Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Amazing as always
Course is in immaculate shape, even for early in the golf season. Greens are rolling nicely and bent grass fairways are perfect. I love this course and play it as often as possible. Definitely check it out!
Course in Great Shape
Course was in great shape. Play was horribly slow on the back nine.
Fine Track
Second time playing Gateway National. A most enjoyable layout. We've had a lot of rain recently, so the course was wet and required cart paths only, but the pace of play was fine and the course was generally draining well.
Won’t be back
They set us up a tee time the same time a golf tournament started. Paid $80 for 2 people to play 9 holes. Conditions of the course we’re not great. Paths were extremely bumpy and had to hold on to everything. Got to the hole they told us to go to and a high school team was already on it. We went back and they said “well then just go to the next one.” Very annoyed at this point, we went, but by the time we got to the next one they we’re already on it. We asked for a refund because this course was a waste of our time and not worth the money. They gave us the wrong amount of change. Sent an email to the course and still have yet to get a reply. Very unhappy.
Always a good time
Come to gateway for a challenge of all skill levels
Early spring at Gateway
The course was aerated yesterday and today so the greens were not their usual top notch but you can see all of the work the grounds crew is doing and in 2 weeks the course will be in spectacular shape. I still love their bent grass fairways and they are the only course that's green this early in the year.
It’s gone downhill
Used to LOVE Gateway. I understand it’s March....but REALLY bumpy greens, hard to find grass to play off of anywhere except the fairways and greens (I’m sure there’s a good joke there) and the person in charge of the pro shop was not friendly and very unfriendly. Hopefully they get the place back to top shape as it was a short couple years ago.
Bureaucratic course management
In a sentence… 16 golf carts on number 10 at noon time standing there watching each other T off. Frost delay? It was frozen the whole time. No matter what tee? 1 or 10? It’s December in St Louis. I’ve been to others Walters management courses .... and they said the same exact thing. I also have played everywhere else! That cannot be real and never happens anywhere else. NEVER. it’s a mathematical loop and cannot be substantiated. Gathered the money, back the groups up, and half the groups never finished leaving disgusted as you see the other nine empty next to you during the warm of the afternoon? Zero common sense. No carts in the parking lot to pick up your clubs? Let the people golf?
One of the best
Quite frankly I don't play Gateway more often b/c the prices can be pretty steep and most of my buddies aren't interested in paying $70+ to play a round. I've only played the course twice and loved it both times. The greens were in incredible shape. The fairways looked good, a lot of people don't know that you need to fill the bent grass divots with sand but conditions were amazing for December. Certainly a bit of the links feel, I love the native grasses and marshes throughout. If you're driving the ball well you can score pretty well on the course. Reminded me a bit of some courses in Carolina with some marshes and some controlled landing zones. The par 3's, I personally felt played tough, there is from my understanding always wind at Gateway and the angles of the par 3's made it a bit tricky but that's fun. As far as public courses in the metro this is in my top 4.
Please do not allow this review to affect your decision to play this course or not. Sounds to me like this reviewer has never.been on a golf course before. This course is 100% the best public course in the bi-state area and the ONLY public course with bent grass fairways around. It is always in immaculate shape, from tee to green. They could not be more kind and accommodating as well. Do yourself a favor and play this course and then play it again and again!
