Could be so much better
Its clear they are not putting money back into the course. It's a shame ....better than avg layout, wonderful homes surrounding, so much potential. Greens need attention, tee boxes , sand traps. Fairways were really nice for time of year.
It's as if all they do is cut grass. No trimming of hedges, cart paths almost dangerous.
Staff incredibly nice and helpful.
Owners please put some money back into the course.
St. Marlo Greens
This was my 5th time playing St. Marlo and I've noticed that the course is not in bad or terrible shape but let's just say that certain portions of the course could definitely be improved.
I'll start with the Check-in process. Checking in was simple and efficient but I've noticed that the Pro Shop is not stocked like it used to be when I've played there before. There were not a lot of options as there have been in the past with apparel nor clubs. I did notice a sign that they had Cleveland wedges On Sale. I didn't see any out in the open (or rather I didn't look for them either.) After checking in went to the range to warm up a little before my round. To my surprise the range was empty. I thought that was unusual for St. Marlo as this is a popular course to play. Was greeted by the Marshal and warmed up.
The greens and chipping area were in great shape and this is a typical indicator of what's to come when you play the course. Met with my playing group and headed off to the 1st Tee. I found it a little unusual that the grounds crew were out mowing the fairways during the middle of the day. We teed off at 12:45 PM, so I expected the grounds crew to be out of sight at this point. I must admit that the fairways looked to be in excellent shape. As we approached the first green, I noticed that there were bare spots along the edges of the greens and a plethora of weeds along the fringe. For a course of this magnitude, I didn't expect to see this. This was a recurring theme on the Front 9.
My playing partner commented several times that they didn't expect to see this and also the Greens were sandy as well. The pace of play was great as we were the only group out playing. I'd also like to mention that it did rain in the morning and we were Cart Path only? I found this very odd, as I'd expect the drainage of the Fairways to adequately handle the rainwater. We also noticed that it was very soft and wet around the Greens as well. So there wasn't a lot of run out on your approach shots onto the Greens.
We finished our Round in about 4 hours. Will I play St. Marlo again, not sure when there are so many additional options to play in the North Atlanta area. Hopefully St. Marlo can get there Greens in Championship shape throughout the course. Hope this review helps.
Slow pace and cart path was horrible
I have played this course before and loved it however this round was the worst I had experienced. Beautiful course but the pace of play was horrible (had to wait 5 to 8 minutes) each hole, the trail was golf carts beat you up as it is like an off road experience. The lady in club house was great however the starter seemed a little off that morning plus we had to start on #10 hole instead of #1 and we had an early tee time. My brother had come into town and was his first time playing at my suggestion and he left very disappointed. Hate to write this as they had always been great in the past.
Tee Times
Well they overbook every tee time. Didn’t start anybody groups off the back. Weeds growing in bunkers. I was excited to play the track. Won’t be back. Much better value in the area.
Mostly good
Good but not great course. Fairways are in excellent shape. Greens are good. Sand traps are awful. Hard as a rock with large patches of grass growing in them. Been that way for quite a while so the course must have decided to ignore that problem. Otherwise a very good course so it is a shame.
Nice course
Visually nice holes with minor issues around the cart paths here and there. Cart paths are the one area of improvement to focus on. My bag almost fell off the cart through one stretch. Otherwise, the course is in great shape and the greens played great. The layout is challenging and course management is a must. Overpowering doglegs will cost you! Worth the cost and will play again.
Greens
Greens had been freshly aerated and sanded. Putting was tough. Couldn’t get a read and ball bounce offline due to aeration holes. Other than that the course was in great condition.
Great layout
A great and fun layout that's challenging for golfers of all levels. Wide but undulating fairways, big greens, lots of sand. Fairways were in phenomenal shape. Unfortunately the greens were being aerated when we played, but that's the only criticism we had. Plan to play there again soon.
Thank you for the nice comment! We look forward to having you back out once the greens are back to normal conditions.
St Marlo Staff
Excellent course, excellent value!
I was visiting my son in Atlanta and booked a tee time for a foursome on GolfNow. We were all extremely pleased with the condition of the course, the excellent and challenging layout, and the welcoming staff. The greens were in especially fine condition, getting faster throughout the round as they dried out from the morning dew. The temp was high (over 90), but it was obvious the groundskeepers were on top of watering since the fairways were green and very playable during the current heat wave. The pace was a bit slow at times, mainly because the group just ahead of us were not keeping up with the players ahead of it. The course marshal could have pushed them a bit more, but we enjoyed our round, the beverage cart, and lunch afterwards. All in all, an excellent experience.
St. Marlo
Great course, a lot of elevation change! Greens were in awesome condition and were really quick. Would absolutely play this again. I guess only complaint would be the cart paths were not the best. But who cares, what a course!!!!
Do not play here on Tuesday mornings
The course is effectively closed until 11AM but they will still sell tee times in the morning. Range and practice areas are closed. You will have guys mowing each hole on your front 9. Staff will let you know that you are at the course too early, even though tee times are open for people to book.
We sincerely apologize for the inconvenience during that day. There was a computer glitch that caught us off guard and created multiple double bookings. If you'd like to discuss further please feel free to email me, jason.mckinney@stmarlo.com
