Settler's Hill Golf Course
About
Settler's Hill Golf Course sprawls across a diverse landscape that ranges from windswept highlands to mature woodlands. The course actually sits on the site of a former landfill but you would never be able to tell with its rolling topography that has become its signature characteristic. When playing, you'll be transported from the Scottish highlands to the forests of northern Michigan without even having to leave Chicagoland. Links-style and parkland holes are interspersed with water to create a test of your skills you won't soon forget. The greens have their interesting quirks and they are framed with deep bunkers and the rolling fairways demand accuracy. Besides the challenging round and affordable rates, Settler's Hill Golf Course's west-central location in Batavia near the Fox River also makes it a popular choice for meeting friends for a round.

My review is more to GN
They changed the layout so GN is not in line with the holes you play. 18 is now the first tee, the the 5th hole is the 12th I think now. It is completely different. FOR the players now they are making a lot of repairs right now. Normally it’s in ok shape. But they are putting in the work.
If I could give 0 stars I would. Never play here.
DO NOT, under circumstances waste your money at Settlers Hill.
At $75, this place is a joke. It should be under $50, and even then I’d think twice. The price-to-value here is embarrassingly bad.
They overbooked the course through GolfNow and still didn’t even have enough carts for paying customers. We had to stand around for 30 minutes just to get a cart and head to the range. That is bush league stuff for any course charging premium rates.
The pace of play was a disaster. Five hours and 25 minutes for a round, and the ranger was basically nonexistent until we only had four holes left. By then, who cares? If you’re going to pack the tee sheet, at least have someone out there doing their job and keeping groups moving. Total failure.
And the course conditions? Brutal. This place is a dog track. Yes, it’s early in the season, but that only excuses so much. The greens are one thing. The fairways, tee boxes, and overall turf conditions were awful. It looked neglected, beat up, and nowhere near worth what they’re charging.
Complete waste of money. Settlers Hill is overpriced, poorly managed, and in rough shape. Save your $75 and play literally anywhere else.
Good Redesign But They Need to Hire More Workers To Upkeep the Course
The redesign of Settler's Hill has made it a really interesting course. However, the conditions of the course are spotty at best. I really like the tough holes on this course after it's redesign. There are 6 or 7 holes that will really challenge you to make par. There are also a handful of holes that are easy and give you chances to get birdies. My BIG issue with this course is the vast amount of bare spots on various different parts of the course and the AWFUL tee boxes, which are littered with hundreds of divots. It's more than obvious that the owners of Settler's Hill aren't putting much money into maintaining it. This is a very solid golf course, which could be great if they tried to maintain it. I got a "hot deal" on Golf Now for $50, but I would pay $75 to play this course if they actually gave it some tender loving care.
Charged $71, not worth $17
Lived in the area for over 25 years and this was our go to course due to value, layout and conditions. Moved away about 4 years ago and heard they had put several million dollars into the course. Looked forward to seeing the improvements. Not sure how you spend millions and actually make a course worse than it was. Bring a cordless drill in your bag for the tee boxes. They were as hard as a rock. Literally took several minutes for the 4 some to find a spot soft enough to get a tee into. Fairways are supposed to have green grass on them correct? Someone needs to the course superintendent that. Greens, horrible. Do NOT waste $71 on this pasture.
Slow and Hard
Over a 5 hour round and it was obvious they have no irrigation because the grass was all yellow and the ground was so hard it was a struggle to get a tee in the ground.....
Poor conditions
What a great layout, but conditions are ridiculously bad. I am trying to figure out what they are going for as the course is like playing on concrete. You just miss the fairway and the ball is gone. The greens have hundreds of ball marks and damage everywhere. If this course was maintained it may be the best in the area.
Course has a wonderful lay out with some challenging fairways and fast greens . Course has many brown patches but it is September . Staff was wonderful .
Horrible experience
Absolutely terrible experience. Course was absurdly absurdly backed up, got through 4 holes in 2 hours. Course was in bad shape. Insanely overpriced too
Good Layout / Bad Conditions
The entire course, tee boxes, fairways, greens and rough are in poor shape. It’s as if they have no water to use on the course. Rough is very spotty with large bare spots. Greens are extremely firm with a vast amount of ball marks. Fairways are just ok but very firm and little thatch. Better bring a hammer to put your T’s in the ground on the t boxes. One good thing are the trap conditions. They were raked and the sane was good.
I would avoid playing this course until the conditions improve dramatically.
Terrible Course Conditions
Played twilight rates with cart on Labor Day.
-On course concession stand was closed.
-Saw the drink cart leave the course at 2pm, never appeared again.
-A significant number of the range balls were cracked or full broken.
-Tee boxes, fairways, and greens were incredibly hard. Almost broke multiple plastic tees just trying to place it in the ground and had to try multiple spots to find any soft ground.
-Expect to play shots at least 20 yards short to account for cart path-like bounces on the fairways and greens.
-Tee boxes , fairways, and greens in very rough shape (see photos).
-Almost every single hole was a straight-shot. Very little variety.
-Friendly staff.
Spend time and money elsewhere
I’ve played Settler’s Hill quite a bit in the past and never seen the course in this bad of shape. The tee boxes and greens were pretty terrible on a lot of holes. I noticed pin placements based on cutouts were in the same general area which doesn’t help. There’s comparable courses in the area that are in better condition.
Settlers Hill
Settlers has a terrific layout but shame on the golfers who play this course and do not fix their ball-marks or sand their divots. Some of the visit views are great. After three years, the fairways are still thinly covered and could use a good aeration and over seeding.
Good challenge for all levels of play.
Hittem straight
Settlers Hill is a fun golf course. The tee boxes and greens are a little on the used side but overall the course is in great condition. Bring some water, unless you went in the clubhouse, things are scarce. There aren’t any ball washers on the tee boxes. I will definitely play here again.
Bring your A game as there is elevation all over this course
Good and Bad
Positives: really fun layout with lots of hills, elevation changes and water.
Cons: this is my second time playing here and the course was in really really bad shape. To the point of not being able to physically put a Tee into the tee box. Greens were also rough.
Overall a nice course we previously played early in the season has really been hurt by such poor conditions. For the price ($70) there are plenty of better options.
