Course does not appear to be getting regular maintenance
Love this layout. Challenges every skill level. First the fairways in ok shape. Rough was terrible, alot of areas were rock hard. The greens were receptive but the amount of ball marks on these greens was horrible. Very sad because again this track is a great layout.
BUCKET LIST MUST
Oak Grove is definitely a bucket list must for all. Layout design 9.5 out of 10. The only wrinkle is hole 11. For the average golfer, too tricked up. Course was in excellent condition considering the recent rains. Make time, its worth the trip and enjoy the nature and local wildlife.
Greens and course good shape
One person working the club house, doing double duty checking in players as well as working the bar. Didn't seem too happy about it.
Windy, so there were a lot of downed leaves making it tough to find the ball even in the fairway, however that's golf in the midwest in the fall. My clubs didn't work right which made it a tougher day than usual! LOL A few holes had old ball marks around the cup that appear to look like they were there prior to the hole being cut. Should have been repaired when new hole is cut..
Slowest round of year. 5:15 minutes. Brutal
Brutally slow and no rangers around to speed things up
Another good outing at Oak Grove
Great course and quite challenging on some holes. Winds and some muddy areas detracted. Not crowded. Generally good shape with only a few heavily divoted areas. Good value. Recommended always. Outside of club house building needs attention badly.
Enjoyable to have a course not surrounded by houses.
Played in cool intermittent rain and wind. Pace of play was great and course generally remained in great condition even with rain. Greens remained very playable. Hole No 11 is an unusual layout, study before playing..
Could Be So Much More
Course is set up very nicely, however the condition was only fair. The greens were soft and held approach shots well. However, it's obvious that the people playing never heard about fixing ball marks on the green. Come on MAN!!
Lots of sand traps, that I got to visit a bit to much. It wouldn't have been bad as I feel I'm a good sand player. Oh wait, I said sand player. That's right 1/4" of sand in a bunker doesn't make a sand trap. Sand traps are the most expensive thing on a golf course to maintain. You can tell times are tough at OGG. Either fill 'em in or put sand in them, not gravel.
Slow pace
Very slow pace no starter was told people had tee times of 10:28 10:30 and 10:35 front was slow but joined a three some as a two some . Yes I know a 5 some but we still waited on every hole. Great course and great shape but pace was brutal
Wonderful Course surrounded by Farmland
Wonderful Course off the beaten path. Staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Had a 6:35 tee time and all greens rolled before we arrived. Greens in wonderful condition. 3rd time playing in a month! Thoroughly enjoyed.
Pace was horrible !!!!!!!!!!
No rangers or starter ?? We went to tee off at our tee time and a group went ahead of that was late ?? Ruined the pace 4:48 for 18 won’t go back !!
Outstanding Layout in need of TLC
The layout here is fantastic. About as challenging as a course can be. Regardless of which tee boxes you choose, at some point you will need your best distance and ultimate accuracy to shoot a reasonable score. Note that I didn't say "shoot low" With the rating at the back tees at a stunning 75 and a slope of 144 on a Par 71 course..., there are few who would expect to shoot low... reasonably low is really all one can ask here.
One favorite was #11
Approaching the blue tee 464 yard par 5 #11 I thought, well heck this shouldn't be too hard. Wrong. It's the longest 464 yard par 5 I've ever played with a tight, hard dog-leg right encapsulated fairway with trouble left and right all the way to the green. The tee shot requires essentially a 200 straight away carry with have about 50 yards to work with on the other side of the creek. Then you have trees to navigate over or around on the approach. Frankly, I was happy to take a 1 putt 7 with two penalty strokes. Those were just two of the 7 total penalty strokes I took at Oak Grove this day! Accuracy is a must.
Condition wise, the Tees and Fairways were as expected during a long hot summer and not nearly as bad as earlier reviews purported. The bunker sand were pretty bad and really needs to be cleaned out. On the 603 yard Par 5 # 6 I was in the left bunker in 3 shots and proceeded to splash several large stones toward the flag along with the ball which came up short of the green. You don't really want to have to clean stones off of the green but it had to be done for anyone to putt. Had my first of four 3-putts for an 8 there.
It's unfortunate that Oak Grove is so far off the beaten path because it's clear that they struggle financially. The clubhouse is worn down and outdated inside and out and all around. The grill was lacking help and there was no beverage cart running at all on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a course packed full of golfers. That makes it a difficult decision to play and only the course itself will bring me back.
Bottom line, it's a great golf course with a layout better than most. I'd play it again and again but it's a haul and it's not a place I can relax comfortably in. On the plus side, we have already decided that it would be a great stop for a stay and play few days in the Lake Geneva region and we look forward to returning to Oak Grove.
Hang in there guys and keep the course in good shape. We hope there is a generous benefactor that will see Oak Grove for all it can be and bring it back to the future.
Will Not Return!!
EXTREMELY SLOW PLAY! - due to no starter, rangers and a staff that didn't care. Waited 10 - 15 minutes every hole before we played the hole. Got so bad at hole 8, we were waiting for the group in front of us along with the two groups behind us. At that point we decided to quit, since we were on track for a 6 hour round. Talking to the manager on the way out made no difference, he had nothing to say, not even an apology. Also, the course was very beat up, no divot repairs anywhere. Poorly run by Golf Visions!
