Fun Course - SLOW< SLOW, SLOW
I have played the course several times. This course gets a ton of play and every time I have played the course, the pace of play is AWFUL. Every time I have played the round has taken WELL over 5 hours. I have never seen a marshal who helps move play along with slower groups. On hole # 10, there were three groups on the hole (green, fairway and tee box) as well as two groups waiting at the tee behind the group on the tee box.
The course is in good condition, except it is very wet. The course does not drain well after rain and there are lots of muddy and wet, soggy places all around the greens.
The bunkers were in great condition as well as the fairways and rough (other than the wet and muddy places) were lush and nice.
Overall, this is a tough, challenging course and can yield some high scores, but it is in nice condition, especially for all the play it gets.
If you can stand a 5 hour round, I recommend the course. It is fun and challenging.
Fun, Challenging Course - Average Conditions
This was my first time playing Olde Atlanta golf course. I had a good time and liked the course. There were several fun holes and many of the holes were nothing that stands out or that I remember.
The course was in nice condition, but nothing special or amazing. Several other courses in the area which I have played over the past couple weeks are in much nicer condition. Bermuda brass greens are in very good shape. Very few non-repaired ball marks on the greens which makes them quick, smooth and challenging with lots of slopes and undulations.
Most of the bunkers had not been raked or maintained. The bunkers played like thy had not been worked or raked in several days (packed sand, foot prints and divots were very prevalent and plentiful). Pace of play was fantastic. Did not have to wait at all until holes 16, 17 and 18.
Great practice areas (driving range, chipping area, practice green, etc.).
I would recommend Olde Atlanta, but it is nothing spectacular of special.
Great traditional Georgia-style layout.
Tree-lined fairways demand more precision than blasting huge drives, though several holes do give you the opportunity to swing away. Greens are in phenomenal shape. Fairways and bunkers play like they should. Rough has been problematic in the past, but crew has responded to criticism and is keeping it short. Doesn't always drain well after heavy rain on some holes. Not the most glamorous, but a great golfer's course.
Underwhelming but could be so much better!
Olde Atlanta is part of the Clubcorp group of golf courses and gets A LOT of play. It is very crowded most days and pace of play is typically not great. The frost delay and shotgun start backed up tee times which didn’t help things either. Frost isn’t the courses fault but the foursome in front of us all tee-ed off from the tips and struggled to find the fairways on every hole. Pace of play should start with the Marshall or pro asking groups to play the tees of their ability. The tips should be restricted unless proof of single digit handicap. We watched this group in front of us search in the woods on every par 4 and 5 for balls and rarely did we see anyone hit greens in regulation.
The course is in average condition, the greens are fairly quick but very bumpy. The fairways will obviously be very nice once the Bermuda comes in for spring. Overall, this is a tough course and can yield some high scores!
Decent course but not outstanding
This is an hard course to review. I played it earlier today for the first time in a seniors match. The course was in excellent condition and I would definitely welcome an opportunity to play it again one day. So why not more than 3 stars?
The facilities at the club are certainly adequate - nice clubhouse, good service, well stocked pro shop, nice practice range and short game facilities, etc. However, if I lived close to to the club, would I join it? The answer would be no. Similarly, would I pester a member for an invite so I could rush back and play it again in a month or two's time? Again no. I'm struggling a little to say why this would be the case though.
All I can come up with is that the course is a little on the short side - I hit driver on only 3 or 4 holes today even though I'm not particularly long. On a couple of holes it was possible to hit a mid iron and wedge to the green. So length is an issue. Also, I would say that there were no particularly memorable holes either from an aesthetic or playability perspective.
My three stars shouldn't be taken as a sign that I would not recommend playing Olde Atlanta, just that I can't justify a higher rating based on my overall experience.
Difficult Layout
This is my first round in at Olde Atlanta in several years. Overall, the experience was only only ok. The staff made no attempt to manage the pace of play which at times was painful. The rough was definitely too long especially given the tight nature of course. Nothing about the course conditioning was great or poor. Based on this experience, I cannot recommend this course to others.
Tight course but pristine conditions!
Clubcorp just finished renovations of the clubhouse and its really nice! This is a great club with decent practice facilities. The driving range is not great, one cause they're almost always mats and 2, the driving range has a huge valley in front of it so you won't see any ball land short of 130 yards. Otherwise, the course is in perfect condition! Greens are slick but true. Lots of tricky approach shots, Try to get local knowledge as some tee shots are not what they appear.
