Needs some work

Great staff, great old design but it needs some work to get it to it's potential. I hope the City of Savannah knows what could be done with this gem.

Course could be great

The layout of the course is very fun. Provides a challenge on the greens without making it unplayable for a hacker. However, it needs a few things to get to the next level. First thing they need is to spend the money to lay a cement cart path throughout the course, and then enforce cart path only or 90degree rule on the rainy days/weeks we get. The course is so beat up from the carts and mud that I don’t know that it will ever recover. Next would be to identify pin locations and share with the patrons playing. Simple way to improve the course and help out the paying customers. Last thing would be to put a concession stand/restrooms/vending machine station at the 9th green where the 4th green and 5th and 10th tee boxes all meet. Do those things and the course will be top notch!

Wet conditions

I booked this round with fully prepared to walk due to the rain the previous night. I was surprised to hear that the course did not have cart paths and was allowing players to drive on the course. The course should be walking or pull carts only in its present state. The 7th fairway and others had deep ruts from golf carts trying to find a safe path.

The greens are in great shape for winter and played smoothly. The course is straight forward and a good causal layout.

I will play again in the spring and see what the shape of the course is after this wet winter.

Decent for winter conditions

Fairways are short as grass has gone dormant. Still making shots is not too bad. Greens are in pretty good shape. We’ ve had a lot of rain this month and some fairways are still pretty soggy. Overall, if you can get a hot deal, it’s worth playing.

Once and done

I appreciate the Course being built back in 1926. But the Conditions were poor.

I was very disappointed overall with the layout and the shape of the course. I would not play there again.

Bacon Park is cooking the Bacon!

Greens were in good shape considering this time of year. Only disappointment was my GPS couldn’t find the back nine.

Nice round on a chilly day

Course is in very good shape. Tee boxes and fairways are great. There were a few wet spots due to recent rains. Only complaint was that greens didn’t seem to roll consistently. Ball speeds varied from one green to the next. I’m not sure if they are rotating mowing or what, but my Pitts did not roll consistent speeds. Wife also complained about the same thing. Otherwise a nice day and a nice round.

Rooting for this classic muni gem

Conditioning is an important component of any golf experience. But it's a testament to the quality of the design of a course when one can have a great time even when the course is not at its best, maintenance-wise. That was my experience in August at Bacon Park, a well-restored Donald Ross course. The greens had suffered from the uneven weather of 2018, but nevertheless the routing and vibe of the course is undeniable. It reflects its home city: warm, humid, full of live oaks and Spanish moss. The three reachable par fives and the long par-3 17th make it worth the green fees, which are very reasonable. If you're in the area, check it out.

No starting marshal ruins this course

Went out on a Sunday 1010 tee time get to the first tee at 1005 and theres four groups ahead of us teeing off, later in the round we found out all these groups had a tee time later than 1010 but teed off because they said no one was there to stop them. No clear cart path so there is cart path wear on edges of the fairway. As stated theres no starting marshal and theres definitely no marshal checking on the pace of play. Greens are challenging and fun course layout is also fun just no way to the club house after 9 to get food or beverage. This course could be great if a little more care was put into it.

Thankful for the hot deal

Course conditions were rough. Although greens we’re decent. Suprised to see walkers allowed on a Sunday. Watched the walkers chip and putt 5 balls each with a single behind them. Watched a single putt 4 times from same spot with a two some behind him in the fairway. Multiple groups of 5-6 golfers scattered through the course. Saw no staff patrolling the grounds during my round. I was a single and played behind a two some that never let me play through even though I was parked behind their cart 3 times on the front 9 while they were just starting to tee off. Based on course conditions can’t believe the Savannah City AM is Still played here. Always wanted to play this course and was very disappointed. Little or no grass on the range before the round should have been my heads up.

Great course

Love Bacon, beautiful oak trees and wide forgiving fairways. Short course with lots of elevated and challenging greens make up for it though. I would recommend to anybody in the area looking for a fun round.

Bacon Park, Savannah, Georgia

I booked this course based upon photos and ratings. The course was completely dried out..driving range was nothing but dirt...tee boxes had little or no grass as did the fairways. Many of the fairways were rock hard with very little grass. Greens were overgrown with poa annua at least 1/2 inch tall! A number of the greens were nearly dead from lack of water.

Pace of play was horrendous! No rangers to move the players along.

Boring course

This course offers no challenge and conditions a barely acceptable. Needs a lot of work to bring it up to snuff Restrooms are available on the course and we were 300-400 feet away and smell was disgusting. The septic tank needs to be emptied. I definitely would not recommend this course. It is overpriced.

Winter Golf Not Worth It

The staff is always friendly, a great atmosphere, you get the impression you could meet good friends there. The layout isn't magnificent, but it's not bad, and frankly, who am I to take shots at Donald Ross, who probably belongs on the Mt. Rushmore of golf? So those are the positives. The negatives: I know it's Winter, but heck, it's just not fun when you stripe a drive down the middle and are rewarded with a bare dirt lie. Pretty much every single time. Not every course in this region is like that, there are ways of keeping at least some grass on the fairways even in February. I know this is a matter of dollars = upkeep, and the dollars just aren't there. I get it, not necessarily the super's fault, but it kills the quality of the round. So the pressure's on your short game, but the greens are often inconsistent. One hole might be lightning fast, the next like velcro, Wears you down. Sometimes the holes are kind of mounded with a slight crowning, anthill effect which comes from cutting new holes too hastily and yanking the ground up slightly. Typical of the round: short par 4, 275 yard drive perfectly in middle, 2/3 wedge off bare dirt (so I had to hit it perfectly), hit to 18 feet, but 3 putt because green's suddenly super slow after a previous green had been super fast. Next hole long par 4, 250 right down middle, rewarded with long iron approach off of bare dirt, get it to fringe, chip to 5', but again, the greens undo you: the slightly mounded hole repels any shot other than one hit online within the width of maybe a pencil eraser. Bogey-bogey. Many of the greens, any putt over 2.5', you either drill perfectly into the middle, hitting it hard, or it drifts right or left as it slows and catches that crown. Very frustrating! In the Spring, Summer, Fall, fine, it's a good enough value and a historic layout, but Winter golf here's not worth it.
