Avila Beach Golf Resort
About
Avila Beach Golf Resort is located right along the bay, giving it a scenic setting that has made it the most well known of the Central Coast golf courses. The layout offers plenty of variety with a hilly front nine that features small, often elevated, greens that are surrounded by oak-lined valleys and a back nine that that is routed across a tidal estuary. Golfers should be prepared for forced carries over water and multi-tiered greens on the backside. At first the course may seem short, but thanks to the dramatic elevation changes and numerous other challenges, it will begin to feel much longer. There are several severe doglegs throughout as well as tight approaches. Avila Beach Golf Resort is not a layout where you can easily "grip it and rip it." Rather, accuracy and good course-management are rewarded.

Greens
Some of the greens were really bad had cracks in the greens.alot of leaves on the greens. The fairways were okay.
Challenging course
First time playing this course, also maybe the only time I play this course. Got a good deal on golf now vs the full price at the course, which is why we chose this course, that and the close proximity to our stay and the beach. We were only in town for the day so we just picked it at random. The course is very difficult. Narrow fairways. Blind holes. Lots of hills and elevation changes on the front 9. You could hit the left of the fairway and your ball will roll all the way to the rough in the right fairway. Long holes. Small greens. ton of ground squirrel holes. Greens were in pretty rough shape, very dry and cracked like you were playing on a lava field. Tee boxes were hard to find and wasnt completely obvious which way to go, so we spent a lot of time just trying to find the next tee box. Lost quite a few balls. Overall not as enjoyable as I would have preferred. Back 9 was more enjoyable but still difficult. Pace of play was fine, but it wasnt too busy on a Monday afternoon.
It’s worth less than 35$ a round
Grow up on the central coast, have played here for years. Will never go back. Drive to a random cow farm and offer the farmer 40$ to hit balls into his field will find nicer conditions there! Staff were nice, food was really good. It’s a concert venue first, a pickleball spot 2nd and calling it a golf course is really embarrassing
Course Conditions
I played this course before and I keep coming back because the Golf Now rate is so good but the course is not in very good shape. Fairways are so rough and the greens are starting to show disease problems, but the rate is wonderful and I’ll play it again. Also, the staff is very professional and friendly.
This course needs new ownership
It’s really a shame that a golf course in a wonderful setting like this has essentially gone to seed. There are weed patches in the middle of some greens. Some fairways are dry and hard and where they are not the gophers rule. It’s nearly impossible to keep your second shot on the fairway of the par 5 3rd hole because it’s so dry that the ball will roll down the hill into a ditch, no matter where you play it. There are cart damaging potholes on most of the cartpaths. Please, somebody buy this golf course and bring it back to its original splendor!
Fairways
As I’ve said before this course is a nice track and the greens are in fair condition, but the fairways are really really bad. They are so rough and full of squirrel holes It’s very difficult to drive your cart on the Fairways
Needs a lot of TLC
I am certain at one time this was very beautiful, challenging and enjoyable golf course that has unfortunately, for whatever reason, fallen into a state of neglect and disrepair. It needs a lot of TLC. Grass on the fairways and tees was a little patchy but not terrible. The greens however were a patchwork of different types of grass that were irregular, very slow and inconsistent. Sand traps were unkept, in need of new sand and showing signs of poor drainage. Trees and shrubbery along the fairways were in obvious need of trimming and there was a lot of debris that could easily be collected to make it more presentable. It was a nice course to experience on this one occasion but will need a lot of time and money invested to encourage me to return.
Course condition
I played this course last year and the fairways were really rough. The fairways are even worse. They’re rough and very difficult to drive a golf cart down. You need a kidney belt. The greens are fair. However, it is a good price for the $35 I paid.
Diamond in the rough
This was a fun course to play. Played from blues while on vacation with my family. Driving range was rough, tee boxes meh, and green had some real issues with patches and cracks (yes I said cracks) in them.
Despite these issues, I LOVED the layout of this course and found more than a few tee shots challenging from the blue tee. Awesome pace of play, with fun routing. Packs of deer join you on the fairway, which was pretty cool. For the price it was a great value and I will come again.
At least it was only $19
This course is terribly maintained. If I paid more than the $19 hot deal I would have been really ticked off they definitely care more about concerts than the golf course. Most likely will be a housing track on there someday. Couldn’t play last couple holes because of a concert that night.
avils beach golf
Course was in good condition. Strange seeing all the walkers using the course
Gophers are still winning 🙁
Love the challenge and layout of this course. But gopher mounds abound. Some greens chewed up. Some are fine. Most fairways are very hard dirt under thin grass. You get roll. If this course got more water and the gophers eradicated it would be a really great course. My wife likes because it is fairly short from the forward tees Deer are often seen in the mornings. A nice treat. Only worth playing if you get a deeply discounted greens fee and cart rental.
Poor Conditions, poorly managed, look elsewhere
It truly is a shame because of the location, this could be a gem of a course. Unfortunately, the owner who owns this and from what I hear also owns Black Lake does not take care of their courses. Literally, nothing has been done to improve let alone maintain this course. Greens are trashed, overgrown vegetation all around, some green cups were recut and just filled with dirt, fairways absolutely trashed with gopher holes and dirt mounds, trash overflowed in bins, I could go on and on. My buddy and I agreed we would never play this again even on a discount rate. No effort is put into this course and it shows. Look elsewhere.
Course and greens
This course needs a lot of help greens have big cracks and fairway are rocky and dying out needs watering bad. The picture is not what it looks like. Will not play it again
Avila golf course
The course is in terrible shape! They don’t put any effort into making it better. I keep trying it on and off but have decided to not play here anymore. Driving the cart down the fairway is smoother than the cart paths. The only thing that is good here is the pro shop staff, starters, and mulligans. I remember playing this course when it was considered a jewel. But not anymore.
Bad value even for a hot deal
The golf cart was covered in spiderwebs and was littered sunflower seed shells.
The driving range was mats only which is fine but the mats were torn to shreds.
Unkept greens and fairways.
The 18th tee markers were two scorecards pinned to the ground with tees. Never seen that before, so that was kinda funny.
Disappointed
We used to LOVE this course but probably won’t come back. The conditions were poor. There were deep squirrel holes everywhere (watch where you step you could break an ankle), signs on some holes non-existent, (hole 10 - no sign, no markers, just a ball wash). Just generally poor repair. 😞
Course Conditions were nearly unplayable.
The greens were less than ideal with multiple mud spots and patch work dryness. I was lucky to be able to find the tee boxes at the beginning of certain holes. All most every part of the cart path was in disarray, disrepair that it felt like an off-road adventure where you would in an ATV to cross without experiencing every bump on the stiff suspension of a golf cart. Don’t bother coming here to play just because it’s a course near the beach and labels a “resort”. Spend the money elsewhere!
