Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

Barely playable.

Have not had a chance to play this course in a couple of years as they were closed for renovations. I do like they added a driving range as I was needed. I wish I had taken a picture of the greens as they were horrible. They were covered in what looked like divots that had never been repaired for years. The greens will need to be completely renovated. Tee boxes were so hard you could barely get a tee in and just tore up with divots. Should never opened this year till they had gotten most everything fixed as I have never seen a course in this bad a shape. I rarely write reviews but really felt this one was needed as I would hate for other people to spend money to have the same experience.

New track, same problems

The course recently underwent a "refresh" I will call it. Most of the holes stayed the same. There were a few changes, and some worked and some didn't. If you are familiar with the original layout, old #1 is now 18 so once you check in plan on a long ride back through the parking lot down a gravel (dusty) access road back to the old #2 now the new #1. They do have a small driving range along the access road (not that you would know it since no signs or mention while checking in) I should have known it was going to be a slow round when the group in front of us waited for the entire hole to be open prior to hitting 3 of 4 tee shots into the weeds. I say weeds because weeds were everywhere. Through my round I had art least 4 times my ball was in a patch of weeds while in the fairway. I broke two wooden tees trying to get them in the hard ground. All and I mean ALL of the tee boxes were more divot than grass. The greens were not aerated but aeration would have been an upgrade. I don't think I have ever repaired more ball marks on a green in my life just to have a halfway decent surface to put on. I saw only one ranger all day and I mean all day 5 1/4 hrs. That guy just drove by and waved, never checked with us about our round. The one saving grace was the beer cart came by several times.

In summary bad conditions coupled with super slow play make for a horrible golf day. This was the worst golf experience of the season...

For context I am 53 yrs old 12 index play white (mens) tee and play 3 to 4 times a week.

Disappointed

Played this course before it was reconfigured and after. Not a high fan of the changes.

My biggest disappointment is with the overal condition of the course. Fairways were in rough safe along with tee boxes and greens. I will say the San traps were well maintes and certainly fair. Your personal GPS devices won’t work with the changes made on the back nine and the carts do not have GPS. Paid $42 on Golf now and really think for the condition of the course that is too much. Course has decent bones and pretty good layout just needs to TLC.

I use to enjoy this course but got rid of 16. The tee boxes are in bad shape, weeds in fairways and fringe. I was hoping that the renovation of the course would improve the conditions of course it got worst.

Still needs a lot of work

Tee boxes were so hard that you needed a hammer to put a tee in. The whole course extremely hard (it was like hitting off a mat) and was badly in need of water - made the distance on my drives look great, but the inconsistency was a killer. Greens were awful - thin, dead and bumpy. Sand traps were nice and fluffy. Unless they are planning on building a new clubhouse, the 1st and 18th hole placements make no sense. Definitely will not be back this year - maybe by 2024 it will have improved.

Settlers Hill Built on a Dump and living up to it

This course has really gone downhill. We played it because the “made improvements” and wanted to se the changes. Lots of new sand traps that were in excellent condition but in weird spots in middle of fairways. General condition of fairways and greens was terrible. Paying over $50pp with cart was way overpriced for conditions.

Course itself is nice.

The course itself if nice, the fact that the ground conditions are as bad as they are makes it very difficult. The ground is unbelievably hard, and 1/3 of the course is dead/browning. I like the layout and the pace of play but dear lord this place needs a tsunami to soften the ground and green this place up.

Ruined remodel

Course reopened last year after a remodeling, and was appalled at how poor of a shape the course was in. The greens were especially terrible (on #3, there was a large trench of missing grass right next to the hole), and the fairways showed evidence of poor soil conditions. Bunkers were in decent shape, but that was about the only bright spot in conditioning. The core design is very good and a fun mix of challenging holes. The conditioning was too much to overcome though. Only 3 staff on duty for the entire course, and the food/beverage options for a Friday afternoon were straight up garbage.

Needs Some Rest

The new layout has great potential and the green complexes remain some of the most challenging in the area. But the course is not ready for the volume golf that is being played there. Tee boxes are a mess, some you can’t get a tee in the ground and others can’t find enough grass to get a level setup.

The course could use at least a half season to just recover and mature in the new areas. Oversees the greens and fairways and with water and fertilizer your value and enjoyment would escalate.

Somehow worse after renovations

This used to be my favorite local course. I was very excited to hear how much they were investing into improvements and new amenities. While I think the new features are nice, the old layout of the course was much better. The most glaring issue I have now though is the way they maintain the course now that it's reopened. It's almost as if they ran out of money in the budget for it because half the tee boxes either are torn to shreds or so hard you can't even get a tee into the ground. Very disappointing that so much money was invested into this course yet there is a large concensus which feels it's a significant downgrade
