Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
frankb
the course was great the staff was great would play this course again
A hidden classic
This course is a Donald Ross design from 1926. You can tell - it has the shapes of many Ross courses. The greens are actually pretty quick and true. (Ignore the practice green). If it had the maintenance budget of a private Ross, the fringes and first/second cuts would be tight and fast and the course would get its due. Alas, it does not, but the operator does appear to appreciate the course and is trying.
Fun to play, I'd play again.
Time has passed this course by
The first 3 greens had giant depressions filled with sand. The electric carts had instructions to where they want you to go but with 0 paths it shuts down frequently to areas you'd not expect. Doest feel like much has gone into improvement or maintenance since ross opened it in 1926
Course ok for my level of play
We had the course to ourselves, a little baron on some fairways, greens were fast but some had damage. Overall an enjoyable experience..
Donald Ross
It's clear that the new group managing the property cares about golf and design. Greens rolled very true and had t0 be handled strategically. Holes were interesting each one different. Great value at a muni that is well cared for.
Value for Money
At $40 a head this is good value for money but some greens need some work and while generally course condition was good there is plenty of room for improvement. Lay out is varied if flat. Still considering my home courses charges over €350 a round this course is worth a shot.
Staff was excellent. Pace was extremely slow. Course needs much TLC. Greens were D. Ross challenging.
I like the course especially in mid Spring
Grass was dry and flat on fairways. It is winter so…
Donald Ross
Pleasantly surprised played like a classic Ross course. Crowned greens undulating and in decent shape for this time of year. Fun track!
A great day of golf
I had a really good day at Bacon park and plain on going back. this course is a little short but sometimes that's a good thing. I was able to get a round in and watch some football that day. the staff was very friendly. you better pay attention to the golf cart GPS for the cart path was tough to follow and not there at times but it was my first time at this course. the price that I got off golfnow was really good as well.
Course is getting better, still a good bit of work to go but looking better. Glad to see the cart paths and bridge ramps repaired.
Get it together OC
First time playing since OC Welch took over with a major renovation nearly 8 years ago. Greens conditions left a lot to be desired. They put 3 guys walking and one in a cart ahead of the two of us who were either didn’t care or we’re unfamiliar with letting people play through. No ranger in site the whole round. GPS area restriction on cart constantly shut down the cart in the middle of fairways and other inappropriate places. Actually had to back between some holes to get anywhere. After all this time I expected better.
A Tired Donald Ross Gem
Firstly, on line booking fouled up family reservation and the staff was incredibly friendly in getting us out.
Secondly, she is a tired course that has fallen to disrepair and hard times. But you can see Ross’ fading fingerprints on the layout and particularly on the modest green complexes that flex their muscle with defined quadrants requiring precise approaches.
I can tolerate the rutted dirt paths, damaged greens, water damaged fairways but for life of me I don’t understand the security procedures on the carts that constantly shut you down even in the fairway.
Course served a family of 8 well as we have two under five handicaps and 2 beginners. Just important to know what you are getting into. I would do again with this group but unfortunately, could not give a blank recommendation to a group of golfers visiting the area.
