Sugar Hill Golf Club

About
Nestled in the foothills of the north Georgia mountains, Sugar Hill Golf Club tumbles across elevation changes that range from subtle to dramatic. The course is artfully laid across the rolling hills, weaving through stands of mature trees, to provide it with the maximum level of challenge and the best views. The natural contours played a role in determining the placement of the bunkers around the greens and fairways as well as shaping the sharp doglegs. As if the golf course didn't already have enough challenges, there are also deep grass canyons and water hazards to contend with. The par-4 fifth and the par-3 12th are memorable water holes, both featuring large lakes that lurk in front of the greens. Sugar Hill G.C. is known as one of the toughest golf courses in the area.

Bunkers no Sand
Course was challenging! Over conditions were good. Cup hole in the greens was poorly cut on most greens. Almost no sand in the bunkers, rocks present! Hard on club and no way to play a true bunker shot!
Greens were pretty bad
Love this little gem of a Golf course. An absolutely terrific layout that may fool you with its short yardage. It’s not gimmicky, but intelligent and dangerous with scoring opportunities everywhere . Tee shots are critical and some of the most challenging you will ever play. I’ve played this course many times and it’s one of my favorites all time. We can no longer take the carts into the parking lot which sucks, but I get it and won’t bash that part anymore….lol. The greens here have some fantastic slopes that can reward you or destroy you. Unfortunately, the surfaces of the greens were generally terrible. After many rounds at this golf course, I was expecting good putting surfaces but no, they were terrible……..weeds, not aeration . I don’t live close anymore so I only get to play it maybe once a year…….cant wait to get back, fingers crossed for better greens. For first timers, you may need to play it twice as most of the greens are not visible from the tee, even on the short par 4s……a good app with the course on it will be beneficial. The carts do have the screens with the gps and layouts, but make sure you get one that works……one of our carts had one busted up and not working so the guy switched carts at the turn.
Sugar Hill
Sugar Hill golf course is a very nice track, not a lot of water and large greens.
Great Scenic Course
I don’t think you’ll find a better course for under $50. Rolling hills and a few ponds make the course beautiful and challenging. We played from the whites and I am not a big hitter, but will definitely play from the blues next time. Fairways are in great shape. Greens are lush (maybe a little long and slow, but I am sure surviving the Georgia heat is priority. All in all, a great day on a great course!
This course gets you to think
Overall, I enjoyed playing SHGC. There are a lot of shot placements to a landing zone for the next shot so iron play has to be good. The only problem playing an "Atlanta" golf course is that for some reason the pro shop wants you to go out in foursomes. I don't have 3-4 hours for 9 holes or 6-7 hours for 18 waiting on the others to play. I got other things that need to be done in the day. This was the 2nd course in 3 weeks where we were paired up with other guests.
Nice public course!
If you live in the Atlanta area, you already know that most of the courses are private. It is difficult to find a course where you aren't paying an absorbent amount to even join much less play. SHGC was a great public course to play. A lot of spots you had to land to setup for the next shot. Greens were baked and fast which I like. I would recommend playing this for any type of golfer. Beautiful scenic holes and lots of hills.
Course improvement
In the last couple of years the course has steadily improved.. The course now is a top condition public course.. Fairways, tee boxes and greens are in very good condition
