Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Great course, you should play!
This was my first time playing the course, and I will return quickly. The tee boxes and fairways were in excellent condition. The bent grass fairways allowed for great control with iron shots. I caught the greens after an aeration, so the putting was tough. Some greens had a large volume of sand and were bumpy. Also, maybe its just a public course thing, but there were a large amount of ball marks needing repair. All these greens issues made reading the greens and gauging speed putts difficult. Wind is a factor with this course also. Some hole played longer than the listed yardage. All in all, this was an excellent course and I will be returning! You should give it a try.
Course condition was amazing
From the tee boxes to the green the course is in amazing shape. Overall my favorite course in the Saint Louis area.
One of the most unique courses on this side of the river
Great course. The fairway grass is awesome. Wish the green fees were less and I would play it more often!
Plush
"Gateway is one of the best courses in St Louis to play golf. The fairways were absolutely amazing, and I truly mean absolutely amazing, you will not find a course in this area that can come close to competing with Gateway!"
My Son And I
great tee boxes and fairway was excellent. hit in the short grass and its teed up,'
greens ran true and fast a little beat up here and there.
Good course
Course was good. We got stuck behind a slow 2-some that took 8 practice swings each shot. Ended up skipping a hole ahead of them so we could get as many holes in before dark.
Bring. Extra. Balls.
If you're looking for a challenging course with exceptional playing conditions, look no further than Gateway National. If you live in the St. Louis area, you know that unless you play at a high-end country club, you're gonna be putting on greens that resemble the Moon. Nobody repairs their ball marks. It's like a disease or something. But, when you come to Gateway, you'll see greens that people respect and care for. If you hit up twilight, be careful of backed up tee boxes. But, for $25, you won't find a better deal after work to relieve some stress by whacking a few balls into pristine fairways with a stunning view of downtown St. Louis at almost every turn. If there's one downside to Gateway, it's the amount of people that play. You won't find another course in the area with a better tee-to-green experience than Gateway. I wish they'd pay me to say this stuff, but they won't. I've tried.
Go play Gateway!
Best Course in the Area
This was the second time I played this course and it is nothing short of amazing. I love the bent grass fairways and the tee boxes are in very good
Greens need help
The greens need help, not from the staff but from the golfers. How hard is it after sticking the green with a good approach shot to bend over and fix your ball mark? Some greens it was like putting on a plinko board from all the un-repaired ball marks. The other question I have is "does this course ever dry out?" We played another course the same day 30 minutes north of here and the fairways were hard and fast with very receptive greens. We were expecting the same at gateway. This is a "Links" course that doesn't play like one. I think it would really change the character of the course if they'd let it play fast.
In good shape, except a few spots
I play here 2-3x/yr. They keep it in nice shape and it's a challenging layout. There are a couple of holes (#9, and a couple on the back) where there are basically letting multiple bunkers go. Need to either repair & maintain these or sod them over. It looks bad and detracts from an otherwise good course.
If you've never played here, it plays a bit long even from the whites, partially because of the wind which always blows a fair amount at Gateway. Unless, you're a single digit handicap, you may want to avoid playing from the blue tees.
Greens beat Up
Nice layout. Previous playing was great. During this round found greens in much need of work to repair divots. People need to repair their divots. It would be nice for everyone. Repair yours and thee others please.
Nice course
First time playing Gateway. Challenging but not so much that it takes away the fun. Bent grass fairways are unique.
Nice course within 20 minutes from the St. Louis Arch
Nice fun course, flat & relatively easy to play. Soft greens. Easy & short drive from the St. Louis Arch.
Open layout
Very playable links course. Greens have gotten a little hard. Just have to play a little short now as it will roll out even with spin.
Decent for the price
Fairways were beautiful, greens pretty beat up from divots, mosquitoes all over the place, still standing water from the heavy rains lately. Teed off at 530 pm for an 18 hole rate, sprinklers went off at entire course at 755, could not tee off on some spots. No beverage cart on the course.
Great course
Will definitely be playing again real soon and a some great views of st louis
nice soft fairways
what a wonderful place to play. the fairways are so soft its easy on your wrist if you take divots. The course is long from the back tees that's why I feel it was very difficult for me. lost many balls but found more than I lost.
4.5 hours on a thursday afternoon is just too slow
Would have given corse five stars except for the pace of play and the bunkers being more mud than sand. Overall I enjoy this course for what it is, a sold test of your game in a very convient location.
This course has bad customer service!
I personally didn't like it at all. It was my first time playing & the staff offered no assistance or information when I checked in ... It seem as though they were doing me a favor by letting me play on their course! I didn't play the course very well but the weather was windy & cold; however, I don't feel the need to go back on a good day to see if I can play it better. I got an online reservation hot deal & played for $27 but would never pay 44.50 to play a round there. I think my experience was dampened by the lack of customer service at the beginning & never got better after that. Would not recommend!
Slow go
Really enjoy the track, REALLY DON'T enjoy the pace of play here at all. So much potential and staff does care at all! Really a shame.
