Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Golfer Reviews
Excellent Course!!!
Course has a great layout and was in great shape. Love hitting out of the bentgrass fairways. Very challenging course that rewards good golf shots, and fairly punishes shots that are off target. Choose which set of tees you play wisely because the traps and hazards are strategically placed. One of the top 2 or 3 public courses in the St. Louis area.
Nice walk
Staff did a nice job clearing the last group of a scramble tourney. The group was holding up play. After the Marshall cleared the group the pace for the remaining 15 holes was great. Fairways in pretty good shape, but lots of players not sanding divots.
5 hours and didn't play 18
Showed up for a 4PM tee time and there were 5 groups of 4 on the tee box. 2 groups were making the turn from 18 to go play the front while others were teeing off late. No ranger/Marshall to keep pace of play or starter to figure out which of the 5 groups should have teed off first. Poorly ran. Greens were also in rough shape.
Confused!
The good...bent grass fairways in good shape if you can avoid the excessive divots. Greens in very good shape, but as with most public courses, golfers don't repair their pitch marks.
The layout is interesting and picturesque as advertised.
The bad...As for the best public course in St Louis...I hope not and I doubt it. This probably was a great course at some point, but it needs serious attention. Everything from the fairways, to the empty sand bottles laying around at most par three tee boxes, to the ragged deteriorating wood bridges...apparently they just don't care.
Then, there was the knucklehead on a fairway mower on number 11, continued to mow while our group and other's try to play. Absolutely didn't care! Placed a call to the Pro shop...nothing was done. Again, its a shame because the course was interesting and fun to play. Go have a good round but don't premium price, its not worth it. Nicest person in the clubhouse...the gal with the big smile behind the bar!
Gateway
Best public course around STL. Beautiful and Fair.
Windy and mo marshall
Very windy and the ball marks on greens and divots in fairway could have been fixed and should have been enforced by a marshall. What a shameful way to treat a good course.
awesome course
the greens are fast, and the fairways are very easy to hit out of (bent grass). I would play here more often if I lived closer.
Great course
One of the best courses in St. Louis area to play by far. Bent grass fairways are awesome!
Love the fairways
Probably one of my favorite courses to play. Fairways are in great shape and the greens are fast. Challenging but not crazy difficult.
Gateway is awesome
I have played Gateway numerous times. I love the course. Everything was great except the kid in the pro shop. The pro shop was empty and it was not busy. He saw us walk in yet kept us waiting while he stared at a computer screen. When he did walk out he was not friendly and was rather rude. I don't need the kid to wipe my clubs down but at least be polite to your patrons. After all, they pay your salary! Bottom line, Gateway is a fantastic course and I'll play it again. I won't let the smug kid in the pro shop deter me.
Nice layout
This course has a great layout. It is fun to play with an assortment of tees to choose from. The staff are very friendly and not too overbearing if you want to be left alone. I played on a Thursday afternoon and was surprised of the number of patrons who were there. A Marshall was not present so there were a lot of groups of 5 and even a 6. There were a couple of times were I counted 4 groups on one hole. Aside from the long wait times you can't beat the scenery. I would have been a great deal more irritated if I would have payed full price. Thanks GolfNow.
Could be better
Played here on a gorgeous Saturday afternoon with my wife on a quick weekend away vacation. Course had a pretty cool layout, but with no hole map either on the scorecard or on the course, it made a number of holes difficult having never played it before. Overall tees/fairways in OK shape. Lots of weeds and crabgrass off the fairways. Greens were in excellent shape and the highlight of the course. Pace of play was slow, but tolerable until the turn. Waited behind 3 groups at 14 tee for 15 mins before deciding to call it quits. I rarely do this, but it was getting late and we had dinner plans. Had we finished, it would have easily been over a 5 1/2 hour round, which is just stupid. No rangers to be seen anywhere. People playing from the wrong tees who think their Tiger Woods. Other than the pace of play, I would come play again. I would never pay advertised full price for this course, which is north of $70/round unless the overall maintenance was improved.
Winds of Gateway
Gateway is one of the challenging premier course in the eastern St. Louis area. On a windy day (15-25) it can be a monster. Not getting to greens in regulation or hitting low hybrids on 150 yd. par 3's can be expected. The course, as usual, is in great shape. The bent grass fairways and greens are in very good shape now and will only get better. The greens run fairly fast and take care to read them for subtle breaks that cause birdies to be bogeys quickly. A great course and friendly staff. If you get a Hot Deal on Golfnow as we did..$20 jump on it.
Great 1st round of the year
This was my first round of the year and it couldn't have been on a better course. Pace of play was good, never had to wait and never rushed. Round was just under 4 hours. Fairways were great to hit off of when I found them and greens were running smooth. Course is in excellent condition.
Great on a discount
Found a Hot Deal for $25. Can't complain about much at that price. Had it been more expensive, I would have been a bit put off by the rock hard bunkers that hadn't seen a rake since 2013.
Great course!
I've played this course for years. Course was in great shape for early in the year. Must've aerated greens recently, but greens were in good shape. Price was very good too. I will definitely be back.
One of the finest courses in St. Louis area.
All fairways, tees and greens are in very, very good shape for this time of year. Some of greens are challenging but still within the ability of average golfer. I plan on playing this course often during the coming season AND RECOMMEND IT HIGHLY.
Good Couse
Great course, but recommned an intermediate set of tees for better than average female golfers. 6100 yards a bit long, and 5100 to short. 5800 would be great.
Enjoyed the course. Recommend to all golfers.
