Ninth tee Photo submitted by GolfDawg54 on 06/17/2019
A good day.
It was a great time of the year to play. It is almost always windy at this course and it did not get breezy until the late afternoon. Fairly good pace until the back nine. Had a slow threesome in front of me with a loudmouth who was on his phone most of the nine.
Nice design with good use of terrain
Modern design surrounded by homesites. Elevation changes with smaller target greens.
This course is always fun to play
I believe Red Tail is one of the better values and courses I've discovered in the north west suburbs.
Great Course!!
I've always enjoyed playing Red Tail GC! It is a very moderately challenging course that is well maintained. The course definitely demands great control or the hazards will most certainly come into play. It has lots of bunkers surrounding the greens and generous amounts of water that demand your attention. It has a GPS system in the cart as well which helps with distance control. Also, the very friendly staff makes for a great golfing experience.
Excellent value for the money
Beautiful course with changing elevations. Well maintained. Great value for the money. Will definitely be back!
Course in decent shape except for sand traps
Redtail is a fun play at least one a year. It's a pretty course with nice vistas of the surrounding area. The second is a difficult driving hole and a very challenging par 5 with lots of trouble. 10th and 16th have island greens, 7th is short par 4 with wetlands protecting it on all sides from 150 years in so this course keeps your interest. Some elevation changes but not overall hilly. The housing around part of the course is set back/not intrusive. The sand traps have been cruddy for several years. The greens are in fairly decent condition (better than last year) but are a tad shaggy slow with some bumpiness....greens are just "okay" so this puts my personal rating a 3.5 stars....course worth $30 and many times you find a golfnow rate under that which makes it a very good value.
Good course.
Good challenge for a variety of skill levels. Reasonable at GolfNow special rates.
Great Value
With the discount from GolfNow, you can't beat this. Course is ion good shape and is a good challenge.
Redtail is a nice course for the money.
This course is a good value. It does not punish poor tee shots, but does have some challenging holes. Fairways and tee boxes were nicely maintained. Greens were good, but could have been cut. The biggest issue with the course is the sandtraps. They have gravel type sand and are not well maintained.
Hot Deal Can't Be Beat
Greens were fuzzy but rolled true. If you have to pick between Chalet Hills, Foxford Hills or Red Tail go with Red Tail. The GolfNow hot deal of $22 can't be beat. The only other course in the area that can compete with Red Tail is Golf Club of Illinois.
Worst greens in Illinois
Play here only if you like putting on shag carpeting. The greens are the worst I've played all year, and when I mentioned it to the staff, the guy shrugged and didn't say a word.
Good, scenic course but sand in traps needs to be replaced.
Generally, I liked playing the course as it has a nice combination of hills, doglegs, water, etc. to make it an interesting, pleasant, and reasonably challenging layout. Previous reviewers noted the sand traps were not up to par, and I agree. They look OK, but the current "sand" is mixed with small pebbles that make the sand traps literally feel like a rock. The course was well-maintained except for this. Replacing the sand would lead to a more positive experience and bring more golfers. Lastly, the clubhouse looks like a decent but temporary trailer, however, once inside, it's very nice and indeed permanent. Food and drink offerings are good and reasonably priced. In summary, I would play it again and would rate it very high if the sand was replaced.
Overall a nice place to play.
I like the layout and generally the fairways and greens are in good shape. My only complaint is that many of the green-side bunkers are hard as concrete and have been that way for years. Obviously the idea is to avoid the bunkers but even the best players wind up in there once in a while. You should find at least enough loose sand under your ball so a standard bunker shot can be played.
Quiet peaceful and serene
Great course to "get away". Super fairways and greens. Fresh air and plenty of wildlife to take in. Almost makes you forget that last bogie. If you can shut up, it is really really quiet out there....with big Red tail hawks hanging out on hole 2.
Superb value
This course is always a treat to play. Well-maintained, it is a bit wild and beautiful, just enough trouble to keep you honest but you can score well here with some intelligent play. Good true greens, good variety of holes, not 'up and back cookie-cutter par 4s'. 10 and 16 are challenging approaches to an island green. Really solid bang for your buck. Hint: if you cannot carry 215 consistently consider laying up off the tee on #2, trust me.
I never heard of this course before Golfnow. I will go back often now.
What a beautiful course. There are houses around, but there is no way they come into play. The feel of the course, the way it is maintained, and the challenges made this a must go back to course.
Two island greens on par 4 holes make it interesting
course is in good shape. they need more sand in the traps
Good bang for your buck
The course is well maintained with bent grass through out the course. The course is average in length and has a few very challenging holes. The carts do have GPS. The only issue with this course is its sand traps have minimal sand they are more like transition areas filled with rocks not green side bunkers.
Great value for a very good course
Greens in great condition. pace of play a little slow.
Nice greens, worst sand in Chicagoland
Nice inexpensive muni, really nice greens. a couple years ago the course put in sand that is full of rocks in the traps. Some of these rocks are almost as large as a golf ball. They have not fixed this condition and they seem to just ignore the traps. They are the worst sand traps that I have ever seen. More like a waste area than a sand trap.
