Course is in terrible condition
Greens are awful. Fairways are awful. Staff is friendly but there is a definite lack of maintenance on the course.
price reflects condition unfortunately.
Didn't play here last year but I've been playing here over 10 yrs. Conditions are worth the 45 bucks to ride. It's really unfortunate to see what used to be a nice course go down hill.
I wanted to love it
As the title says, I really wanted to love this course as my father is former Navy. The course overall is really in tough shape. The greens have a lot of weeds and bare spots with some holes as well. The fairways and tee boxes are ridden with weeds and bare spots. Although the groundskeepers are out there keeping it cut, it is just really in rough shape. In contrast to other public course and their pricing in the vicinity, they should be charging no more than $30 for 18 holes, That said, it becomes a catch 22 in that, if they don't charge more, they'll never have enough revenue to make it better. At the end of the day, in comparison to other public courses in the area, it's 18 hole value is about $30/round.
Gtg
This course could use some love but definitely playable
Can't beat the 3pm and after deal.
The course is pretty rough BUT I wasn't looking for a premium place. I wanted a place that was not crowded and OPEN. Not 1 house in sight. $30 with a cart for 18 is a deal. I've already got 2 buddies to confirm playing here soon.
First time here. Will be back all summer long
First time ever playing here and I’ll say with time this course will be great! It’s the beginning of the season but I saw workers out there taking care of the fairway and greens! The staff is friendly! When i first walked in they tended to me really fast but i will say don’t book on GolfNow but actually call in ahead especially if you’re active duty or veteran because it’s wayyyyyyyy cheaper! The pace of play! Amazing i went on 18 by myself and was not rushed by anyone because nobody was there! So if you want to play at your pace relax and have a great time with the boys this course is the place.
Potential
The course overall was in bad shape. It was impossible to putt on most of the greens and there was tree and bush debris all over the course. This course has the potential to be one of the best courses in North Chicago with the proper staffing and maintenance crews. The staff there does a great job with what they have but are unable to hire due to the hiring freeze. Would play there more often once that are staffed correctly and course can be maintained.
Good layout, But don't waste your time or money!
I'm really sad they let this course get this bad. It has a nice layout, but this course has been getting worse every year. Last season the course had terrible greens. overly grown rough that was so bad you lost balls you shouldn't have. This course you to be a good track.
Getting Better
Conditions have drastically improved from earlier in the Summer. The rough has been cut and is very nice. Some of the greens and fairways are in rough shape but I still enjoy playing the course.
What a dump. We loved it.
This is usually a pretty decent course but for whatever reasons, it has fallen into disrepair and is in the worst shape of any course we've played this year. The greens are slow and the tees, fairways and greens, especially on the front side, are severely damaged by grubs. Curiously, the sand traps were well-tended and in nice shape.
Regardless, we had a great time; probably as a fun a round as any this year. It just goes to show, life is what you make of it.
On its way back
After I booked my time I read the reviews and regretted my purchase. But when I got there I was surprised. Yes the tee boxes were in rough shape and the fairways were burnt out but playable. I was able to take a divot with the irons. The greens were in decent condition. The balls held and actually left ball marks. They were a little bumpy but playable. The rough has been cut and is back to normal levels. Bunkers were in good shape. The layout is fantastic. Overall the course needs some improvements but they are going in the right direction. Hope they keep moving forward and looking forward to see the progress next season.
Terrible Shape
This is the worse course I have played in the last 10 years! Nothing has been watered and weeds all over the tee boxes and fairways.
STAY AWAY
Course is absolutely atrocious. They charge $48 for a round. I wouldn’t even be willing to pay $20, course is so horrible. It being a golf course for the military (MWR) they don’t even charge by rank. What a shame what they have done to this course. DO NOT WASTE YOUR MONEY OR TIME HERE.
Next Year?
Pro shop admitted the course was in bad condition due to neglect. Apparently someone was let go and not replaced. Consequently, the course has not been maintained. Fairways had bare spots, the rough hadn’t been cut for quite awhile, many tee boxes were overgrown with weeds, and several greens were unplayable. Yet, they still charged us $48 a piece. $25 would be pushing it in my opinion. Supposedly, they have some equipment on order so greens can be aerated and other issues can be addressed. I would skip this course until next year in hopes they get it together for 2025.
Don’t waste your money
Played the course yesterday with a friend. We were one of 4 groups out on course and that should have been our first clue. The course has not been properly maintained. The rough is extremely deep and hasn’t been cut regularly, so there are clumps of grass everywhere. The front 9 is definitely in better shape than the back 9. The greens on the front are in average condition. Many of the greens on the back 9 are in horrible shape. They have large dead spots and turf separation in various places. The General Manager told us after the round that they had stopped cutting the course for several months…it shows! On top of that, they are charging full price for the round. You would be better off going to nearby Foss Park to play, it’s in much better condition.
