Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

This is a players course. It palyes fair, no bull just good golf. The St Louis arch on the horizion is a great tension easer
You will need every club in your bag if you are a short knocker. For all the long ball guys... this course was made for you. Drive 270yds, approach with a mid or short iron and two putt, boy its great. Just like TV with no trees! You 've got to love it.
This is a great layout, continues to be the standard.
Gateway Golf links is a challenging course where the wind blows, and your game better not. No trees but plenty of trouble. I suggest the average golfer pay close attention to the handicap on the scorecard.
Great Course Close to Downtown
As my friends and I primarily live in the downtown loft area and nearby neighborhoods this course is a mainstay in our circuit.
Top tier course for the area with only a few minute drive can't be beat! Top that off with good views of the STL skyline and this course has ideal location to go with its excellent conditions and management.
Good layout in good condition
One of my favorite courses in the St. Louis area. Always in very good condition.
Played on a Monday morning and staffing was minimal. No starter or marshal. Single employee in golf shop performing multiple duties.
Since course does not go past clubhouse at the turn, recommend starting players on the back nine if halfway house is not staffed. This would allow golfers to get food and beverages after 9 holes.
Course in great condition .. some Greens had been aerated!
Course in great condition .. some Greens had been aerated! Played on a Sunday afternoon. Wasn't too busy . a lot of twosomes and threesomes .. played course in less than 4 hours! Got a hot deal thru GN so really ended up with a good deal!
best links style course in st louis great value on golfnow traps need work
best links style course in this area traps need work great value for the money
One of the best links style courses I have played
Played from the tips and it was a challenge. I'm a six handicap and felt pretty good about my 83. Greens had been drilled and top dressed but were in pretty good shape. No two holes were the same. A great lay-out.
Worth the golf discount price to play!
The course was in great late season condition. The greens stilled shown signs of being irriated, but putted good. The course has kind of a flat lay out, with the course defense being well placed fairway bunkers and waist areas, ungulating greens and wind.
great views of downtown St Louis
Challenging course, fast greens...be nice if golfers would repair ball marks
Best course in area
As always course was in great shape, greens are fast, rough is thick, tee boxes pristine....fairways are the highlight, as it's the only course with bent grass in the area...views of the cityscape are beautiful.....it's a very flat course with only a little water, but plays 5-10 strokes harder than most courses in the area due to the rough, length, and well thought out and subtly challenging layout....by far the best course in the area
Links style.
This was the first time I've played here. I'm not a huge fan of links style courses. This course plays very tight. You have to be a straight shooter off the tee, no exceptions! My biggest complaint would be the amount of water the course holds. It did rain 12 hours before we played at 11am (less than 1") but it played as if it had rained for 5 days and nights. Nice tee boxes and fairways. First cut of rough is 4" tall and thick enough to lose balls in. Overall, I would play it one more time just to be fair about this review, but it will have to be when it hasn't rained for a couple of days.
Always great.....As good as I've seen it!
My opinion of this course is always very high so I am trying to write this review with little bias. As you know, if you have played this golf course, it is a great layout in incredible shape. If you have not, you are missing the best links experience of any in the bi-state area and beyond. The bent grass fairways are as lush as I have seen them. The bunkers have new sand, I can at least vouch for the greenside bunker on #4. This is a beautiful golf course! Lush fairways and great views of downtown St Louis skyline. Play it and may I suggest choose your tee box wisely. It ALWAYS plays longer than the yardage indicates so be kind to your fellow golfers! Play it forward!!
A definate play in St. Louis.
Very nice course, fair but challenging. Course conditions were good. Nice view of St. Louis skyline on several holes. The only criticism was pace of play. Our tee time was at 7:24 and it took almost 5 hours to play. The foursome in front of us were slower than molasses. There was a gap of at least two holes, we didn't see another group in front of them since early on the front nine. We commented to a couple of different marshals about their pace of play but no improvement. The starter seemd to know one of the guys in the foursome so they must be regulars. The slow player showed up in a Porsche, I wonder if he drives as slow as he plays golf. This messes up the course for the entire day.
the course was in great shape
the course was very busy it was a very nice day. the course played hard because of the wind. The pace of play was slow. the cart girls came around at a timely manner, and the consession stand was open which made it good.
Beautiful place, slow round
This is a spectacular setting and the conditions were excellent. The only issue I had was slow play. I understand that can happen, but I didn't see anyone from the facility trying to do anything about it. That was frustrating.
Great fairways, good greens and a quick round.
I really enjoyed the course layout. Not too much trouble off the tees but some challenging approach shots and lengthy holes. I loved the bentgrass fairways. For $30 this is hard to beat.
One of the best public courses in the St. Louis area
Always a great course! It is challenging, with a great layout.
Fairways were really wet but perfect shape
Tee boxes maintained nicely. Pin placements were very difficult . I don't mind a few hard ones but not 14 of them. No need to trick up a great golf course. We are amateurs trying to enjoy a day off. Other than that nice day on the links!
