Hapuna Golf Course
About
Hapuna Golf Course stretches along the beautiful Kohala coastline before rising to over 700 feet above sea level. The snow-topped Mauna Kea volcano serves as a dramatic backdrop and there are seemingly endless views of the Pacific. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay collaborated to create a visually stunning links course that utilizes the natural contours of the landscape and silky fescue grasses. The design team has received praise for not only the challenge of the design but also for how seamlessly it blends into the existing environment. Palmer incorporated several risk-reward opportunities, especially with the par 5s, the14th is a good example. There are many ways to play this hole, which features a large ravine on the right and a wide, but shallow green. Long hitters can reach the green in two but short hitters prefer two shots and a par 3.

One of the Best Courses on the Island
We stayed in the Waikoloa area and were delighted to play many times on the Hapuna Golf Course. We find the staff to be very friendly and helpful. The course is very well manicured and challenging. The views can not be beat with many holes looking out over the ocean. The green fee includes your time spent hitting balls (as many as you want!) at the driving range. Overall, we feel this is a MUST PLAY course when you are visiting the Big Island.
Hapuna GC
Great bang for the buck.
Friendly staff and very accommodating.
Booked tee time on golf now and was not dissapointed at all.
Tough course even without the wind.
I would play it again anytime.
Great views
Great island experience. No oceanfront but ocean view is expansive. Fair fairways and fast greens. GREAT experience Oma calm day!!!
Excellent
Course is in great shape
Only complaint is a few of the fairways have cartpaths running through the middle of them
Got around in little over four hours
Slicker
Course was outstanding ,BUTT 5 and 1/2 hour round.started at two finished last hole at dusk! first 9 had two with us finished last nine with my wife. Waited on just about all 18 holes.
good course
I would rate it higher but at 2pm this place seems to shut down. Cart girl goes home and the club house was closed up along with restaurant by 6. Course was in really good shape and challenging from the blues. Good service while the employees are still there. Great views through out the course.
A beautiful design
Had another couple join us for a foresome and the pace of play was exceptional, a 1:45 tee time and complete at 5:35. The course was full of players which made it such a surprise that the pace was excellent. The fairways and greens were in great shape. An extremely enjoyable day
Excellent course
We have played Hapuna a number of times and it is our favourite on the Big Isle, challenging and interesting, friendly staff.
Great course!
A beauty of a course.
Great golf, great staff.
Beautiful course, views of the Pacific everywhere.
I'll be back!
Oh yeah...Plenty of challenge too!
beautiful weather
first 9 holes very enjoyable second 9 old back up. beer cart girl left prematurely.
Better value than Mauna Kea
Played Hapuna twice over last few weeks. I found the staff friendly, course in good condition (save for the odd green that had some issues). Cart came with 4 iced waters. Fun course, some great views, and for $80 with the GolfHawaii Discount card, great value for the money. Would play Hapuna again in heartbeat (when I can get back to the Big island).
Spend your money elsewhere
This could be a gorgeous course. Breathtaking views and a great layout, but there is a problem. The condition of the course. The "greens" are WHITE!!!!!! They are pretty much dead and filled with holes. You do not putt these greens, you hope these greens. The fairways looks as though herbicides have been dumped in places. Dead grass all over the course. The sand bunkers are little more than a dusting of sand over hardpan. The lips are fluffy, the rest is like hitting off of a asphalt slab. The "airiate" the greens here about every 6 months, but never seem to water them. The sand seed and fertilizer are always prevalent on the surface.
I live on the Big Island and there are much better places to play. Ones with real greens and tee boxes wider than 7 feet. Absolutely run down due to lack of proper supervision and maintenance by the course super and his/her crew.
Also, some of the holes are blatantly unfair. 2 For example. Many times the tee box is set up at the front edge. Less than 2 feet beyond that is grass 3 feet high. The hole is a par 4, but a lofted iron is required off of the tee at times or else the ball is swallowed up by the grass. Save your money and play elsewhere. The only positive is the staff. Some of the nicest people you will ever meet nywhaere, but too bad, even they cannot overcome the shortcomings of this place.
Fun course
Great views and a fun course to play. Hole 14 is tough. Uphill all the way!
Good course for the price
Got a good price on the internet so it was a great value. Not in the condition of Mauna Kea or Mauna Lani but a lot lower price. None of the holes stood out but the views were great being up at high ground. Large herd of goats on one hole. If you are looking for something for a reasonable price and in good condition go here. Only had 2 other twosomes on the course so I played in under 3 hours.
Great No-Beach Course
Great Arnold Palmer designed course that winds its way through some interesting Big Island terrain above that is mostly above the Kohala Coast HiWay. Arnie's designs always have these wonderful holes utilizing the existing terrain and some great risk-reward situations. Good challenge from any tees being played, as long as you select the tees with your ability. Higher handicappers should definitely play the regular (orange) tees or they will be overwhelmed with the difficulty from the tournament (blue) or championship (black) tees. Wonderful views of the Kohalo Coast. My wife rode along and loved it.
Great course
Challenging course, Beautiful view
But green condition is not good
Nice Hawaiian course
Nice course near the Hapuna Beach Prince Hotel
Complimentary bucket of balls, tees. Locals have a lower rate. Golf now offers a lower rate than walk ins. Had a nice round and would come back.
Many Holes have Ocean views.
For less than half the price of Maunea Kea ($75 vs $180+) after 1pm, you get over half the holes with great ocean view.....although not ocean front as MK has...but theres only 2 or 3 that are ocean front at MK. Both course are in fantastic shape, but if playing many rounds while on vacation, you wont be missing much at Hapuna. Course is very fair but will offer enough challenges from the back tees. Although I enjoyed and will return again, I wish it was better serviced with a drink/food cart...it wasnt there most of the time....and no halfway house....so bring your own stash of drinks and food. Golfshop also closed at 5pm just as I came in wanting to buy a shirt ot two...their loss....

May we also suggest you please contact Josh, our director of golf, for further information and explanation.
Aloha - We apologize for your experience and we want you made aware that the water company had to replace a pressure release valve (PRV) on the main line and the course was without water for 4 days while that was repaired. The greens suffered the most damage, as well as many of the tee boxes. Both are now recovering nicely but it will take some time.
We have also begun a weed eradication program on the greens at Hapuna. They have been infested for a number of years and we are taking an aggressive approach to enhance the quality of the greens and future overall playability of the course.
We thank you for your comments and hope that you’ll try us again as we continue to improve. It was an unfortunate week without water, however the greens are well on their way back to healing.
Mahalo.
