Settler's Hill Golf Course

About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

A little rough
We played Settlers for the second time this year and it was a little disappointing. The tee boxes were rock hard and would accept a plastic tee and the greens had been aerated not too long ago and were slow and bumpy. Also the range was closed. It's a unique course meandering through the dump, forest and grasslands. However I don't like the changes they made a couple of years ago - you now have to drive 500 yds to get to the first tee which used to be hole #2 and you finish up just as far from the clubhouse on what used to be hole #1. They shortened the tough par 5 fifth hole and made it an impossible par 4. They replaced the old downhill par 3 16th overlooking the sheriff's
compound with an uninteresting flat par 3.
The plan is to build a new clubhouse by the new first hole, but no one knows when that will happen. They used to have some nice online deals, but it's a little pricey now. We'll still probably play it once a year since it's nearby, but not more than that.
Worst course I have ever played
Not just a few ball marks on greens. They look like a hail storm hit em….tee boxes are just as bad & the mesh for newly planted grass is coming up all through the fairways. This course was completely renovated a few years ago and opened too early. Now is beyond repair
Needs More
Course was in rough condition - greens were either aerated or beat up by a ton of unrepaired ball marks. Pace of play was decent. Sadly you pretty much have to bring your own food and beverage - no on-course water or food. We saw cart person twice - both times on the front nine - and very limited selection and only candy bars for food.
I love this course
Before the remodel, I was a member at settlers for 3 years. I played the course right after the remodel and most definitely wasn't ready to be open. It has improved every year, and yesterday I was really impressed. Any issues they have are being addressed. . The greens were in really good shape and rolling really well. It's a beautiful course and I recommend it to anyone!
Pleasantly suprised
This course is great for the price. Greens are slow, but to be expected. This course should have much higher reviews. Better than Potawatomi, Tana, and definitely better than mill creek
Vistas
Always a fun course to play, the range is a definite plus….its tight w some really fun holes… if you’re on point, you can play well here..not too long and rewards come w accuracy… definitely recommend a twilight/Sunset round.
Could be a great course
Played this several times but only once since they changed the layout. Carts are basic, no gps, no glass. Just a cart! Needs to be updated.
Course condition is fair. They’re working on patching fairways with sod but many bad areas.
Since holes have been changed or moved personal GPS don’t reflect the holes accurately. Maybe course needs to update something for this to be correct, not sure.
Soft greens with many ball marks
Great course for the money. the greens and teeboxes need seed and maintenance. A bunch of ball marks on the green that make it hard to put.
Settlers Hill-I’ve settled on my last time playing there.
Course conditions were terrible. All types of ground under repair. The course needs water and turf maintenance. The pace of play was abysmal. There were no rangers in the course to move players along. The first nine took 2:50 on a weekday. We called off the round after a 20 minute tenth hole. There are too many courses in the area to put up with these conditions.
Fun surprise
Really fun course with unique layout and striking views on a few holes. Condition was good considering amount of play - except for ball marks that dotted the overall nice greens. I probably fixed 3-5 per hole. Definitely will return - hope conditions hold.
Great course - great value
The tees, fairways and greens were in excellent condition. It's been particularly hot of late so it was a treat to see how green everthing was. They did make a change to the holes in the past couple years (hole number 2 is the new number 1 and hole number is now number 18). So don't rely on your GPS to function properly. I advanced mine to mirror the holes I played and it worked for me (I have a Bushnell).
Could be Good
If they put up signs on each green asking people to please repair ball marks, the course would be much better. People do not take care of this course and the result is it gets a bit run down despite a fantastic layout.
Great Value, Fun Course
Loved my afternoon out at Settler's Hill - it was perfect in all respects. Value, layout, pace, sunshine! Thank you.
Needs major work
I love the challenges on certain holes, and overall the layout is nice. But lack of a clubhouse is a real bummer, and without drinking water out on the course anywhere, you better remember to bring lots to drink.
The worst part is the shape of the course. Fairways and greens were decent, but tough lacked grass in many spots, and outside of the fringe, it was a hot mess otherwise around greens. Straight dirt and rocks were abundant, making an up and down impossible in many cases.
Whatever they had planned for a.new clubhouse and course improvements must have been delayed.
