Walked

Morro Bay

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) in 4H, 15M early morning. Played with the MB Golf Group. Overcast, breezy and around 65. $27 to walk with the SLO Co. card is a good deal on a weekday morning. Kikuyu tees decent coverage, mowed down and well maintained for divots. Kikuyu fairways getting better, okat coverage mowed down low and decent to play from. Mostly Kikuyu rough maintained low with mostly good coverage. Many hard pan areas farther off the fairways. Beside and behind the greens the rough is lusher/taller. Few sand traps decently maintained with few foot prints. Mostly smallish poa greens firm and putted medium fast and were relatively smooth. They held approach shots well. These greens are difficult. There are at least 10 greens here that if you are above the hole you are in trouble on many pin locations. Balls barely missing holes with little pace can easily have 8-12' coming back. old school with no large tiers or mounds. However, there are few straight putts and putts/chips can have a great deal of break. Customer service excellent, friendly Marshall and Starter. Never any on course services here. Morro Bay looks alot more like a mountain course than a beach course. Hilly, tree lined with no water less than a mile from the ocean. The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Not a tight layout and it offers some tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock on a clear day. Being at sea level coupled with the lack of roll from the kikuyu make this course play hundreds of yards longer than you would presume based on the scorecard yardages. The par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's is fun to play. Most par 3's play downhill and most par 5's play uphill, so the scorecard yardages are very deceptive. Tough walking course with all the hills. Fun course, Recommended.

Walked the Blues (6083/69.9/119) in 4.5H mid morning with the MB Golf Group. Partly cloudy, breezy and around 65. $27 to walk with the SLO Co. card is a good rate to walk here in the morning.

Kikuyu tees well maintained with decent coverage.

Many of the Kikuyu fairways have been recently vericut. Winter thin, mowed down low but mediocre to play from.

Mostly Kikuyu rough maintained low with mostly good coverage. Beside and behind the greens the rough is lusher/taller. Many hard pan areas farther off the fairways.

Sand traps well maintained with good quality sand.

Mostly smallish poa greens were relatively smooth. Firm, but still held approach shots well and putted medium fast.

Customer service excellent, friendly Marshall and Starter. Small driving range and a busy restaurant onsite. Never any on course services here. Fun course, Recommended.

Walked the Blacks (6360/71.0/123) in 4H, 35M early morning for the SLO Card rate of $27. Played with the SLO Co. Golf Group. Jim, Klaus and Carmen, nice group to play with. Jim shot 45-45=90. Why is that noteworthy? Because he shot his age! Partly cloudy, overcast and breezy in the high 60's.

Kikuyu tees just okay. Few tees needing divot attention but the grass is thin in many areas.

Kikuyu fairways mediocre. Winter thin and firm, some recently vericut.

Mostly kikuyu rough mowed down low. Winter thin and some areas are hardpan.

The few sand traps on this layout were well maintained with fine, brown dirt/sand.

Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast speed and rolled nicely. Mostly firm but still held irons well. A few on the back looked diseased around the edges.

Almost never any on course services here. No GPS on the basic carts, small driving range that is adequate. Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Recommended, solid, fun to play old school layout.

Hilly course by the sea

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) in 4H, 15M early morning. Played with Pete, Tom and Christian, very relaxed group to play with. Overcast, breezy and around 60. $34 to walk with the SLOCo. card is a good deal on the weekend IMO.

Kikuyu tees have good coverage. More thin than lush, and the par 3's need divot repair.

Kikuyu fairways were winter thin, very playable.

Mostly kikuyu rough was thick. Very little roll and will grab your clubs trying to escape.

Few sand traps on this layout, they are well maintained.

Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast and rolled really well. Firm, few ball marks.

Morro Bay

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) mid morning in 4H, 50M. Played with Doug and Joe, both good sticks as the last group in the weekly Morro Bay GC game. The guys directly in front of us were woefully slow, well behind the 4some in front of them and they were only a 3some? Clear, breezy and around 70. $27 to walk mid morning with the SLO Co. card is a good deal IMO.

Being at sea level coupled with the lack of roll from the kikuyu make this course play hundreds of yards longer than you would presume based on the scorecard yardages. Like the par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's. The par 3's play downhill and the par 5's play uphill, so the scorecard yardages are very deceptive. Kikuyu fairways were winter thin, mowed down low and decent to play from.

Mostly Kikuyu rough was maintained low with mostly good coverage. They had recently vericutt the Kikuyu in the rough, and even though low, you were probably drawing a poor to bad lie. Many hard pan areas farther off the fairways.

The few sand traps were decenly maintained with few foot prints.

Mostly smallish poa greens were firm and downright quick today. Quickest they have been here in awhile. Medium fast overall and relatively smooth, they held approach shots well. However, if you were downhill AND downwind, better make it. Balls barely missing holes with little pace could have 8-15' on the next putt. No large tiers or mounds, but there are few straight putts and putts above the hole could be quick. Beside and behind the greens the rough is taller.

Customer service was excellent, friendly Marshall and Starter. Never any on course services here. This course would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. Old school

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/119) in 4H, 20M mid morning for the SLO Card rate of $27. Played with the SLO Co. Golf Club. Jim, Chris and Gary were very nice guys to play with. Sunny and breezy around 60.

Kikuyu tees were thin but adequate coverage. Many tees could use divot repair.

Kikuyu fairways winter thin and played firm.

