Wanstead Golf Club

About
Wanstead Golf Club stands in the grounds of what was until its destruction in 1824 one of the most famous and luxurious stately homes of the 18th century.
Established in 1893 the course has developed from the initial James Braid design to incorporate later features by renowned architects Messrs Colt, MacKenzie and Allison. Today Wanstead presents a fair golfing challenge over an interesting 6000 yard, par 69 course.

Over booked, poor member etiquette and in poor condition
Really disappointed with this round, especially after first impressions in the pro shop. Welcomed by someone in the pro shop and he was great, explained a lot but that was where the positives stopped.
They had very clearly over booked the morning, as a 2 ball, walking, it took us over 4 hours and we had to skip the 18. Generally the course is in a very poor condition, tee boxes not great, greens not great, fairways more like light rough. We were behind a very slow 2 ball for most of the back 9, who refused to let us play through, even after we asked, which is shocking for members.
I can’t imagine it’s a course I’d ever look to go back to.
Super friendly, mixed bag
Everyone was lovely, and the first itself is a grower. The first 6 uninspiring, but the round gets better as it progresses, and the finishing stretch is great.
Lots of off course investment going on, one to keep an eye on.
Great Back 9
Enjoyed playing this course but it was a dust bowl. Impossible with the weather conditions keeping fairways good but I rarely hit off grass on the fairway and there were a lot of patches of hard mud and very dry grass.
Greens in excellent condition and the colour stood out compared to the rest of the course. Tee boxes need a lot of care because they were in poor condition.
Front 9 was very samey (especially the field with 2-5 in) and it would’ve helped if there had been a few more Par 3s to break the Par 4 stretch. Back 9 was where the more interesting holes were found and this was a very fun bit of golf. The hole layouts on back 9 were miles better than front. Some longer walks between 1 and 2, 5 and 6 and 16 to 17 but I never mind that.
Nice course but very dry
A nice course but due to the missing rain it is extremely dry and Fairways are like concrete. i assume it plays very nice if Fairways are actually green instead of brown. Greens and Bunkers are in a good condition.
Refurb is a dream, but needs rain
Club refurb has brought some fantastic improvements to the course and associated facilities. The greens are fantastic and the new bunkers are brilliant. The course in some areas however is in desperate need of water/rain. If they can get some sprinklers installed in these areas or tend to them in another way, then this place will be an oasis!
Debut Round at Wanstead GC
Amazing course featured in the heart of London, with views across to Stratford on some greens but you're here to witness the course itself. With the woodland club feel and lake on the back 9 this course is in superb condition featuring some of the more interesting shaped holes I've played. With animals sprawling over the course to make it very much feel like you're out in the countryside this course is diverse with very true rolling greens and superb fairways. Great facilities to practise and very much feel out of the city with the settings of the club house, definitely returning soon!
Will definitely be back!
Really great course in central London with some challenging holes. Staff and GM very friendly and always willing to help. I have not played a better course within walking distance of a tube. I will definitely be back!
This course is going to be top tier - already good!
Great value course - new owner is clearly putting a lot of effort to get the course to a great standard and bring in new members.
Already a great course and really nice staff so well worth playing now.
odd layout great for a hot deal
Lots of extra walking and plastic webbing in bunkers takes time to adapt to. overall good round of golf.
First time playing here, staff very friendly. Course layout is different! A fair bit of walking between the 1st hole and the 2nd and again 5th to 6th if I remember correctly, but that didn’t bother us at all. Unfortunately the greens still had lots of sand on them so putting was made difficult as you was sure to get a bad bobble on almost every one. I’m sure in a few weeks the greens will be much better, the 4 of us agreed that we have played a course which is half the price of this one and the greens in much better condition. We all still enjoyed our day out here, and I will definitely return.
A friendly welcome in the rain
Having played here before I knew that the course doesn't drain very well and that, after many hours of heavy rain, it was likely to be an "interesting" round. We duly arrived to the news that there were at least seven temporary greens in use. As a result we chose to play the back nine twice, as recommended by the super friendly and helpful club professional.
The back nine holes are more interesting than the front nine in my opinion anyway. After the first tee shot over a large ditch the following eight holes are a bit of a letdown. The back nine however, is much more fun. The layout becomes more quirky and water comes into play on two holes in a picturesque way. For me the signature hole is the 16th, a 160 yard par three carry over the edge of a large lake with geese and ducks crowding the tee box. It always makes me smile to have to frantically wave the birds away in order to hit my shot! The 17th is a pretty hole which requires a soft fade and plays much shorter than it looks - a real birdie opportunity.
The conditions when we played were pretty torrential. The fairways looked to be in decent shape but the greens do flood very quickly at Wanstead. Despite that they also seemed to be in good shape and rolled true and at a decent speed on the ones in play.
The pro should receive special mention for the very friendly welcome and in-depth brief on the state of the course. We didn't use the clubhouse on this occasion but previous visits have been fine and the food and drink options are decent (pre-covid at least).
The standard green fee for Wanstead is £50 - far too much, in my opinion, for a course which has a mostly uninspired layout. We paid £18 on a hot deal and despite having to play the back nine holes twice we felt that that represented very good value, even with the course suffering from the dire weather! The course condition is normally good and I feel in summer I would happily pay up to £35. In winter, with the poorly draining soil, I think £25 would be the most I'd part with. Definitely call ahead of booking to find out course conditions though, especially if it has been raining recently!
Very Quirky!
Interesting day at Wanstead GC. Rocked up early for our tee time and was greeted by the very friendly Pro who unfortunately informed me I couldn’t use my motocaddy as there were no trollies allowed on the course. A tough break for me since I struggle with my back badly and carrying is a challenge, however he was kind enough to lend me a proper carry bag so I didn’t have to lug my large cart bag around! It Would be a great idea for golf clubs to phone visitors in advance if there are any restrictions on the course.
This however was the only real negative of the day, course was very quirky and interesting including a 200 yard wander down the road after playing the first hole to get to holes 2-5 on a separate area of land and this helped liven up the front 9 which is otherwise a tad dull. Back 9 is far more interesting and this course is well worth playing. Excellent condition throughout and good greens to boot, two temporaries when we played but didn’t take too much away from the day or the course. Friendly members, and friendly people in general.Would play again.
Great experience and golf day
Played here for the first time. Very welcoming staff from clubhouse to golf pro shop.
Very fun golf course to play.
I enjoyed every minute and will definitely be coming back.
Thanks Andreas for such an enjoyable day.
