass. This was NOT worth the $65 I payed to play it. Overall 2/10 rating.

This might be the best course in the DFW

Never played here before, we were instantly impressed by the layout and view from the club house (you can see the entire course from the club house). I also really liked that they had nice mats to chip from onto the greens to practice your chipping, usually when you try to practice your chipping at other courses you are a met with a “no chipping sign”.

The course design itself is awesome, very challenging and fair, but the real kicker is how beautiful it is. Waterfalls, huge limestone accents, old western decor and cactus, and the general condition of the course is incredible. We played during winter so everything was dormant, can’t wait to play here when everything is green. A must play golf course
