Okay ish.
First off, the staff is pretty great. They were welcoming and friendly and actually allowed us to tee off a few minutes before our tee time because the course was open. The layout is a little quirky, you could pretty much keep your driver in the bag all day even on the par 5's. I don't love 2 severe doglegs in a row, but here you find it frequently.
Conditions were fair for early spring. Some bare patches here and there on the fairway edges could use improvement. The greens were rolling fast and smooth (although they don't always look like they should). The bunkers had fresh sand for the most part. The fairways were in decent shape for just coming out of winter. Tee boxes could use some love. They aren't in the best shape. Often times if you want to hit off grass you have to hit from a less than ideal angle.
So overall this could be a really nice course, and for the amount of play for the area (surrounded by upper class wealthy areas and is the only public option) this course should be in a little better shape. They aren't hurting for players so the money coming in should be put into the fairways and tee boxes. If they did that it would be a great short track to dial in your irons and fairway woods.
Put some money into this place!
I have played here numerous times over the years. It is always the same. Never great, never unplayable. Yesterday was my last time, however. We have so many choices in the North Atlanta area and for the premium golf dollar that River Pines charges, I intend to reward those courses who maintain their course. Greens awful, no grass on tee boxes and always a weather excuse from the staff. I walked off after 6 holes and felt like they just picked my pocket. The owner here pockets every dollar and puts little back into the course.
Could be very nice course but....
Not now. Not their fault either. This is the soggiest course I have played in years. 12 straight days of rain will do that. Naturally it was cart path only also. This would explain why so many players were using push carts. This is a hilly course with cart paths often uphill. So we likely walked 5+miles in 18 holes back and forth to the carts.
But the main problem was that they had punched the greens last week and no where did we know that prior to booking this round, until we showed up for play.
We held up walkers constantly because we spent so much time going to and from our carts. ( I HATE being the slowpoke). (uphill both ways I am sure).
course was worse than soggy.
greens were punched.
And we still payed over $50 for our round.
So Value? No way.
A little wet, but good day on the links...
While the course was wet understandably from all the recent rain, the round was very enjoyable and the greens in good shape.
Enjoyable Round
Was a nice day for late December. Always enjoy this course and the layout. Greens very fast but held the approach shot. As everyone knows, this course is close to the River and creeks and holds a lot of water. Cart path only for about 5 holes which I thought was pretty good considering all the rain we've had the past two months. For this time of year, course was in good shape. Worth it if you can get a hot deal.
Great value, fun course.
Good course. They upgraded carts with electronics score/hole info, ph chargers, etc. Hadn't played here in few years. They've removed some hazards for speed of play. Still tough course with lot of water hazards. Range is good, balls included. Price is right.
Great track!
I always like Denis Griffiths designs and, love the challenges he provides. We were greeted at the car by a guy named Chris that humped two bags from the far end of the parking lot to the cart and had the clubs, and range balls ready for us to go. We don’t use the bag drops and were surprised that he did that. The pro shop is somewhat modest. The grill has good food and awesome service thanks to Matt. It was our first time there so we were given a card (with a survey) for a free drink for each of us so, that was a nice touch. The course is very solid and the bentgrass greens were in nice shape. I do wish people would fix their ball marks but, I digress... The cart lady was around numerous times so, there’s no need that won’t be met. It was very busy but, the rangers kept everything flowing and the pace good. I look forward to getting back out there.
A challenge
First time playing this course. Tees, fairways, and greens were all in good condition. There is enough water and bunkers to challenge any golfer. Challenging, but manageable. Especially if you play with a member.
Super Fun Round
All staff very friendly and the golf was excellent.
Good default option
Close to home so very convenient. Accessible with early morning tee times. Overall good shape tee to green. Greens always tend to run slowly and they are fairly flat There are a few holes that present decent elevational challenges, but not a difficult course. In summary, its a decent course, not as challenging as others in the area and a little pricey based on value. Hot deals are a good option.
Solid Track
A solid golf course all around.
The pros: friendly staff! The fairways, rough, bunkers and tee boxes are all in good shape.
The cons: The greens were both patchy and bumpy. Looks like they are still recovering from aeration. A few bare spots on some greens. The course layout is eh, nothing too special. A few interesting par 4s that made you think. Overall, I’d recommend.
Reliable "Go-To" Course
Course was in nice shape despite all the rain lately. Greens had a fair amount of imperfections, but overall played consistent. Great value for the price.
The staff was very friendly and helpful, which can't be said for most courses these days.
I’m a big fan
Great course. Had a lot rain the night before, so Cart path only. Wet but in real good shape. Was going to arrive late so when called to let them they were very accommodating and still got me in. Nice layout with some good risk reward shots. One of the starters was going around with a water cooler. Nice touch. Really enjoyed it. Will be back.
