Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Great layout
Played for the first time and was really impressed with the overall layout of the course. Very unique. Would definitely come back. Staff was extremely friendly. Pace of play was a little slow but it was noon and hot deal time of day. Greens could use some work. Lots of ball marks from heavy traffic and they had just aerated they greens and off the green as well. Ran into several situations where putts would bump or no grass to chip from. Minus the conditions the overall layout and uniqueness of it really makes up for it. Definitely helps to play with someone that has played before especially through the first four holes. Fairways and tee boxes in great condition. If the greens got to where they should be then this course would be pristine.
Greens and hazards need work
Like always we enjoyed our round, however we noticed that the greens were much more chewed up than usual and being the beer league golfer that I am, the bunkers were club chewers with all the rocks and debris in them. We have been playing here for 4 years and always enjoy it. We will keep going, without a doubt.
Stonewolf Golf course
Good tough course. Just wish the greens were in better shape but still a very good course. And all workers were super pleasant and friendly.
Disappointed
Im new to the area and heard good things about Stonewolf. After playing it, I was really disappointed. Greens are fried. Fairways need mowing. Could it be the heat? Don’t think so, I played other area courses that are in excellent condition. Some of the concrete cart paths at Stinewolf are crumbling from sinkholes. Sinkholes deep enough to break.a leg. The course layout is good, but the overall condition reminds me of a course suffering financially, on its last leg. Not worth the money. Just because Jack Nicklaus’ name is in it, doesn’t mean it a nice course. I won’t pay to play it again.
Loved this course
First nine holes were great. The last nine holes were very challenging. I like a challenge though. We will definitely play this course again.
Great track
Course is in great conditions greens were nice not a long course it’s where you hit it not how far you hit it on this one
Decent Conditions But Room For Improvement
Overall, I thought the course was in decent shape. From when I played Stonewolf last in February, the greens have made a complete turnaround. When you play Stonewolf, remember it is a Jack Nicklaus design. Which means you can be severely penalized for hitting just a marginal shot. Most of the greens are set at angles with bunkers in front and back.
Good:
• The fairways were firm and you got good roll on your drives.
• Overall, the greens have made a significant improvement from February. Only concerns are the pock marks in the front of the greens and there is some stress on the 15th green.
• With Covid-19, they did allow you to sit on the patio and order food from the bar area. The area was very busy and they could have used another person helping.
General Comments:
• The greens are a mixture of bent grass and poa annua grass. Which means your putts may oscillate as it tracks toward the hole and your ball does not break as much.
• They have finally changed the nines and renumbered the course. This was a long time coming because it never made sense to start your round trying to figure out how far to land your ball just short of the ravine.
• Not sure what is going on with the tee markers. Some holes have the newer tee markers, some do not. Very strange. On the new tee markers, they all look white, so it is a bit confusing. The color of the tee is on the side of the marker, which makes it hard to determine what color the tee is until you are even with the markers.
Needs Improvement:
• It appears the greens are overwatered. The front part of most greens are filled with pock marks, from most balls landing in those sections and leaving a “muddy” repair mark.
• They have removed the sand from numerous bunkers on the course, however, they have done nothing to make them grass bunkers. They need to do something as these are very unpleasant to the eye. Some are marked ground under repair, some are not.
• They need to make sure there are yardage markers on each par 3 tee. Some of the markers were overgrown with grass and could not see them. They should edge the grass around these markers.
• The course does have stakes at 100, 150, 200 and some 250-yard markers. However, they are ALL green with 2 white stripes. Why? Make them red, white, blue and yellow. Only makes sense.
Fast Greens
Great course, greens were true and fast. Really nice course, you will use every club in your bag. Staff was outstanding and pace of play was excellent-will definitely come back.
Great Jack Design
Any chance you can play a Nicklaus designed course you're in for a treat. So many courses built in the 90s value distance and being really long. This course is much more about ball placement and iron accuracy. Many par 3s are very challenging and for many par 4s you can have success leaving the driver in the bag. The greens can be challenging and roll fairly true. The best public greens go to Gateway but these are very solid. You wind through some houses along the way but the back 9 is much more wooded. If you're feeling it you can score well, if you're pulling or slicing your driver it can be a long day. Staff is great and I think overall the pace is fairly solid. I have to think more on this course than many others that I play and I think that adds a great element to the game. The course wont blow you away but it's a very solid choice considering the price. I'll play this over Tapawingo and for at least $20 less per round.
