Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

- slowest round I have played in years. Too may slow players and no marshal. wont go back
You'll love this course if you like bumpy greens
I played 99% of my golf at Stonewolf in the early 2000s when it first opened. It was an amazing place then. I have no idea why they switched the nines from the original design Jack intended. It makes no sense at all. The greatest player of all time should have his course layout respected and celebrated. The greens were all a consistent speed and quite fast, but very bumpy from a poa annua infestation. The pin positions were tucked into corners of greens and on slopes that made playing on a windy day almost unenjoyable. Lagging a short birdie putt because you don't want a 3 foot comebacker on the bumpy greens is not my idea of fun or good value. The bunkers were dragged but with a deep grooved rake. I found a bunker 4 times. Each time my ball was in the middle of a deep groove, so basically I had a buried lie each time. On 2 of the bunkers, the "sand" was mud and my wedge buried and I barely got the ball out. The other 2 bunkers had a thin layer of sand that was dried and crusty and my wedge drop-kicked. The zoysia fairways are dormant. Dormant zoysia normally plays fairly well but these fairways are completely matted down so every lie in the fairway was extremely tight. I'll be back but not until the middle of the summer. Definitely not worth the $60.00+ that I paid today.
Boo
The layout is good. Some greens were bumpy and some bunkers were in bad shape. It’s been in better shape in past
Recovering
Greens are still recovering from the past 2 years and at least half of them are in poor shape for a supposedly better JN design course . They're trying to make the course easier by removing many sand raps but as of today they're all ground under repair. Tee boxes and fairways were in good shape . Still recommend playing but beware of a few issues like greens Andrew slower pace of play than should be.
Tough Track
The Golden Bear has designed another great but tough track especially in the windy conditions that I played in. The fairways could use some water and the greens were less than perfect, however, this track is well worth playing. If you’re a high handicap player bring a few extra balls as you will surely lose a few.
Interesting course
The greens were lost to fungus. Bunkers no sand Dirt tee boxes were great and faraway to were above average.
