Bacon Park's greens were still recovering in August 2018, but they have plenty of interesting contours. This is the 15th. Photo submitted by TimGavrichGP on 11/07/2018
Horrible!!!!!!
Bacon Park is the worst course I've ever played in my 65 years of golfing. The course conditions are deplorable. Fairways are devoid of grass, tee boxes besides being mostly rock hard dirt are impossible to get a tee into, and the greens are like asphalt. This redone Donald Ross layout would make the original architect turn over in his grave. The only saving grace is the friendly, helpful clubhouse staff and starter. I played Bacon Park in late March and it was bad...but not as bad as it is now.
Course Needs Lots Of Work
Surprisingly, the sand traps were well maintained but the fairways and greens were like concrete. The starter/ranger, Bill Whalen, was very cordial and helpful. He made it a point to check on our foursome several times to make sure we weren't having any difficulties. The gentleman who checked us in was very pleasant with a great sense of humor. Unfortunately, we were expecting pristine conditions from O.C. Welch Golf Properties and were sadly disappointed. Maybe later in the year things will improve dramatically. Our group only played 9 holes and the ninth hole is a very long way from the clubhouse That doesn't seem like a wise course design..
Since the renovation
This course i would say is better than average. I enjoy playing it and I would recommend it to others and have. The renovation to the original Donald Ross design has made the course more fun to play. The greens are firm and fast. They have more grass on them than most courses I have played nearby this winter. The course like all others I have played recently is winter dormant. Overall the course handles rain well. Where it doesn't they have recently added french drains to attempt to remove excess water.
One of the best values around
Now that the course has had extensive renovations done to it, this is one of the best deals in town for golf. One of my favorite places to play...
OC Welch deserves high priase for restoring this course!
Excellent shape. Great bunkers and greens. Play the restored Ross 18.
Not the same Bacon
I had the privilege of playing Bacon Park in Savannah Ga on Sunday. The staff were very polite and checking in was convenient. I have played this course before about 3 or 4 yrs ago. The recent renovations were much needed. The greens were in excellent shape and the fairways were well maintained for the winter time. I would strongly suggest if you are able to do it, that you walk this course. The tee box and greens are close to each other so it sets up for a walking friendly pace.
Forced to Pair Up
Wanted to play a quick round just by myself and made reservation on GolfNow for just one person(which has always allowed me to play alone when I have booked that way in the past. Other times I have booked for groups, but sometimes I just want to get in a quick round by myself). On showing up at the clubhouse the guy at the check-in insisted I pair up with another group on the tee, as the course was crowded. At that point I refused and left the course without ever having played, even though I had prepaid for my round to GolfNow. Something is wrong with the system on both ends.

This course is in great shape. It was just redesigned back to the Donald Ross original design. A great value.
Donald Ross 1926
Final renovations to the eighteen hole 1926 Donald Ross designed course at Bacon Park were finally completed in late October. I've had the opportunity to play the course numerous times since then, and have thoroughly enjoyed it. Many of the greens are elevated with undulating surfaces which makes putting very challenging. The overgrown weeds and brush have been removed from the old growth trees surrounding the fairways. It is really a beautiful place, and it is so conveniently located in town. The staff is super friendly and prices are comparable to other area courses.
Newly opened bacon park
The refurbished 18 holes is now open for play. I was very impressed with the course. Not overly difficult from tee to green. The greens are very firm. The greens keeper likes to put the pins on top of knobs. Otherwise I liked it very much and plan to play it often. If the pins continue to be on the knobs I will say something to the management. I think that could drive away business. Frustration for the golfer on the greens is not the way to win customer loyalty. Scratch golfer.
Terrible course and RUDE staff. Will never return!
This was my first time playing bacon park since the renovation of the course. My experience was so ridiculous, I have to begin with this longish story...
My friend and I arrived at 10:45 for our 11:30 tee time. We were greeted rudely, with barely a glance in our direction, the older fellow behind the desk said, "yes?". Once I told him I booked a Golfnow tee time for 11:30, he tells me we are early (as always...to warm up!) and we have to wait for the other two golfers who booked through Golfnow and "maybe" can get out at 11:30. I didn't think much of it and got some range balls.