Mostly kikuyu rough winter thin, mowed low. Some areas had been recently vericutt and there is plenty of hardpan if you stray far from the fairways.

The few sand traps on this layout were well maintained with fine, brown dirt/sand.

Smallish poa annua greens putted medium fast speed and rolled nicely. Mostly firm but still held irons very well. there are several greens on this course (5/11/12 come prominently to mind) that if you are on the wrong side of the hole, good luck. Balls seemingly dying at the hole coming from the wrong direction can have 6'-15' coming back real quickly.

Customer service was excellent, quick efficient check in, friendly starter. Almost never any on course services here, COVID or not. No GPS on the basic carts. Small driving range has about a dozen grass stalls and is adequate for warm-up. Solid, fun to play old school layout. Recommended

Kikuyu tees were well maintained with good coverage.

Kikuyu fairways were nice to play from.

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in slightly over 4H twilight. $15 to walk super twilight, played part of the round as a 4some, part as a 3some and part as a single. Foggy, 65 and calm. So foggy I could often not see my playing partners the last few holes, much less the green.

Kikuyu tees were the weak link. A couple were closed for reseeding, which is needed. Okay overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots.

Really fun, old school course. Constantly up/down hills. While there are some shorter holes to start, this is a deceptively long course because of the hills, usual 1-2 club ocean breeze and the kikuyu. That combination make this this one of the longest 6300 yard courses I have ever played.

Kikuyu tees were mostly lush, Good overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots.

Guys Golf Weekend - 36 holes

Had a great time playing Morro Bay GC with my neighborhood foursome on Saturday. We played 36, paying $79 for the first round & $28 for a replay after lunch. The burger & beers hit the spot, too.

Cool temps in the am, but highs of 68 in the afternoon & some scenic holes made for a perfect day. Course isn't long, even from the blues, but is challenging - especially some of the greens. I'm looking at you, #12. Shhhh, but one guy in our group took a 5 putt!

Both rounds took around 4:20, but felt a bit longer. We did wait a bit each loop, especially around 6 & 7, but plenty of beauty to take in for first-timers..

We had a blast & are already talking about doing it again, so 8 thumbs up from The Chadwick Group.

Morro Bay

Walked the Blacks (6360/70.8/119) in 4H, 45M with Dale, Lonnie and Gary mid day for $32. Partly cloudy, breezy and around 70 made for nice golfing conditions. However, we played behind the 4some no one wants to follow. Sharing rental clubs, 2 looked like beginners and 2 looked like they had never played before. They were off to such a bad start that the Marshall told them to play best ball halfway down the first fairway to try and move things along. Multiple consecutive whiffs were not uncommon, then they started hitting "do over" tee shots after a few holes? Multiple groups were quitting behind them after the first 6 holes took 2 hours. After two in our group quit after 9, they finally waived us through on 14 fairway. We were finished and leaving when they were on 17 green. It seemed like a lot longer than a 4H, 45M round. Glad I was walking and pacing things at least somewhat. It would have been really irritating riding between shots and waiting even longer. The Marshall talked to them twice, without much improvement. Collectively they had no business on a regulation golf course. Whatever happened to start on the driving range, then play par 3 courses, then executive courses and only when you can at least hit the ball, graduate to a regulation course?

The kikuyu tees were mostly lush, Good overall, but most of the par 3's were chewed up with divots.

The kikuyu fairways were lush and maintained high, not much roll on these fairways.

The smallish poa annua greens putted medium speed and were smooth. Some of the softest greens I have putted on in awhile, actually backed up several irons on these greens.

Walked the Blues (6083/69.6/116) mid morning in 4H, 15M. Paired with my neighbor Dale, Ju Ju and Larry, very fun group to play with. Foggy and overcast conditions around 70 + the lack of roll from the kikuyu make this course play hundreds of yards longer than you would presume based on the scorecard yardages. $45 to walk mid morning is steep IMO.

Like the par 71 layout featuring three par 5's and four par 3's. The par 3's play downhill and the par 5's play uphill, so the scorecard yardages are deceptive. Tough walking course with all the hills.

The Kikuyu tees were decent, mowed down and well maintained.

The Kikuyu fairways were lush, mowed down low, they were nice to play from.

The mostly Kikuyu rough was maintained low and has mostly good coverage A few hard pan areas farther off the fairways.

Only 3 sand trap on this layout. Looked decent walking by, few foot prints.

The mostly smallish poa greens putted nice. Medium fast, relatively smooth and held approach shots well. No large tiers or mounds, but there are few straight putts and putts above the hole could be quick. There are many greens where you will have putts that break 2' to 4' if you are any distance from the hole, with the break predictably being toward the ocean. The area in front of greens is mowed down like a links course, so everything from a putter to a lob wedge may be a viable option from 15 yards off the green. Beside and behind the greens the rough is taller.

Customer service was excellent, checked in and on the 1st tee shortly thereafter. This course would remind you much more of a mountain course than a beach course. You do not expect a hilly, tree lined course less than a mile from the ocean. The tree lined fairways are constantly up down hills, some severely up/down. Not a tight layout and it offers some tremendous views of Morro Bay and Morro Rock on a clear day. No drink cart today, Marshall out patrolling and friendly Starter.

Probably because the low and high temps do not wary significantly all year, the playing conditions of this course are very consistently good to excellent. Fun course, Recommended.
