About
Stonewolf Golf Club is one of only four courses designed by Jack Nicklaus in Illinois and Missouri and it is also one of his only public access designs. Nicklaus created a shotmaker's layout with a variety of different holes. He also incorporated his signature style of bunkering, which you'll remember for their shape, design, and placement. This is not a golf course where you'll be able to just grip it and rip it. Thoughtful strategy and careful club selection off the tees are essential for doing well. Stonewolf Golf Club opens with a tough trio of holes, ending with a short par 4 that requires a forced carry to a severe green that features a tricky elevation change right in the middle of the surface. There is also a lateral hazard on the left, and five bunkers bordering the right side.

Fast Greens
Great course, greens were true and fast. Really nice course, you will use every club in your bag. Staff was outstanding and pace of play was excellent-will definitely come back.
Great Jack Design
Any chance you can play a Nicklaus designed course you're in for a treat. So many courses built in the 90s value distance and being really long. This course is much more about ball placement and iron accuracy. Many par 3s are very challenging and for many par 4s you can have success leaving the driver in the bag. The greens can be challenging and roll fairly true. The best public greens go to Gateway but these are very solid. You wind through some houses along the way but the back 9 is much more wooded. If you're feeling it you can score well, if you're pulling or slicing your driver it can be a long day. Staff is great and I think overall the pace is fairly solid. I have to think more on this course than many others that I play and I think that adds a great element to the game. The course wont blow you away but it's a very solid choice considering the price. I'll play this over Tapawingo and for at least $20 less per round.
no structure
While playing there were random people driving all over the course and jumping on holes and playing (cutting lines) also, was told we could order food and drinks, and there would be a cart girl. We ordered our food and they forgot to make it after 1hr. Called for a cart girl for drinks, they said she would be there in a few minutes and she never came. Very unfortunate because I was having high Hope's for this course for my 1st time playing here. Unfortunately I'd give it a 2.5 out of 5. Course was in o.k shape nothing to wow you either. Maybe in the summer times things will be turned around and they will be on top of things.
Greens Need Some Work
I played in February and I don’t like to be too harsh on a course during the winter months.
I thought the tees and fairways were great. The problem they have is with their greens. Their greens are a mix of bent grass and poa annua.
The poa annua grass is splotchy, bumpy and ruined the putting experience. You had no idea where your putt was going.
The staff at Stonewolf said they plan on trying to get rid of the poa annua and re-seed those sections. I would expect the greens to improve by Spring/Summer.
SLOOOOOW play in November!
Course is great, in great condition for November. The biggest drawback continues to be slooooow play! It has been that way every round this year at Stonewolf, no rangers anywhere, always a foursome Lollygagging in front of you, never letting anyone through. Todays group was 4 geriatrics dressed liked they were on an arctic expedition, and played slower than molasses in January, playing for pink slips. Mind you this is a Tuesday afternoon 4 hours to get it done, what is a Saturday like, ooofff!
Nice
Enjoy playing here. For my skill set it's a challengeing course.
Decent course condition. Great layout.
Nice course for a public track. With hot deal it was a steal at $16. Greens had spots on them and little bumpy but good fast speed. Just some areas of dead grass in places in fairway also. But for the money it’s a good value
Fungus Amongus
Every green afflicted with fungus a real bummer. Super crowded for a Tuesday at noon. Had to go off of 10, 5 minute wait on every tee, no rangers in sight. The STL bumpkin still doesn’t know how to fix ball marks! We played the back 9 a second time due to no less than a dozen waiting to go off of number one!
Greens need help
Like many courses in the area, the greens are in rough shape. They weren't as bad as I expected, but putting was a little difficult. I only paid $18 for the round so I'm not upset by the conditions and I knew what to expect. The pace was slow due to a foursome holding up the threesome in front of us and a few doubles and single behind us. We could have used help from a marshall, but it seemed like only one person was working yesterday.
Unfortunate Conditions On An Excellent Nicklaus Layout
I wish someone had warned me of the poor course and green conditions on GA. You can tell this is a nice Nicklaus layout, BUT the greens are in severe need of fungus remediation. The greens are largely black and green and un-puttable. The bunkers are not maintained consistently from hole to hole. I wanted to like this course but couldn't. I hope they get it together.
Cart path only
To many hills for cart path only.not for older people, the up and down the hills are not for older people.and the greens are not in good shape also.the fairways are in good shape.