At 11:30 exactly my friend and I are on the tee box when said older fellow comes outside and yells at us asking what we are doing. I calmly inform him of my 11:30 tee time and remind him I booked through Golfnow. He says, "oh yeah, well you should check with me before you tee off. Go ahead and go now". Again, whatever...I say nothing.
After we tee off and about about to drive down to our balks, the guy comes out AGAIN, yelling for us to "hold on there". Comes over and says, "One of your Golfnow 'buddies' just showed up. Pull over to the side and let these two groups go ahead, wait for him and whenever he is ready you can go."
I asked if he was seriously going to penalize us and make us wait and get stuck behind other groups when myself and my buddy had no one in front of us! He responded, "yep". I couldn't believe he was serious, and told him it was ridiculous of him to do that. I didn't want to argue and make a scene with other groups waiting behind me so we waited patently for 30 mins as 2 groups played through us and our third player got ready.
Once our 3rd finally tees off without introducing himself, he plays the first hole with us and promptly drives off without a word!!!
So after all of this wacky stuff happens, we play the next 17 holes of this "golf course"...and I use the term VERY loosely. The tee boxes aren't differentiated from the fairways at all other than the tee markers themselves, both the tee boxes and fairways are maintained at a below average level and mainly consists of mud and weeds. Some fairways can be as hard as a rock, other squish beneath your feet because of how soft and wet they are. The greens are quick, but very bumpy and hard as well. Not receptive to good shots at all.
Overall just a terrible experience, and I wish I would have never given this course another chance.
Cant wait for next year
This course has had some improvement on it and it clearly shows that.
The first full 18 are ready to play and by next year >>>"this will be the place to play"
just plain WOW, the greens have some slope and depth and the fairways will accommodate an off day for most players.
all the new grasses will get a chance to grow over time and fill in.
I think that the final 18 is being re-done this year making this the golf course to join if new to the area.
Great to see a muni course doing well
Donald Ross gem
This is a city-owned municipal course that was recently given to a new management company. They have done a tremendous job renovating the course to its original 1926 design. I have played this course many times but this was my first time around the renovation and its spectacular. The course will mature over time but it's easy to appreciate the Donald Ross classic design: straightforward approaches with crowned greens and complex slopes. Can't wait to play it again. Well worth the two year wait!
Very disappointed
a 27 hole course. 9 holes just redone. It was in okay shape. Another 9 was closed, stating they were starting work on it soon. The other 9 that made up the 18 was horrible. Greens were 90% dirt. They had two pin placements on each of the greens. Fairways not cut. Just flat a bad experience. We quit after the first nine.
Terrible course, terrible staff
I live nearby so I like to go to the driving range. Every time I walk into the clubhouse the staff is extremely rude. It is like I am inconveniencing them. I stand by the register for a couple minutes while they finish their conversations and they look at me like they don't understand why I am standing there.
And the course is terrible.
Summer Golf
It was hot. We had an 11:40 tee time and in mid August it's to be expected but we still had a good time.
The course is going through a restoration but it did not interfere with our game. The staff were very helpful and friendly.
city course!
Been renovating this course for years, and the overall conditions are beyond poor. The greens are so ate up, its like putting on a scab. Wouldn't play there even if it was free!
GREAT BEGINNER COURSE!
This was our first time playing in Savannah and was looking for something reasonably priced. The price was fantastic! First 9 holes were under repair but very playable, last 9 holes were in very good condition. Not many hazards so It was great for me as a beginner! I would recommend this course to others and the driving range was very nice as well. Again, great for beginners, not highly challenging. Will definitely return!!
Just plain bad... enough said
There is far too much hype for this course since its redesign. The course is in really bad shape. poorly designed, and should be no more than $10. At that rate I would maybe consider playing here. Only reason I played here multiple times, was for a golf league. Avoid it if you can.
