Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Good course
The course is in great shape. It's one of the better courses in the area.
Outstanding Greens. Significant Improvements Made Too.
For late April, the greens are truly outstanding. They are running smooth and fast. They are at a speed where you think you hit the perfect putt but it rolls by the hole 3-4 feet. Doubtful, anyone will come close to the quality of these greens this year.
Significant changes to the course have been made too. New golf carts which say "Gateway National Golf Links at the Raceway". Not sure if a name change is forthcoming. Building a new snack shack behind hole 10 and newly planted tee boxes on 7, 12 and the yellow tees on 15. However, they are not in use yet.
The price of $75 was in-line with the other upscale public golf courses in the metro area. The starter was very friendly and even allowed us to tee off before our scheduled tee time becuse the groups in front of us had not shown up. I saw the beverage cart at least 5 times during the round and a person attending to the food/bar area inside. All the bunkers had been raked and our pace of play was fine.
This may be in the future plans, but the tee boxes on 10 and the white/blue boxes on 15, need an upgrade like holes 7 & 12 got last year. The other recommendation is to put a sign with the yardage on the temporary tees on 7 & 12. FYI...the temporary tee on hole 7 is a mat.
I've alsways put Gateway National Golf Links in the top 5 upscale public golf courses in the metro area. It appears they are committed to making positive changes to the grounds/management of the course - which is great to see. But everone needs to play Gateway because the greens are the best you will play this year.
Cabin fever has set it
Played the course on a 30 degree day. There was maybe 10 people total in the course for the day, walked it to stay warm, never was rushed or waited on anyone. Our 3some walked it in 3.2 hours. Fairways were soft and great to hit from. Most tees could still get the peg in the ground, but the greens were frozen. Not complaining, just had to play it way short to roll up to the hole. It beat sitting at home. They have re-sodded and seeded some of the tee boxes on multiple holes, looking forward to playing it again once it’s all grown in and in season.
Doesn’t disappoint
I hit Gateway when I catch a hot deal , never disappoints
Course was soggy and there were plenty of poor areas. Lost a ball right on front of a green when it went into a very small ditch - NOT a hazard or trap - and I couldn't find it. That's not good.
Great Course
Great course with excellent views and is in excellent condition considering that it is November. Only course in Missouri and Illinois that still has green grass. Only complaint is that the cart people didn’t have hot drinks in the cold weather.
