Hapuna Golf Course
About
Hapuna Golf Course stretches along the beautiful Kohala coastline before rising to over 700 feet above sea level. The snow-topped Mauna Kea volcano serves as a dramatic backdrop and there are seemingly endless views of the Pacific. Arnold Palmer and Ed Seay collaborated to create a visually stunning links course that utilizes the natural contours of the landscape and silky fescue grasses. The design team has received praise for not only the challenge of the design but also for how seamlessly it blends into the existing environment. Palmer incorporated several risk-reward opportunities, especially with the par 5s, the14th is a good example. There are many ways to play this hole, which features a large ravine on the right and a wide, but shallow green. Long hitters can reach the green in two but short hitters prefer two shots and a par 3.

Best Resort Value on Big Island
I've played most of the resort courses on the island including both at Waikoloa, Mauna Lani as well as Waikola Village and the RTJ course. For pure value the course was a steal at $100, but the track was also very well maintained, greens pure, nice challenge (I played Blue tees) and good views from high above Mauna Kea.
Silverbell to Hapuna via HIlo Municipal
Played other courses as challenging, loved the fairway approaches and hidden doglegs. The goats were an added treat as was our electric golf cart. Tricky in spots due mainly to line of sight and distances across natural hazards but hey, that's golf.
Beautiful Views - greens well maintained!
Generous forward tees for new golfers. As a women golfer, I found this course with some challenging holes but most that you can par or boogie, especially the par 3s. Staff extremely friendly. Back 9 have great views of the ocean. This is the 2nd time I played here and will definitely go back.
Great course- beautiful views
Love this course. Got my first hole in one. Played the blue tournament .
Course can get very windy.
Great practice facility.
Great value.
Top rated course in Hawaii with good reason.
Great course- great views. Excellent practice facility.
Love this course. Got my first hole in one.
Great course - played last year- it was crazy windy.
Definitely a top rated course.
Played the Tournament tees & found the course to be challenging but fair.
the greens and the fairways were in excellent shape. beautiful ocean views from almost every hole! will definitely play this course again.
Great course with awesome views
We teed off around 11 am and played a fast round on a beautiful course. The vistas were awesome and the course was in good shape.
Easy to play and good views
Course was in good shape, but pace of play was slow. No marshals on the course. Played behind 2 Japanese foursomes that did not take their carts on the fairway even though "cart paths only" was not in place. They ran to every shot and back again.
Even though I tried to explain to them it was OK, a marshal could have cleared up the confusion and all of us would have enjoyed the round more.
Great vews, a challeinging enjoyable golf experience.
The course offers a great golf experience, many ocean views, tea boxes, fairways are in great shape, greens are fast and undulating>
The staff both on and off the course are very friendly and courteous, and you feel very welcomed to be their guest for the day.
Really nice vistas and layout.
The course is excellent but greens somewhat unfair in that the pin placements on some holes were on ridges you could not stop the ball. If you like really fast greens then you have found them here. What a magnificent layout and the vistas were so good. How could you not want to play this gem!
If the wind is blowing hard, re-book your game!
This is a good golf course, but it was unfortunate that the day I played it the wind was howling mad. The course is on the north west coast of Kohala coast and sits on the side of a mountain with severe elevation changes, the course is exposed to the wind. Some good holes with nice views. The staff was polite even willing to postpone my round due to wind, but my time was limited. Best value is if you book it with Golfnow.com $70 for a 12:30 tee off time. You'd be crazy if you walk this course you need a cart!
WOW - Windy !
This is a tough review to give because we were dealing with I think 50mph winds ! There were very few people on the course and we were asked if we wanted to cancel and change our day of play but our schedule on the island would not allow us to do that so we gave it a shot.
We were staying in the Kona - Keahou area of the Island and had gorgeous weather over there for a full 10 days.......Even though the area of this part of the Island where Hapuna is, is not really far away - I think it was like an hour drive..........the weather was totally different with the trade winds. The course was in very good shape and looked beautiful but unfortunately we could not really enjoy as we wished......the ball was literally being blown off the T and you had to stand your ground to not get moved yourself by the wind.
When we were finished we would have liked to enjoy a cold beer and maybe a bite to eat but she said they have no such place - it apparently closed 2-3 years ago ???
Great course for the price
Seeing the water from a lot of the holes was nice. Open as well as narrow fairways. Putting greens were challenging. Definite play if ever in Kona again. Played 3 while on vacation and this was our favourite.
A beautiful course, nicely maintained, fitting as part of the Mauna Kea complex
A wonderful course, challenging without being unfair, great views on most holes
Greens were fast and fairways narrow
Arnold Palmer designed courses seem to have narrower fairways and require you to play from the correct tee. If not, trouble will be brought into play. The greens were fast but fair. At the GolfNow price it was good value.
Great track with wonderful vistas!
Windy day but subsided after about 5 holes. Front 9 has much more wind. Greens are a bit hard to read but manageable. Would certainly return for another round. Will recommend to friends. Only negative was the pro shop closed at 5:00 p.m.
This course has a lot of great views to the ocean and mountains.
Having a free range balls with your round of golf was a plus.
The staff was very friendly and helpfull. I wound play this course
again. The only thing that bug me is that we had to wait on very hole and in the fairway.
Beautiful, reasonable
Great course with ocean vistas, elevations and challenging layout. Lots of goats! Played in about 4.5, not bad for a resort course. We had a resi for 1/30/13 but two of us got sick so we cancelled, but I would definitely go back and strongly recommend this course.
WHALES AND GOLF TOGETHER
Hapuna GC is a an Ocean view course on the side of an Old volcano mountain in Waikoloa, Hi. I was told it's the sister course of Mauna Kea GC on the ocean.
Nearly every Hapuna hole you can see the ocean, and if you pause, one may see jumping whales.
Most putts moved toward the ocean, great shape and maintained course.
I would play this course Over and Over.
Nice layout. Some tough holes, and great views. Greens not in great shape
Played this course before and returned for another go of it. Well maintained, but greens were crusty and needed attention. Will play again next visit
