Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Looks can be deceiving
Always pass by this course during my deliveries during the week. Course looks great from afar, but sadly, this course is far from good. Booked tee time online. Got an email this morning stating the course would be walk only due to the weather. Ok. Pulled in to parking lot. Met by the grounds keepers, a herd of goats. No, seriously, a herd of goats. Course only had one pull cart, so we decided to huff it carrying our bags. Course plays fair. Nothing out of the ordinary. Greens were very good, but some of the hole locations were questionable. This course will definitely be a one and done for me. Just not what I expected.
Local Muni course; Drastically improved from a few years ago.
This is my local municipal course, and I learned how to hit on this range (mats). It's location right near my house and work make it ideal to stop and play. I will say the golf carts have screens with GPS, and when I first played this course here a few years ago, it was in disarray, such that a friend I was playing with said he would never come back. This was just as I was starting to learn the game of golf.
After taking my some time away from the course, I returned with my cousin to play a round as they were able to accommodate us immediately after a local course was "closed for the next week" despite us being able to book a tee time on this site. I found the greens to be much better kept, the fairways green and healthy, and the tee boxes had never been an issue.
My only suggestion is that they spruce up the pro shop. They have friendly staff, but need more gear, and to capitalize on the "Bacon" and get creative and some high quality golf gear in there.
Overall extremely impressed and glad I brought family to this course as it was MUCH much better than a couple years ago. I would return and will return, even if it's a solo round.
Slow play
Greens are getting better, a few still have sand spots and crab grass. Layout is fun but the pace of play sucks. Got behind a 4 some of older gentleman and it took a little over 5 hours to play 18. I understand they are older and slower but they need to let people play through.
Horrible Greens
Crab grass is so bad on the greens its impossible to make a putt from more than a foot out.
Cheap, Easy Golf
You get what you pay for, and this course is probably one of the poorer conditioned courses in the area. Not a very challenging course, little water but a decent amount of bunkers. Fairways are kept in decent enough shape, greens are very hit or miss however. Some greens were in near pristine condition, and some were covered in crabgrass and sand spots. Great for a casual round of golf or a hangover scramble, but not a place to really test your skills.
Great price
Some greens in great shape- some had a few weeds. Great price with cart. Paired up with good people. Can’t fault them for all the rain making some fairways sloppy. Hopefully we can get some dry days to dry out course.
Bad communication
Wasn’t not told when I. Liked online it was going to be walking only. That’s right walking only, not cart path only but walking only. Had to pay for 2 because they wouldn’t let me book for a single when it was wide open. The I get there at 7:00 my tee time is at 7:10 and the doors are locked. They are locked past my tee time. My advice is if you are going to do walking only let it be known online and have the cart rate reduced to walking rate.
Bacon heat
Played Bacon first time in years. Front nine greens very poor, but for some reason 13-18 greens all good? Tees and fairways are fine. Only 18 holes remain from old 27. If u want to play just nine and walk u will have to walk 1/2 mile from 9 green back to clubhouse.
No management of play so singles, walkers mixed behind foursomes. Waited behind older guys foursome every shot for 10 holes.
Such a shame to have a classic design continuing to be in the shape its in.
maiden voyage
I have lived in Savannah for 3 years. I had always heard that this course was very challenging and not always in good condition. This Donald Ross course is exceptional. The rough is very difficult, as it has not been mowed, which appears to be at least 3-4 weeks. I am sure the budget for labor is very tight. There were 6-8 greens that unfortunately had a lot of goose grass. If you can get past the goose grass and the occasional rough patches on the greens, then you will undoubtedly enjoy this track. The fairways and tee boxes were better than most higher-end courses I have played. Bacon Park is outstanding!!! If you are not a "Golf snob" and want to play an epic layout, then definitely get out to play.
Awful rules and staffing
Staff was very unhelpful and unfriendly wouldn’t let us rent golf cart after prepaying for it.
Very nice course
For the value the course was very good. My first time playing this course was a wonderful experience. Pace of play was perfect. No delay or pushy groups were there on a early Saturday morning. A few greens had some dead areas but it's something I've seen on other courses in the area where I've paid more and not as relaxed. Staff was very friendly. I would love to return one day.
Old course
Old course not well maintained in my opinion. Staff are nice but price is too high for what you get. Seems people who play here don’t care for other players. Almost was hit from another player behind me. Flow is kind of slow.
