Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane
About
Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane is situated in the quiet town of Woodbridge, just 20 minutes from New Haven. Formerly known as Oak Lane County Club, the course was both renamed and renovated when it was acquired by the management team at The Tradition Golf Club at Wallingford. Many of the holes were updated but the golf course retained its challenging but playable nature. Though the course is player friendly enough to appeal to players of all skill levels, there are still several challenges in store. Numerous strategically placed bunkers lurk along the greens and towering trees also frame most of the holes. The holes are mostly straightforward with a few tricky doglegs to keep you on your toes. You'll also be confronted with the occasional water hole. Both your accuracy and short-game skills will be tested at Tradition Golf Club at Oak Lane.

Wanna be scratch golfer
Course was in outstanding condition.
Greens rolled fast and true, though some pin placements were unfair.
Great day
Staff very helpful and polite. Will definitely go back there . It would be helpful if they marked the holes with a sign so you could find them and maybe direct you to the next one.
A little difficult
Played with friend who isint that great was a challenge for him.
5th round
greens were quick, traps not groomed at all. Pace was good, cart girls clueless on where and when to stop and go.
Nicely maintained daily fee course
This course is a pretty good value. Some very tough, fast greens. Par 5s are extremely challenging here, but the rest of the course is a fun, fair layout.
A nice place to play
Got a great golfnow deal only $29 for 18w/cart. Tee time was around 7am so avoiding the mid-day heat was great! The course was very nice the only complaints I have was being paired up into a 4-some even though we were the ONLY players going out at the time and there was not a single group ahead or behind us by at least 3-4 holes. Also being so early, the gnats were out in full force and were completely frustrating to play with a constant swarm of 20 bugs flying in your face.
The bugs went away after a bit and the rest of the round was quite enjoyable. Lots of holes forced you to hit irons off the tee and carry the hazards on your second shot but overall it's a pretty nice place if you get the right price!
Oak Lane this week
Tough opening par five. Several challenging holes but lots of holes you can drive.
Nice Course
Can tell that this course has been around for a while as it has uphill par 3's, which are not being built on modern courses, apparently. Nice use of the elevation changes. Course was in good shape. Some tee boxes need work but the greens were great and rolled true, although they should give out a free green repair tool so players take the hint. Only downside were the bunkers which were either full of footprints or pretty packed and the quality of the sand would both keep the footprints intact and also bounce a wedge if you're on a flat spot. Eventually just played the sand shots as chips after I got tired of watching the shot go 10 yards past the target. Still, a fun course, nice design, plenty of length but still numerous holes you have to learn the proper landing spots when you couldn't pull out the driver. Having a few rounds under your belt at this course can save you some serious strokes.
Wasted Day
I don't have the opportunity to get out often so when i do i really look forward to an enjoying day and fun round. I know Oak Lane from when it was private to be a challenging and fun course to play. It remains the same in very good condition. Now that its public I understand that you have to take all players however when inexperienced golfers Should NOT play from the tips when they cant clear the tee box.
There were 2 issues that arose . The starter never started anyone at their designated time . everyone seemed to be going off early So the first par 3 all golfers were all jammed up with a backup of 3 foursomes . Secondly the ranger who can set the pace of play never did so. He was a glorified spectator ... Out of frustration i hit close to the foursome in front of us to speed up their play. When I spoke to the ranger about getting them to speed up play.... I said I will next time hit into them ... his comment was go ahead and do it... Seriously!!!! isn't that his job to keep the pace pf play ???? I am done with Oak Lane
Old Man Par is a tough standard at this track
Venerable Oak Lane is a solid track just outside of New Haven. The course is, as they say, all out there in front of you, similar to a Robert Trent Jones design. There are subtle doglegs and manageable bunkering. You won't have to worry about negotiating steep lips in these hazards. But taking on Old Man Par is still a challenge here. There are multiple water hazards. The greens are slick and undulated, with pin positions tucked often away on ledges. Having said that, this certainly is not the case of tricks left and tricks right. It's a fair test and conditions are good enough, although not great. The par-5 ninth is a highlight - tee shot sweeping downhill left to a water hazard, a second over that hazard and uphill. Two good shots will leave you less than 100 yards to an elevated green that will test your putter. I'd definitely recommend the course. For $65 at peak times, it's an outstanding value in a region defined by solid value golf.
Pace of play made the round uncomfortable
I had played this course twice before and had very easy flowing rounds. It is a nice course in good condition. Like many courses, when you get behind the wrong foursome it ruins the pace of play. We suggested that the group could pick it up when we were close enough to say something after 8 holes. They were a little better afterward but only after we had waited 10 times over a 6 hole span including 5 minutes after playing a par 3. They saw us waiting every hole but it took a comment to get them to realize they were a full hole behind after only 3 holes. The course was only moderately busy and we would have sailed along if the group in front had let us through. Courses need to at least look for these slow groups and bump them along or force them to let others play through. We waited periodically after we made comments but it was not as severe as the first 8 holes. Without this group ruining our flow, we would have enjoyed the course much more.
Keeps getting better and better
Played here a few times this year and just want to say it keeps getting better and better. Price is a deal for this good a course, place is in GREAT shape and the crew is very accommodating but knows how to keep play moving. No reason to play anywhere else in this area.
Starters are Terrible! Staff need Customer Service Training!
Rude Starters and staff. They had no control over the order,, which resulted in horrendous pace of play...
Awesome day
Place was really busy. Now I know why. Some of the best conditions I've played this year and people there made you feel like they really appreciate the business. Well done Oak Lane.
Great course
Played a round here at 7 a.m and we could not have asked for a better day. Course was in great condition. Would recommend this to anyone looking for a great local course in the greater New Haven area.
course
For a public course, pace of play was fine and condition was great. Greens a little slow but in great shape.
Like the layout
Greens were pretty fast, course was in good condition. I like the layout of the course. From the tee box a lot of the holes present with a challenging view. The last 3-4 holes are back and forth and pretty straight. I'll go back especially with the deals you can get.
Grteat Course - enjoyed it
This was the first time I played this course and I will definitely be back. The course was in great shape and the facilities were excellent. The weather was perfect and our group was able the play at a good pace.
In good shape!
Oak Lane is looking really good. The greens are not that fast yet, but very soon. No complaints at all with this course.
Very Happy
I was very skeptical before I booked this reservation. I read the previous reviews and people were pretty harsh. I am very happy that I did make this reservation. The course was in excellent conditions, green were very nice and the staff was very polite and friendly. If I had to make a criticism I would have to say the course was difficult from the blue tees, I know this is my own fault, Ill play the whites next time. I will no longer be putting much confidence in other player's reviews without playing the course myself. I know from my own business that people are always looking for freebies and discounts< I would guess this has something to do with some of the reviews here.
