Don't Play on Holidays
Course was slammed on President's Day 2016. Took 3.5 hours to play 9 holes. Greens were torn up. Normally a fun fast course. Avoid playing on the holidays. That being said will definitely play again. Great value!
SECOND NINE DISCOUNTED
If you plan on playing 18 holes book that from the start as you get a major discount for the second nine holes. No water hazards on this course. Highly recommended for the beginner and immediate golfer.
Nice Par 3
This is a nice little par 3 snuggled in near the Santa Monica airport. The staff is great and everyone is friendly. The course is an intermediate par 3 and is in okay condition. Could use a little tending too, but mostly due to watering restrictions. I reckoned.
Fun course for a quick 9 holes
This is a fun, flat 9 hole course. There are 6 par 4's and 3 par 3's. Everyone walks here, and they generally put you in groups of 5. Despite that, the pace was decent and I finished the 9 holes in just about 2 hours. The greens are a decent size, there are sand traps, and trees are present, but only come into play if you hit a terrible shot. It's not the most challenging course, but it is fun, the price is right, and there is really nothing to complain about.
Convenient Muni
Tee time was 9am on a Saturday, got around in just under 2.5 which is about right for this course.
West-side locals know all this but if you haven't played it before, it's a good spot to get out and just tee it up. Not a lot of challenges and good for beginners. If you can get around alright, it's a good spot to work on your game while playing 9 since most local driving ranges have you hitting off mats.
Pace of play can be slow so if that drives you crazy, head elsewhere. Otherwise, crack a beer, enjoy the breeze and be happy you're on a golf course.
Slow Play
Course was in good shape and greens a little slow but smooth. The pace of play was very slow. 3.5 hours for nine holes!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
A friendly 9 hole course with quality
First of all, no, this is not your executive golf course that is filled with thick roughs and difficult greens. And no, the pace of play is not always that great (if you want to finish fast, take the super early tee times. And it's not like Rancho Park's pace of play is any better). With that aside, I still consider this the go-to course on the weekends. Why? At $19, there isn't really a better 9-hole course to play around the LA area. The tee boxes are still kept in good shape (at least a lot better than some expensive courses I have played down in Orange County area in my high school tournament ages). The greens are also in good shape (they punched the greens, so it might take a few more weeks to let it become smooth). There are holes where you can use a driver (or not, if you plan to lay up on the 425 yard par 4 hole). Layouts of some holes are challenging for the advanced players, while other holes offer easiness that are welcoming to beginners. Sure, the starter that I had may not be very friendly on the outside, but he is a very nice person with a kind heart (he let a kid know that he dropped a jacket over the microphone when he was walking away from the 18th hole). I can't comment on the food and beverage because I usually don't dine at golf courses. One thing: there are no driving ranges, so warming up at Westchester or Rancho Park is an option. There is a pretty nice putting green, however, so get those few putts in before you start your round. I have been coming here for a few times, and will be planning to come back again many times in the near future.
First Impression
Sunday afternoon, May 3, 2015 was my first time to play Penmar. I booked a Hot Deal single reservation using the GolfNow website. Although the starter did not have my confirmation in the facility computer system he was very pleasant while getting my tee time sorted. He put me in with two other gentlemen that had also used GolfNow to book their round for the same tee time.
The course was busy and running a little behind. Our round started about 10 minutes late and took 2:20 to complete. We waited five to ten minutes on the tee at each hole.
The course is a nice, easy executive nine holes. I rather liked that as opposed to the typical pitch and put par three courses in the Los Angeles area.
The course is well maintained. The greens had recently been aerated, so they were bumpy, but they will be nice in a week or two. The sand traps are well kept and not overly difficult. There are no water features to worry about.
Others on the course were friendly and courteous. Overall it was a nice day. A little slow, but the staff is great. The weather is unbeatable, and the course is not the biggest impediment to a low score. I have to own that myself.
Great Course For The Money But...
It's extremely slow. They pair every group into five-somes which turned a quick 90 minute round into a little over 150 minutes...keep in mind the course has 6 par 4s and 3 par 3s. only 1 of the par 4s is over 400 yards from the back tees..
Anyway, definitely a course to check out on a weekday and hope to get lucky that you're not stuck behind a slow group. I'll probably be back to give it another shot since I liked the layout and it was in good shape.
Penmar by the SEA
This is an excellent Executive Golf Course. Only thing missing is a par 5 for the men. They can rectify that by turning the 6th hole into a par 5 for the men by moving their tees back 20 yards. it already is a par 5 for the ladies. The first cut of rough is fluffy so your ball sits up-thus you can recover from an errant tee shot. The greens are well kept but they do get bumpy with all the traffic. Overall, a good value for the money and your time.
Another fun outing at Penmar
Got to the course early and was able to go out right away. A group of four in front played quickly so my round was able to be enjoyed at a leisurely pace.
Great Quick Course
This course is what you'd expect for a 13 dollar round. However, it is well maintained, as much as can be expected when in a drought. I had no complaints. It's a very easy course, as I didn't lose a ball, and usually I would have lost at least 4 in the front 9. I would definitely go back. Pace of play was about 2 hours, so not bad. We walked (You have to) which I didn't like, but what can you do? I'd definitely go back for a quick round when I'm bored. I prefer looking for hot deals to much nicer courses which average to the same price as Penmar when you take into account 18 holes.
Locals enjoy it as well as visitors from abroad
I felt it necessary to post my more positive review as this is my local course now and I always enjoy my round here, either as a walk on single paired up with some very cool players, recently from France, or as a foursome of friends with a tee time.
The course has been beautiful this year, the fairways lush, greens tight and well maintained and the ocean breezes keeping it cool even during mid day play. It is a City Course and struggles no doubt with money issues like all of the other courses. Thankfully grass tee boxes
I am totally stoked with the brand new rentable three wheeled walking carts. They did jack up the rental to $3 but worth it as it is a new cart with everything working nicely and room for your cold beverage and stuff basket space to tote along on your game.
Its a long 9 hole with a few long fairways but it is easy to hit onto adjoining fairways. Heed the cry of "fore" - one never knows if you are about to be hit by a ball... I haven't but I have heard tell of such.
Anyway, its prettier, quieter and safer than Westchester and certainly without the crowds of Rancho Park, the two neighboring courses and it is possible to get in and out in just over two hours if you play quickly.
Between cotton patch and scrub grass
beware of the aggressive SQUIRRELS - no fear! Short, flat, uninteresting course with difficult greens and marginal fairways.
