Gateway National Golf Links
About
Gateway National Golf Club is the top public golf course in St. Louis. The course sprawls across gently rolling pasturelands crossed with ribbons of tall native grasses and sprinkled with mature cottonwood trees. There are also several sparkling lakes that dot the course, providing challenges on several holes. Although it's nowhere near the ocean, the golf course has a classic links layout with wood-tie bunkers and subtle but tricky mounding that is in the tradition of great British Isles courses such as Carnoustie and the Old Course at St. Andrews. The Gateway National layout even incorporates Scottish-style burns. The fairways are generous but they are lined with rough that will readily swallow errant shots. It is a long golf course at 7,178 yards and it even boasts one of Illinois' longest par 4s, the 482-yard fifth hole.

Slow go
Really enjoy the track, REALLY DON'T enjoy the pace of play here at all. So much potential and staff does care at all! Really a shame.
GATEWAY!!
Bent grass tee to green.... St. Louis skyline...use all your clubs..... Rewarded by keeping ball in play.... Can't spray it around or be short.
Great course for the money
First time at Gateway. The greens were excellent - putted true- and the fairways were decent - lots of divots to repair, but otherwise in good shape. Seems like they'd want to get right on getting those patched up, but someone else commented on it earlier in the year. They probably are waiting for their summer help to come on board. Generally four tee boxes to choose from - playing from the tips would be rough (7000+ yds!). A few negatives: One, no porta-pots out on the coarse. Not a problem for me, but for my wife, that's another story! Two, no maps, either on the scorecard or on each hole. A few had mid-fairway hazards that would be nice to have distance queues for. Thirdly, the bunkers - numerous is not a problem, but packed, sometime more mud/dirt than sand, is.
But I'd definitely go back and bring friends. Can't beat <$25 for 18 and cart.
Very nice place to play and great staff
Great course and very friendly staff. I always enjoy playing here.
Not bad for winter golf...but
First time playing at Gateway. Just coming out of winter, course is understandably still dormant and not in top condition. However I could not recommend this course to anyone as the fairways have divot holes everywhere. This is the worst course I have played in that aspect. There are so many the grounds crew will never be able to repair them all nor will they ever grow in.
First Round Post Winter
My buddy and I played here as the snow melted on a nice 55 degree day in early March. The course was soggy as to be expected, but you could still tell it was a course well maintained. While the fairways were understandably brown, they were still nice. Greens rolled truer than expected for the time of year.
I've played here before in the middle of the summer and the fairways are fantastic. Very nice links course. I'll play here as often as possible this season. The views with the Arch in the background are very nice.
Beer prices are a bit steep at $3.25/can.
Very slow pace of bad golfers in front of us
The course was in great condition and a fun and slightly challenging course but we went out as a twosome and where stuck behind a foursome that wouldn't let us play through which in turn made it a 4 -1/2 hour round which is rediculous for a twosome!
good exeperience
very nice course... difficult to guage distances off tee as there are not a lot of landmarks to use but hardly anything to ruin experience. seemed short staffed as no starter at 1030A. and they let singles of on a sunday AM. would definitely play again
One Of My Favorites!
It was a cool and even misty day to play, but we still found this course to be exactly what I wanted. Lots of trouble, long par 3's, some water, sand traps had water in them unfortunately due to weather. The ball sits up so nice on these bent grass fairways. Hit em straight and you will have a most pleasant game. It's also THE course to play when leaves start falling as there are very few leaves floating around on this course. Lots of highland grasses though and you're not likely to find your ball.
Long but wide
The course is fairly long but I really enjoyed the wide fairways on most of the par 4's and 5's. The greens were in good shape. The only negative were the tee boxes. Except for a couple holes, they are in pretty bad shape. Overall, we had a fun round on a nice course.
Excellent course
The fairways are like carpets and the course is very challenging. I would recommend the course to anyone.
enjoyed the views
Great for the price we got on golf now. Really enjoyed the layout and the great views of the arch. Will most definitely be coming back next time we are in the area
Unbelievable, best course in the area!!!!
Golf now hot deals pretty much dictates where my buddies and I will be playing. This course is by far the best course in the area. The progressive tee boxes give players at every level a great challenge. I was completely surprised at how dry and maintained the course was with the amount of rainfall we have received. WILL DEFINITELY RETURN...and maybe play from the tips next time!!!
Greens rolled more like a resort course in the deep south
The condition of the course was superb, For this area the greens were quick and rolled true. Liked so much I came back two days later & played again.
Gateway national
Course was in excellent. Fairways and greens in excellent shape.
Good value
We finished in 4 hours and that was with a slow group in front of us. Greens were a little inconsistent. The players really need to work on fixing ball marks; some greens fairly beat up. Same goes for divots on the fairway. Clubhouse could use some repair: drinking fountain and one sink were not functioning.
Overall impression: decent course that is probably suffering a little bit economically due to intense competition.
Beautiful Course, Well Conditioned
Great Course with views of the Arch and downtown STL. Advertised as a links style course....but if you've ever played real links courses.....this course is really not much of a links course.....still more in the parkland style. That said, it doesn't take away from the beauty and playability of the course. We played the back tee's (over 6650yds). The course is kept heavily watered and certainly doesn't roll out like a links course....so what you carry is what you get for distance. Allot of fairway cross bunkers that force decisions if you can't carry the driver 230+. Greens were well maintatined, but par threes heavily pitted from unrepaired ball marks. A fun, challenging track that I would recommend to anyone. A "must play" for St. Louis public courses.
Nice course, pace unbearable
I tried to play here on Sunday afternoon, 8/3, but ended up leaving after 6 holes due to the miserable pace of play. I was greeted at the first tee by a line of 6 carts waiting to go off, and ended up finally teeing off around 25 minutes past my scheduled tee time. Every time I finished a hole and arrived at the next tee box, there would be at least two groups still waiting to tee off. At that pace, I got through 6 holes in about 2 hours and 15 minutes. With only 2.5 hrs. of daylight left, I decided there were better uses of my time than playing another 6 (maybe) holes of golf, and drove in.
I have no clue what caused the backup, as all of the groups within sight seemed to be playing at an ok pace once they were able to tee off. This is the third time this has happened to me when playing in the afternoon here, and it's the last time I'll waste my money at this golf course.
As far as the rest of the course goes, the facilities are well kept, and the fairways/greens are in good shape. The bunkers are in bad condition. The course seems to do a better job managing pace in the morning (when I've gone out before 11AM, typical pace is 4-4.5 hours).
nice challenging course
It's one of the top 5 public courses in St. Louis area. Par 5 are long. Par 3 are challenging. Even from white tees some par 4 are long for a 10 handicap.
Great Course
Booked a "hot deal" for $36 on a Friday afternoon around 1. For this price, it's unbeatable in the area. For $60+, I'm not so sure. Course is LONG from the championship tees and is very tough if the wind is blowing. Luckily, there is a lot of room of the tees and around the greens. The length, wind and rough are the main defenses. The fairways were in excellent condition, best I've played in the area. Tee boxes had been aerated but were fine. The greens were sub-par and I was disappointed in them. Very soft, lots of ball marks and spike marks and didn't roll very well. I know St. Louis isn't an easy place to keep greens in shape, but Normandie and Crystal Springs have greens that are in much better shape. Very quick round, just over 4 hours with a 30 min lightning delay.
Overall, loved the layout and challenge and would highly recommend if you can get on for under $50.
