Heritage Oaks Golf Club - Classic 18

I have been playing this course a few times per year for 20+ years. There seems to be a fundamental issue here getting the grass to grow in. This is now two major renovations that have yielded very sparse turf grass. The rough has always been thin and spotty. After the recent renovation even the fairways are really thin. There are some collection areas adjacent to a few greens with really nice grass, so maybe it’s just not standing up to the cart traffic

The tee boxes as other reviewers have pointed out are embarrassing. The condition of the fairways does result in some tremendous role, which makes some of the very long park fours here more reachable.. Greens are the savior at Heritage Oaks. The greens are by far the most interesting feature of the course requiring strategy and precision. The greens are also in respectable shape.

The chipping, putting area and clubhouse are definitely the highlight of Heritage Oaks, so allow for some extra time to enjoy them.

Most of the greens were in very good condition, but the green speeds were a little slow. All of the tees on the par 3 holes had a large amount of unrepaired divots and there were no sand buckets on the tees. Not too many players will walk back to the cart to get a sand bottle and very few of the large number of walking players would even think of carrying a sand bottle. Many of the fairways had bad areas and there were a number of ropes on the course to redirect the players around those areas. On 16, you couldn't even access the fairway with a cart since the conditions were so bad.

When we reached the par 3 8th tee, the group in front of us was just walking onto the green. When they were done, we teed off. We were approached by a "Player Assistant" as we were nearing the green and were told that we were four minutes behind and that there was a backup of players behind us. We asked the "Player Assistant" what the pace of play expectation was since we had been on the course for just 1 hour and 45 minutes, and did not receive a response. We made the turn in less than two hours. We were keeping pace with the group ahead of us and had to wait on many tees up to that point. The Player Assistant needs some additional training.

There is no water or restrooms available on the course except at the one food and drink area that is near the middle of each nine.

Weather has been extremely dry and the course feels it. Had to club down one or sometimes two clubs. Looking forward to playing when it’s a little more lush.

Great pace of play. Although there are trees between holes I rarely felt like I was in jail and had to punch out.

Greenskeeper set the pins in places that were very difficult. Probably the hardest that that course could’ve played in my opinion. Big things are in the review back was how rude and unhelpful the starter was.

Course was in good condition, a few silver tee boxes were pretty bare. Could definitely use a much larger sign with direction from the 9th green to the 10th tee.

Pace of play was terrible and the ranger only arrived at the 18th hole and this was after 1:00. We started at about 8:40. Ridiculous that they were commenting about how we were 30 minutes over pace at the 18th hole!

Always love playing at Heritage Oaks. Love the course.

The challenge happens with the pin placements on the rolling, multi-tiered greens.

I last played here around 20 years ago when it was known as Sportsman’s. The course hasn’t changed from what I remember, just a good test of golf. The clubhouse and pro shop is new and very impressive. The driving range is nice and the balls are quality Titleist practice balls. The short game area and bunker are sizable and the sand is quality, not that thick beach sand at some courses. Place of play was excellent for a 7:50AM Sunday time. Our foursome of 2 walkers and 2 riders played in just over four hours. Our two big complaints are that the flags are all the same color, no way to differentiate distance , and they should of had some water coolers on some of the tees. Overall a nice place to Golf

I've played this course many times and after the recent upgrades I can see the difference on the course with the new irrigation and drainage, with no dead areas, and nice grass off the fairways. Many trees and brush have been cut back from around the water hazards. The wonderful new chipping range and putting green, along with the Trackman practice range makes for a great warm-up and round.

Greens were punched and they filled with cheap sand that had rocks which threw putts offline

I have moved from Maroon tees to white tees... still a very challenging test of your game.
