Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
price for round a little high for conditions
This course has a great layout, it’s a Donald Ross design which speaks for itself however its shape and condition has always been up and down. Greens have always been pretty decent, fairways and rough aren’t the best in the slightest course can get very dry lacking good growing grass a lot of times your lie will be dirt. However it’s a good course but last time I played it was a bit expensive for what it also price of range balls is ridiculous $7 dollars gets you about 20 balls.
Back to your roots
I've played Bacon Park on and off over the years, mostly because i Live in SC. It's a great layout and more importantly it's been transformed back into the course it was supposed to be. Definitely worth a play and as you do you'll feel why so many call that course home.
AWESOME!!!
For $17 (Senior/Walking) I just finished playing a Donald Ross GEM!!! What a wonderful walk & test!!!
Played the back tees as a 2some.at 10:30 on a Thursday in less.than 3:45.
On the Par 3's, I hit 7-iron, 4/5 Hybrid, 9 iron & DRIVER!!!
On the Par 4's, hit 4/5 hybrid FIVE times.
Reached a Par 5 in 2; was greenside on the others in 2.
Summary: VARIETY!! STRATEGIC golf is back!
Greens are architectural MASTERPIECES dating to a time (1926) before lawnmower technology brought us Stimpmeter readings of 10-12...these were probably "7 or 8" (and two were lacking much grass) but it was so much fun. getting to them!!
CANNOT WAIT TO.RETURN!!
Greens in really bad shape. Fairways today weren’t good as well. Has a lot of weeds and bald spots all over. First par 3 has a dirt green. I believe it’s number 4
Not bad for a city course
First time here. From the start, the staff is very friendly. Unfortunately, there was a men's league in front of us so have of play was slow. However, the starter apologized numerous times and was very friendly every time we saw him. The course is a little beat up and some of the greens are scalped pretty good. For a city course it isn't that bad. Not very challenging either.
Golf now
Nice course for a $17 coupon. Each hole was relatively the same. Most of the greens were not pretty but oh well. Good little bargain for golf now. The staff was awesome though. We did get rushed quite a bit by fellow golfer but there’s not much you can do about tht. Everyone used to golf around the same time
needs some TLC
Have played this course several times over the past 3 years. Played it three times this year. Today's round was atrocious. Fairway grass is almost nonexistent, over half of the greens had bald spots, no grass and/or sandy patches, many other greens appeared to have fungus or other type weeds interspersed with the regular grass. Ground was exceedingly dry. I realize we haven't had a lot of rain for the past several weeks but there is no reason they shouldn't be watering the fairways and greens. The operator took this over a few years back and spent a lot of money bringing the course back, but now it appears that maintenance is being put on the back burner.
I won't bother to come back again until they fix the greens and get the fairway grass to grow some. There are too many bare spots on the fairways to get a good ball strike. Not worth the money even if it was $5 a round. Sad indeed. This is one of my hometown courses and I would bring friends and family here but not in the shape it's currently in.
Needs work
Not sure whats going on but the course needs alot of work. This is the growing season and most all the courses are in great shape. We putted through water on the greens as they watered them on a Sunday afternoon. I hit an approach shot and landed in dirt on the green. Lots of weeds and bare spots. Very very dissatisfied. With fall and winter around the corner , i dont know if they will get them back.
Course Needs Work
Overall it was a great day playing because you can’t beat a day on the course. It was a little wet but the fairways were beautiful and tee boxes were pretty decent. Tee boxes needed to be marked off better I’d say and the golf cart path is pretty much non existent. I will play again for sure but the greens needed some love and a cart path would be great. I’ll be back hopefully with better weather.
Which way do I go?
Played this course while on vacation. Decent enough layout, but the course was in rough condition. Many greens were splotchy and it seemed like probably half of them had been painted. Signs directing you back to the cart path for the next hole were nonexistent, so I frequently found myself on a maintenance path and had to either reverse course or cut across ignoring the “No Carts” signs.
This is a 2 star course.
The greens are atrocious. I thought since this place hosted the local city championship, that it would be ok. It is awful. Almost every green has multiple dirt spots. O.C. Welch should be embarrassed to have his name on this.
Bad!Bad!Bad!
Just a total waste of 26 for 9 forgettable holes. Pityfull!
As expected
Have been told a bunch to play here you will love it. So I did today and the course layout is nice not much rough as there is a lot of weeds and thin fairway as the rough bunkers was nice on the second hole was only time I was in them. The greens rolled decent and really good on a few holes and was faster than appeared. They need to do some work on a few of their greens and maybe move the red tees back a little as my girl friend didn’t like teeing off from the fairway instead of a tee box. Tee time was at 11:40 and was right on time. Putting green was horrible same as chipping green so we skippped that part. Greens are big wind makes a difference there as it is pretty open. Was a little sad that the cart girl never came back out during the busiest time of the day. She was pulling up to the clubhouse as we tee’d off and never seen her and #9 does not end by the clubhouse so make sure you take plenty of beer or water when you play here. Will play here again as long as it is under $28 on golf now. But should be around $20
Awful practice facilities
The courses chipping and putting greens are a poor excuse for greens. My backyard is in better condition to putt then the practice green. The round was significantly better. Score cards still do not have a map of the course layout. There is no cart path so there is cart wear everywhere. Not worth $45 to play go to Southbridge or crosswinds.
Bad condition course
The course is in very poor condition ! Go play another place !! Tee boxe, fairway, and almost all green need a lots of work !
We arrive 45 min before our tee off time and the guy ( i beleave he is the pro ) did not want us to go earlier because we booked with golf now ??
The worst of it is that there was absolutely no one on the course ??
That was the first and last time at bacon park !
Put your money elsewhere
Groups sent out every 10 mins, but level of play by golfers takes 15 mins per hole, resulting in long waits and delays every hole. Need someone to better regulate start times and pace of play.
Winter golf
Overall the course is in good condition however fairways grass is still dormant and quite bare making most shots difficult. Traps are in good shape, raked and good sand. Greens are extremely fast. Worth the money but expect minimal grass on the fairways.
