Fantastic Course
Worth the drive! Incredible course, greens and fairways are absolutely perfect. They also have wild turkeys roaming the course. Really nice time playing the course and enjoying the scenery.
Hubris Cards A Snowman
You're index is a 10 and you look at the score card and think... 6600 from the Championship tees... I can handle that. WRONG, especially if it's your first time here. So play from the whites/tournament tees unless you're carding less than a 10 on your index.
The greens feel like you are walking on a sponge and are fantastic (11.5 on the meter). The best I've played on this year. The holes were cut to perfection. I had one putt where half of my ball was over the cup and it still failed to fall. My playing partner couldn't stop raving about the course.
When you're done enjoy a cold one with a view of the 6th fairway and the monserous tree that sits right in the middle of it and try not to play the course again... I dare you. Only one knock... why the sewer covers in the middle of the 15th fairway? It's like a pimple on your high school sweethearts face the night of prom (I never went to prom).
Play this course.
Great Layout And Tees for All Levels
While over an hour drive from my house, I always find Oak Grove a very good test of golf. You should definitely choose the proper tees. The first 2 holes are very long for the average golfer from the Blue tees 15 or over should move up). Definitely need to manage the course properly. Conditions were excellent and pace was fast. Highly reccomend this course.
Very Nice Course!!!
The weather was not perfect that morning because it rained the night before and into the morning but it made the round much more enjoyable between myself and another friend since there were hardly anyone out there and we were very surprised how dry the golf course considering all the rain we had!
By the time we got there, the course was partly soaked especially part of the fairways but was very surprise that the greens were very dry. Excellent drainage system on all the greens!!! The course is well maintained and in excellent condition!!! Very beautiful and some holes are very challenging especially the 11th hole! There was only one staff at that time and he was very helpful. I'm glad I was not granted a rain check because I called prior to going there to both the golf course and golfnow if we can be excused that morning because of the rain storm that was going on where we live. I live about an hour away from the course and I'm glad my request was not granted because it turned out to be a beautiful day and we had the course almost to ourselves!!! Too bad this course is way away from us or I will keep coming back!!! Absolutely recommend this course!!!
long and tough
great course ,bring your range finder or buy a yardage book, 1st time play up one tee box
Excellent, challenging but fair. A first class venue.
Oak Grove is a real treat to play. Why? Because it is a great lay out in excellent shape. Beautiful scenery: mature trees, hills, tall grass prairie land, a covered bridge, ponds and lots of wildlife like Red Tail hawks, deer and wild turkeys. Fairways are well bunkered but generous. Greens are good sized and pretty quick. Clubhouse has a bar and restaurant that serves typical 19th hole chow. You've got to play this course, you will know what it's like to play a first class private club.
worth the drive
Very challenging with errant shots dissappearing into fescue areas Faster than average sloping greens. Clubhouse not anything special but staff was extremely friendly.
Awsome golf course... pace of play a different story
Great golf course in the middle of no where....Its about a half hour from Rockford and McHenry! The golf course is a challenge... Make sure you play from the right tees or it could be torture... They have some of the best par 5s I have ever played. Number 6 down the hill is just wow... It does not play 600 yards at all... The negatives ... there are a couple.... The sand traps were dry with hardly any sand... Pace of play was horrible almost 5 hours on a Saturday afternoon with hardly anyone on the course. There was a group of members in front of our twosome and would not let us pass them to join a 2 some in front of them... Overall, it was great day on a great course!
Great course. Holds all 5 tees well. Beautiful setting. Could easily be a 41/2 to 5 star course
Played on a Wed morning beautiful day and a beautiful course. We play the blue tees and had all we could do at that length. Back tees are pro level. Course should be considered a gem. Built in late nineties it just does not seam to get the praise it deserves. Great value at $44 with cart.
4 1/2 hrs on Sunday - probably average for the course? did not see any rangers.
Nice trail. Wish it was closer-but worth the 1-1/2 hr drive! Could use some better yardage markers on the par 3 tee boxes. And lack of drinking water on the course is a challenge!
very well maintain course and good value
Really enjoyed playing the course. The course is well maintained. A good mix of easy and difficult holes. My second time playing the course. I enjoyed it both time.
Fun, challenging course.
Course is well maintained. It is out in the country and you get a feel that you are a long way from Chicago. Not much of a clubhouse, but the golfing is great!!!
The course made you think off the tee
First time playing the course and will be back. Very nice layout and made you think off each tee in where to place the tee shot. Nice change of pace from the cookie cutter courses. Very affordable price for a great course. Go Play!
A Beautiful day at a great course
This is the second time I have golfed here. The fairways were in
pristine condition. The course is very challenging from the back tees. This is a thinking man's golf course. Placing your shot on several of the holes will yield a good result.
awesome!!!
This is a hidden gem. I've played here many times, and believe me, it's worth the trip. Great layout, always great conditions, and nicest staff you will find anywhere.
Do yourself a favor and play Oak Grove in Harvard
This course is a great value.
This course is challenging with many great features. Many bunkers that do not drain very well even with mild rain - shallow and hard sand. Range available but leaves a bit to be desired. Overall, great value.
Playable course with one tricked up hole.
Course was in overall good condition with a good pace of play. The only drawback was a lack of drinking water available on the course.
a hidden gem
a heavy morning rain stopped when we arrived for our tee time. expecting cart driving restrictions, we were surprised to learn of none. course drained exceptionally well. plenty of course maintenance being performed while we were playing. some blind tee shots and some long par 4s were challenging, but overall our group enjoyed playing. we'll be back
sprawling track
Great difficult course from tips.....usually quite windy.....hard walking course
A Real Sleeper
It's 8:30 AM and there are three cars in the parking lot.
You folks in Northern Illinois/ Southern Wisconsin are missing out on a very special place to tee it up. This tract, if it was located in my part of Texas, would be slammed.
The course was originally developed about ten years ago. A huge 5000 employee Motorola plant was built in the area, and this upscale venue was built to support the anticipated boom. The huge plant shut down after only a few years, but the championship golf course is still here.
These 18 holes are a challenge. Several of the longest par fives play directly into the wind. There's plenty of variety with tough par 3's and medium to long par 4's.
The course is in excellent condition. The greens are as smooth as glass. The fairways and tees are full and green.
The course is located in a bird and wildlife sanctuary. There are many wild friends out on this course, but they stay well hidden in the rough.
We were fortunate enough to play with Walt, a member and regular player.
I highly recommend this beautiful course. They have special rates for seniors, and on GolfNow.
