Stonewolf Golf Club
About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

View Tee Box #1 Photo submitted by Sundayfun on 10/21/2012
Iowa stop
Always try to play a Nicklaus course on our trips, again not disappointed, very cool layout with turns to the right and left, some holes you had to think about your shot before you pulled the trigger. Greens were great, nice speed, fairways used zoysia grass allowing the ball to always be sitting up. If in the area, stop and play.
Stonewolf
Course was challenging and fun. Tee boxes and fairways in great condition. A lot of the greens have issues.
Course needs work, especially the greens.
Love this Nicklaus golf course, but the greens this summer have been in terrible shape. Today the greens on the back 9 were just awful- lots of mud patches and no grass areas on and around the greens.. Bunkers were also in very bad shape and not tended to by grounds crew. Hopefully the staff puts more work into fixing this gem of a course, most especially the greens. Last year 2017 Stonewolf much better than 2018.
Great layout but condition leaves much to be desired
Played as a single today. Course had a decent layout. In fact , many blind shots making it challenging being a first timer there. In there defense , they have received much rain and it looked like they were working on the bunkers so there was ground under repair issues. I’ve played other courses around here that are in much better shape and get more play. Greens were in need of care. I would play here again with the hope that they take care of the course better.
Front nine a little beat up
We started on the back 9 which was in great shape. Unfortunately the front 9, which had some awesome hole layouts, had some really beat up greens. Would love to play the course again when the front 9 is in better shape.
Worth the Drive
I hadn't played Stonewolf in a couple years & was blown away with course conditions. It has always been a great layout & when it opened the Nicklaus design was one of the nicest courses around the area, but the last few times I've played it the conditions were subpar. This year it is spectacular! Fairways & greens were perfect! They had just had a couple inches of rain so there were some wet areas & the bunkers were a little wet or hard, but other than that it was great!
Must Play Course
Stonewolf, for me is one of the top 5 public courses in the St Louis Metro area. Both fairways and greens are in great shape.
Good layout
There was a fivesome ahead of us which surprised me that it was allowed but no Marshall present to direct traffic
Great course
Even though the course was wet it was very playable
Stonewolf
Ever since Management put Kerry in charge here 2 years ago the course has been getting better and better. Even with the last 2 weeks of 90+ heat the course is in excellent shape and Jack himself would approve of the subtle changes being made to improve the bunkers . If you haven't played here it needs to be on your top places list soon
Good Course, Watch for Specials
A drive from St. Charles, but a solid course design. I had a Golf Now coupon that made it more of a value since I normally will not pay a $45 greens fee. This course makes the golfer shape the tee shot to navigate most of the par 4's. Greens were in great shape, just a little on the slow side. The only negative was that the bunkers were really baked dirt, not sand. Otherwise, from the appropriate set of tees, this is a solid test of golf for all but the elite players as it is only modest in length.
They do a great job at Stonewolf. Course in very nice shape and is a challenge for all handicaps. Great value!!
Fallen on hard times or what’s going on??
Tee boxes, fairways & greens OK for the most part, but cart paths are broken and crumbled and the bunkers have fallen into SHOCKING disrepair!
This once-proud gem now looks like a disheveled rundown muni track. It made me sad.
Quirky
This course requires several rounds before you would know what the do. For example, I had no idea what to hit off the first tee. It said I had 240 yards. I hit a soft drive and was 30 yds long, in rough, severely downhill lie to and uphill green. Traps were a mess. Waited on every shot on a weekday. Too much is just blind.
Very quirky opening stretch
Good golf course overall. Greens were pretty shaggy with a lot of poa. Bunkers appear to be under construction. Overall a good value. Course gets much better after the first 4 holes.
