Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

They have practically murdered this course!
Once a decent track, this course has fallen victim to neglect and mismanagement. The greens are in just OK condition. The bunkers are good. But the tee-off areas and the fairways are in AWFUL conditions. The ground is hard, divots from months ago are still there. There is no glimpse of the new clubhouse that was promised. Multiple reviews I wrote have not made any tangible results. What a tragedy!
Good Course
Enjoyed playing this course and it was in
good condition.
This course is in horrible condition. The ground was rock hard. I repeatedly had trouble putting my tee in the ground, and the fairways and greens weren't any better. The greens were super patchy, and there were divots everywhere. They didn't even have any sand in the cart to fill them. There were also small rocks in areas without grass not that far off the fairway. I'm not one to usually complain about the condition, but this place was awful. The layout wasn't too bad and the staff was friendly. The main problem I had with the conditions being this bad was that I payed $65 for it. If it was a lot cheaper, I would understand, but there are courses with similar price points not too far away from this one with much better conditions.
Great layout
This course has very make-able par 3s....but has some really long, difficult holes. If you score bogey on 10 and 11....consider it a well played hole. Greens....for the most part were in excellent condition. The fairways are going to need some TLC in the off season.
Beat up
Beat up course for it being closed all last year for improvements.
Barely playable.
Have not had a chance to play this course in a couple of years as they were closed for renovations. I do like they added a driving range as I was needed. I wish I had taken a picture of the greens as they were horrible. They were covered in what looked like divots that had never been repaired for years. The greens will need to be completely renovated. Tee boxes were so hard you could barely get a tee in and just tore up with divots. Should never opened this year till they had gotten most everything fixed as I have never seen a course in this bad a shape. I rarely write reviews but really felt this one was needed as I would hate for other people to spend money to have the same experience.
New track, same problems
The course recently underwent a "refresh" I will call it. Most of the holes stayed the same. There were a few changes, and some worked and some didn't. If you are familiar with the original layout, old #1 is now 18 so once you check in plan on a long ride back through the parking lot down a gravel (dusty) access road back to the old #2 now the new #1. They do have a small driving range along the access road (not that you would know it since no signs or mention while checking in) I should have known it was going to be a slow round when the group in front of us waited for the entire hole to be open prior to hitting 3 of 4 tee shots into the weeds. I say weeds because weeds were everywhere. Through my round I had art least 4 times my ball was in a patch of weeds while in the fairway. I broke two wooden tees trying to get them in the hard ground. All and I mean ALL of the tee boxes were more divot than grass. The greens were not aerated but aeration would have been an upgrade. I don't think I have ever repaired more ball marks on a green in my life just to have a halfway decent surface to put on. I saw only one ranger all day and I mean all day 5 1/4 hrs. That guy just drove by and waved, never checked with us about our round. The one saving grace was the beer cart came by several times.
In summary bad conditions coupled with super slow play make for a horrible golf day. This was the worst golf experience of the season...
For context I am 53 yrs old 12 index play white (mens) tee and play 3 to 4 times a week.
Disappointed
Played this course before it was reconfigured and after. Not a high fan of the changes.
My biggest disappointment is with the overal condition of the course. Fairways were in rough safe along with tee boxes and greens. I will say the San traps were well maintes and certainly fair. Your personal GPS devices won’t work with the changes made on the back nine and the carts do not have GPS. Paid $42 on Golf now and really think for the condition of the course that is too much. Course has decent bones and pretty good layout just needs to TLC.
