Wonderful Course surrounded by Farmland
Wonderful Course off the beaten path. Staff extremely friendly and welcoming. Had a 6:35 tee time and all greens rolled before we arrived. Greens in wonderful condition. 3rd time playing in a month! Thoroughly enjoyed.
Pace was horrible !!!!!!!!!!
No rangers or starter ?? We went to tee off at our tee time and a group went ahead of that was late ?? Ruined the pace 4:48 for 18 won’t go back !!
Outstanding Layout in need of TLC
The layout here is fantastic. About as challenging as a course can be. Regardless of which tee boxes you choose, at some point you will need your best distance and ultimate accuracy to shoot a reasonable score. Note that I didn't say "shoot low" With the rating at the back tees at a stunning 75 and a slope of 144 on a Par 71 course..., there are few who would expect to shoot low... reasonably low is really all one can ask here.
One favorite was #11
Approaching the blue tee 464 yard par 5 #11 I thought, well heck this shouldn't be too hard. Wrong. It's the longest 464 yard par 5 I've ever played with a tight, hard dog-leg right encapsulated fairway with trouble left and right all the way to the green. The tee shot requires essentially a 200 straight away carry with have about 50 yards to work with on the other side of the creek. Then you have trees to navigate over or around on the approach. Frankly, I was happy to take a 1 putt 7 with two penalty strokes. Those were just two of the 7 total penalty strokes I took at Oak Grove this day! Accuracy is a must.
Condition wise, the Tees and Fairways were as expected during a long hot summer and not nearly as bad as earlier reviews purported. The bunker sand were pretty bad and really needs to be cleaned out. On the 603 yard Par 5 # 6 I was in the left bunker in 3 shots and proceeded to splash several large stones toward the flag along with the ball which came up short of the green. You don't really want to have to clean stones off of the green but it had to be done for anyone to putt. Had my first of four 3-putts for an 8 there.
It's unfortunate that Oak Grove is so far off the beaten path because it's clear that they struggle financially. The clubhouse is worn down and outdated inside and out and all around. The grill was lacking help and there was no beverage cart running at all on a beautiful Sunday afternoon with a course packed full of golfers. That makes it a difficult decision to play and only the course itself will bring me back.
Bottom line, it's a great golf course with a layout better than most. I'd play it again and again but it's a haul and it's not a place I can relax comfortably in. On the plus side, we have already decided that it would be a great stop for a stay and play few days in the Lake Geneva region and we look forward to returning to Oak Grove.
Hang in there guys and keep the course in good shape. We hope there is a generous benefactor that will see Oak Grove for all it can be and bring it back to the future.
Will Not Return!!
EXTREMELY SLOW PLAY! - due to no starter, rangers and a staff that didn't care. Waited 10 - 15 minutes every hole before we played the hole. Got so bad at hole 8, we were waiting for the group in front of us along with the two groups behind us. At that point we decided to quit, since we were on track for a 6 hour round. Talking to the manager on the way out made no difference, he had nothing to say, not even an apology. Also, the course was very beat up, no divot repairs anywhere. Poorly run by Golf Visions!
Light Tee Sheet great pace of play
Played in slightly over 3 hours starting Tuesday mid-morning. Course is in decent shape.....very wet from some recent rains. The greens were cut that morning but are much slower than other area courses. Because of the dampness they were also a tad bumpy. Practice range was a swamp but hitting off grass. Overall course conditions have deteriorated the last few years. Slightly over 3 1/2 stars now unfortunately poised to go below that. $30 value wkday $40 value on wkends more than that you'll probably be disappointed. Avoid if possible when tee sheet is crowded as it will back up; with first timers having a difficult time navigating around the track. Great fun interesting layout to play and the 11th hole you have to play at least 3 or 4 times to get the hang of.....I love this place and highly recommend it.....just wish it wasn't such a drive/haul to get to Harvard.
Beautiful wooded setting
Our first time playing, went on recommendation of a friend. Quite a long drive for us (1hr 15 min). Course was not in great shape, had to find grass on the fairways to play from. Quite a few blind shot holes and # 11 .... to say could be better laid out is an understatement. Staff was SUPER friendly and accommodating. Will probably not go back because of the drive time, and can find courses closer to home for the money. Nice setting and clubhouse.
Will Never Play This Course Again!!
EXTREMELY SLOW PLAY. Waited on every hole 15 -20 minutes just to tee off. No rangers at all, so groups doing whatever they wanted, like waiting until the group in front of them reached the green before they would tee off, thus giving them more time to stand around and talk or look for their balls out of play. Paid for 18 holes, but had to quit on the 8th hole when not only were we waiting for the group in front of us, but so were the 2 groups behind us. At that point we were on track for a 6 hour round. Upon leaving we searched around for a manger to tell our story. We asked if the ever have rangers, he said no, and showed no concern nor did he offer an apology. The course was also very beat up on the tee boxes and fairways, especially, with no divot repairs being done for some time. This isn't the first time we have issues with a Golf Visions course. Definitely will never return or play another of their courses!!
Must Play
Nearly 60 miles from my home but play here 6 plus times a year
Great value
Working on bunkers but other than that course in great condition
2 some, played front nine in an hour
Ran into groups at turn but still played back 9 in 90 minutes
Okay option...
For $36 this is a decent option...but u get what u pay for in service (its golf visions afterall) and other little details. Greens rolled well and they recently cut the rough (which they don't do that frequently). I would rec if you are looking to spend under $50 but call ahead to see when they last cut the rough because it can get US Open length due to golf visions being so frugal with operating costs.
Layout is fun but can feel a little tricked-up at times. Best part out there is usually the greens. Very pretty scenery and ambiance.
Everything good.
Green fairway conditions is good green is littlebe fast, anyway Igor a
good experience
Hidden Gem
Course was in great shape. Wish there was a beverage cart on this hot day , with no drinking water on course.
Great course.
This course is a gem. Easily a $80 dollar round if this course were closer to chicago. Surprising how well kept the course is.
Always a good experience....
I suppose I have played Oak Grove dozens of times over about 15 years, never really had a bad experience. Golf Visions does not allow more than one staff member much of time so one must be patient to get service at the bar or pro shop depending on where staff might be at that moment, which is my only knock on the course. Expect bent grass at its finest, bunkers are not always up to snuff.... so steer clear.
