Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Gateway National Is A Great Track

The course is in outstanding condition. The $64 weekday (Friday) rate is on the higher side in the area.

Gateway National is always one of the best tracks in the St. Louis metro area.

Speaking of great tracks, Gateway has added a black & white start line on the cart path by the #1 tee. Also, a finished line at the 18th green.

They have also added scenic decorative covers to the porta pottys. First time I've seen this before.

Impressed my out of town friend

Had a friend visiting who had always wanted to play Gateway, so we did. Feel like the price was pretty high for so early in the year but the course was packed.

Looked like they had cut down a lot of the tall grasses between the fairways so there were TONS of old balls that were visible. Ha ha! The course was in very nice shape for mid-April. Could see that the greens had been punched a while ago but fully healed and rolled fantastic!

One downer is the little restroom between holes 9 and 10. It was flat out nasty. Can’t imagine a woman using it as it was gross and needed to be cleaned.

My buddy was most impressed by the bent grass fairways. He very much enjoyed the challenges on many of the holes and loved that you can see the Arch from a number of locations on the course.

Nothing To Complain About With Gateway National

The course was in excellent condition. They aerated the greens on March 23-24 but they putted fairly well just 10 days later.

Greens Aerated on March 23-24, Course in Good Shape

Gateway National just aerated their greens on March 23-24. They use the smaller holes and use enough sand to fill in all the holes. I thought they putted much better than I anticipated. They do a good job of communicating with groups that have tee times right after the aeration. They inform you if you want to cancel, that is fine, If you want to play, you get 30% of your green fees.

They always do a good job of having staff for the beverage cart on the course, the 10th tee snack shop and the restaurant.

The pace of play was a bit slow. We had to play the par 5, 3rd hole as a par 3 because of maintenance in the fairway. The pin location was unfair on that hole, with it placed right at the top of a tier on the green.

Excellent Conditions For February

When I arrived at Gateway National, I saw they were rolling the greens. You don't see too many public golf courses ever rolling thier greens - and not in February.

Gateway National takes great pride in their golf course. The course was in exceptional shape for February. The greens were smooth and on the fast side.

They are working on improving the grass and/or adding more tees boxes on the par 3's. Holes 4 & 17 had temporary mats to hit off. Looked like they just completed their control burn of the grasses between the holes.

The senior weekday rate of $47 is terrific for this upscale course. They even had a beverage cart out on a Wednesday in February.

Extremely well kept

I've played this course twice now. Once today, once last fall. In the fall, not exaggerating, there wasn't a single leaf on the fairway. Today, in the cold, the staff was super friendly and the course was still healthy. Im probably still below the skill level needed for some of the holes, however it is still a pleasure to play and I cant wait to come back again and again as I improve. Best course I've played within driving distance of St. Louis.

One Of The Best In The St. Louis Metro Area

The course is in good shape. The greens have no issues and were quick. The weekday senior rate of $57 is excellent to this upscale golf course.

The course had excessive rain about a month ago, and you will see spots where the grass is brown from the flooding (#3 fairway comes to mind). Some tees do need attention (yellow tees on 2, 4 & 17). Some small trees are popping up in front of the 13th tee, obstructing the view of the fairway.

Get out and play Gateway.

Make sure you don’t take the back roads

The back roads are completely closed off and gps will send you spiraling. Worst experience ever and it was a shame bc I never even got to play the course.
