Garrisons Lake Golf Club
About
Garrisons Lake Golf Club, nine miles north of Dover, is a historic play centrally located to all parts of Delaware. The course is nature friendly: with tree-lined fairways and large, well bunkered greens throughout. The par-72, 7,060-yard course was recently renovated and improved, and players of all abilities will be confronted with a fair challenge. Not that there aren’t hurdles. Garrisons Lake is book-ended by two long plays: The 535-yard, par-5 first features out of bounds along the left side, and the 536-yard 17th features a challenging tee shot with trees on the right side. Garrisons Lake Golf Club also has a bustling practice range, putting green, golf shop and snack bar.

Love this course
Challenging, handsome, and quiet course. Great course for the money. Welcome to Smyrna and Enjoy.
Nice local course not far from US 1
Booked this course to play on the way home from Rehoboth Beach, DE. Very friendly pro shop staff got me out early on a not so busy day. This course has some serious sand bunkers that protect the greens and I hit many sand shots on this day. Some long par 3 as well that make you hit your longest iron. I enjoyed the course layout with many trees just off the fairway to try and avoid. This course can play very long or short, based on the 6 or so sets of tee boxes on every hole. I seems like a fair course to bring your junior player or beginner as well.
So-So Course
Course is in moderate shape. Needs some up keep. Grass was long, fairways full of leaves and cart paths terrible condition. Pace of play was also terribly slow. A two-person group took 4.5 hours to finish as we were waiting consistently. Hope renovations put this place back to where it once was!
Improvements
Course focused on recovering the greens from last season and accomplished that. Besides aeration, greens were in pretty good shape. Only bad thing is they focused only on the greens and seemed to forget about the rest of the course. Tee boxes, fairways and around the greens were clumpy and rough. Might take another year before those to improve but the staff is trying their best. Brand new range balls and and new range mats were great so if nothing else, head there for some practice.
I would play there again.
This is the 2nd time I have booked 18 holes and when I got there only the back 9 was open. I figured I'd play the back nine twice, but there was too much of a backup to replay the back nine. I guess I'll call the next time to see if all 18 are open. I wish it was on Golf Now's description, I would have booked somewhere else.
Up and Coming
The professional that is managing this course is doing a great job and ensuring this course is ready for the 2021 season. It is a fun and challenging track at a reasonable cost. I have never had a bad experience at Garrisons Lake Golf Club.
Garrison Lake
The front 9 was closed. Had to play the back 9, twice. The greens were in terrible shape. Putting was an adventure. The grass in the fairways was hard to distinguish from the grass in the rough, other than height.. Thr Pro Shop was a trailer and had some items for sale. I am told that they are planning on doing some major upgrades in the future. Perhaps that is why the front 9 was off limits? Not sure if it was that or just too wet and soggy to play. To be fair, it was the middle of December when I played and so perhaps the course would be better in the Spring.
Back 9 twice
Front 9 were closed and going under repair so had to play the back 9 twice. The rough was a little thick in some areas and could use a mowing but we just had a ton of rain recently so understandable. Greens weren’t anything special, very playable but needs some work. I got a golfnow.com deal for $16 so it was a wonderful value at that price. Will be back to play again.
Good for beginners
The course maintenance was awful crabgrass everywhere, dead grass, tee boxes were torn up, new and old sod on the greens. Fairways were pretty good loved the layout. It’s a great course for beginners
Needs a lot of work
Greens without much living grass. With the exception of a couple of nice fairways, most were in poor condition with bare spots and crab grass. The rough needs lots of weed control as well.
They have placed some new sod on sections of some greens, one was ringed with a bare strip ready for new sod
Rough is rough!
Dont hit your ball out of the fairway. The grass there is not maintenance well at all. You can lose your ball only two feet off the cart path. Other than that its fine to me. Greens were in need of some love but they were just aerificated.
