Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

One of the best fall/winter courses in STL
Gateway National is perhaps the best all-season course in St. Louis. The bent grass fairways remain green through December and the greens are always A+. On Nov. 20th, the greens were the fastest I had played in some time and we were off the path. The course is long and challenging and the par 3s require a degree of target golf. While great year-round, you will especially enjoy this course Oct. through March when other courses are still getting up-to-speed.
Great condition for Fall
We played this course on one of only a few nice days this month. Even though we had snow a week earlier, the course was in great shape. We were even able to take carts out on the course.
Greens were in outstanding shape. Tee boxes were a little soft, but pretty good for this time of year.
Watch for email special deals. We were able to get a great price with lunch online.
Winter golf
Gateway is one of the top public courses in St. Louis ! Greens are in great shape as is almost everywhere on the course . I love the bent grass fairways which means it's the only course around that will be green all year. The course also drains faster than anywhere else around, which means it's not cart path only when most others are!
Grrrr8 course
Very much fun to play while challenging with great views of the arch
Great Conditions But Pace Of Play Still An Issue
The course is in great shape. It took on a lot of rain the day before but it drains extremely well.
Pace of play continues to be an issue. Waited on every shot on the back nine. Again, no course ranger on course. Not only do they need a course ranger to speed up play but to protect their golf course. With all the rain and cart path only rules, numerous carts riding around the fairways putting tire tracks in their fairways.
The green fees of 59.99 is too high for late October too.
Fall golf
Caught a wonderful afternoon at Gateway on Columbus Day. Course looked great and played fair. Only a once a year treat for me so was happy with the experience. Running out of weekends to play!
Great as always
Great course. Can be a little pricey at peak times but always in good shape, challenging but fair. Gateway far oaks and stone wolf when kept in good shape are the places to go in the metro east.
Greens
Was not aware the greens had just been aerated and covered in sand. Made the putting game impossible.
Good round today
My good golfer showed up today. The course was in good shape other than the ground under repair from the excessive amount of rain this year. Pace of the greens was good, good speed but not excessive. Pace of play was excellent this time, one of the best I’ve had this year.
I need more golf balls
This is a difficult, links-style course that places a premium on keeping the ball in play. Native grass, bunkers galore, and the occasional water hazard make this a serious challenge. Some beautiful views of the St. Louis skyline make this course really special.
Great course for the better player
Fanastix course overall. Love the bent grass fairways that make you hot your irons well. And puts a premium on hitting fairways. Greens are in good condition. And not super fast. About 10 on the Stimp.
Great Course
Best public course in the saint Louis metro area. Great condition.
Great Course
Wonderful course, well maintained, but like most courses in the area STL bumpkins that don’t repair ball marks and their beaver pelt divots, it can look like your standard Normandie muni! C’mon people! Pace of play was really poor for a Wednesday, our twosome smoked thru the back nine (started on 10 today) in about an hour and ten, only to crawl thru the front 9 in 3 hours, ugh!! Besides that, beautiful place, keep up the good work!
IMPRESSED
Course received over 7" in 36 hours before our round. Traps were ponds and retention pond was overflowing and being pumped. Obviously played long but they had the course in great shape besides the traps. The greens were great and they had fairways in great shape where there was 3' of water only 12 hours earlier. The Grounds Crew should be commended as you could see it was all hands on deck...THANK YOU FOR YOUR EFFORT
Pace Of Play Is A Major Issue
Gateway National has a major problem with pace of play.
I waited 5-15 minutes on every shot with an early tee time on a Saturday. On these holes (2,4,7,10,12,14 & 17), there were TWO foursomes on the tee waiting! No rangers to be seen on the course.
I will not recommend this course until this problem is rectified. This course has the highest green fees in the metro area and you should expect more.
Overall, the course conditions were very good. Greens were very good. Bunkers were raked, Fairways were good also, with only some brown spots on hole #9. Some of the tees had some significant crabgrass on them (9,10 & 17).
Impressive Conditions
Of all the St. Louis area courses I've played in 2019, Gateway National is in the best shape of all of them. The course also drains very well with all the large amounts of rain we have received this year. Terrific conditions - get out and play Gateway National soon!
