Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Rude ground keeper
First time playing there. Second hole, no signs to car path only. Cart didnt made any noise till it shot off. Try to put it on reverse and nothing, so me and the group push the cart out to the car path. Mind that I have a bad knee and i am wearing my knee brace. So i do not want to push a cart. So the grounds keeper comes and start hallaring , i said i was sorry didnt matter he keept yelling. This place was open greens were not to good. But over all is a decent place. But with that rude ground keeper yall lost a customer.
The Muny
Have played course in earlier days and the original layout. Tees and fairways were in good playability. Greens still need slot of work. Over all, still a good course to play.
I’ve been to Savannah four times the past 5 years and played at Bacon at least one round because of the location. Over the years I see little improvement. Not a bad course layout but many of the greens are in terrible shape, so much so you can see the underlayment in places. Cart paths in many areas are snappy and rough going, despite the use of a tracking system telling you to keep to the right or left to protect the fairways and other areas badly in need of water. If you don’t see the instruction on the screen attached to the cart or move in a area that says no carts your cart will immediately lock on you until you figure out how to restart the cart. More telling, if you are new to the course and not familiar with the system, no one at the front desk will tell you when you first sign in. At least when I was there.
There is no course manager regulating the pace of play. I started as a single at 11:30 am and ended the round at 4:30. Don’t play here on the weekend unless you have a lot of time on your hands. Things may be better during the week when people are working..
A little more investment in the course , better course management especially related to the pace of play And with some TLC this could potentially be a fairly attractive course.
WILL NEVER PLAY HERE AGAIN BECAUSE OF THE MARSHAL
We called ahead and booked a 7:50 tee time for five which they said wasn’t a problem. We should up to play and they let’s us tee off. As we are playing we were constantly harassed by the Marshal. Even though the group ahead of us wasn’t cleared from the green. He said it doesn’t matter you can’t drive it anyway if the next hole is open you need to move on and play it. He threatened to call the “Pro” to have him come out and hurry us up. Tee off was 07:50 finished the round with five people at 11:45. Will not come back nor will I recommend this course because of this experience.
Getting a little roughs
This course gets a lot of play, but it’s getting a little work worn. Some of the greens are in not so good shape making putts difficult. On this particular day there was a large group of probably 10 or 12 players that went out in front of us, split up into two four/fivesomes. This made play extremely slow, as most of the time it appeared that these young guys wanted to talk and drink beer rather than play golf.
It was quite maddening to be stuck behind them and when they had to stop at the turn to talk with the drink wagon girl, it became ridiculous. Fortunately one of them signaled us to go ahead, But there was still another foursome in their group ahead of us.
This course is too crowded and getting beat up pretty good. Going to go elsewhere for awhile until things get less crowded and they fix some of the bad greens and other spots on the course.
Great Layout needing maintenance
This is a great Layout of a Donald Ross design with the tricky greens you would expect. Being a metro course it was of course needing some more upkeep and maintenance.
Savannah Golf
This course was pleasant to play. From the live oaks dappled with spanish moss to the well placed hazards, I found this course to be on the easier side. The cart came with an iced cooler which came in handy. In the area I reccomend checking them out
Great local golf course
This course is improving and the greens are in good shape. Easy place to play for a fair price.
Past its peak.
Bacon Park was our choice because we decided to play on the spur of the moment and it was the only course we could find with openings.. The tees were a jumble of grasses and weeds and the greens were extremely rough and weedy. I know it's early in the year but this course appears to be a course that was once a nice course but has fallen into harder times due to other competition. Who knows till you get there!
A good challenge for any skilled golfer. I enjoyed my round with friends and co workers. Fair playing conditions. Staff was friendly and made you feel welcome, I will play another round soon.
Greens were terrible
The course was in bad shape all the way around. White tee boxes were barren. The red tee boxes were just plunked down in the middle of the fairway (not really tee boxes). The fairways were mediocre. The greens were terrible, not smooth had green growths all over - very hard to make putts when they bump bump bump across the green. The cart paths were rutted and bumpy. The GPS in the cart was nice. The staff was nice.
