What a waste
This use to be a wonderful course for the money there charging and the conditions won't be around much longer. And where is the ranger we had two threesomes who at best shot well in to the hundreds and still spent 10 minutes each lining up every putt
Not good
Value for money was excellent but the place is run down. Cow pasture fairways and greens were not trimmed . Won't be back
Needs A LOT of work
I knew that when I played here it wasn't gonna be great but I didn't think it would be this bad. The clubhouse is very rundown and old, the practice green is kept long, tee boxes uneven. I will say that once on the course, I enjoyed the layout and thought while slow, the greens rolled well. Granted it was a weekend, but in no way shape or form should this golf course be charging more than $35 for a round. If they improve upon maintenance, I think people would enjoy the layout.
No no no
The “old man” the owner is the rudest person I’ve ever met. I was treated very poorly by owner and staff. Course is in bad condition, found over 10 balls in rough from poor management (that’s a plus). Overall don’t waste your money.
WORST COURSE IN CHICAGOLAND AREA
What a compete waste of time and money. Course was in terrible shape, the owner (the old man) is beyond rude and is stuck is his old ways. Not to mention the carts damaged my club by falling from cart because of the weak straps (several times). I was beyond furious. NEVER AGAIN.
Greens super slow
Course has nice layout. But unfortunately there are no fairways. It's all rough. The greens need to be cut. You need a driver to putt on greens!!! Pace of play is excellent, due to course being empty.
Very disappointed. Course in poor shape. They are letting this course go. Carts need maintenance or replacement. Price is great, but for just a few $ more there are much better courses available.
pace of play Hickory Hills GC
Very nice course for lesser skill level players. Great bargain.
The only negative is no rangers to speed up play on occasion.
Played there several times and older group of men with no concept of golf etiquette on letting faster groups play through when the course is totally empty in front of them. When questioned the group stated "we play here all the time why should we let you play through". We skipped a hole and completed in 3 hours. Otherwise a terrific bargain and will return
Unkempt and neglected
This course may have been the worse course I have experienced. The staff is nonexistent, it took twenty minutes to find a worker to just check in. The course itself was terrible. The fairways were grass length was longer than most rough lengths at other courses. Only red or white tee boxes and again long grass. Playing this course is not worth the 15 dollar hot deal.
A $20 value at best
Hickory Hills has numerous issues. That being said we need a few of these courses in Chicagoland to remind us of our golfing heritage and how fantastic our public golf scene is.
This review is constructed so you know exactly what you are getting into as a first timer.
Paved extremely bumpy cart paths in lines of play with some running up middle of fairways or crossing in front of the greens - check.
Dangerous walkways/slippery floors in clubhouse and around the halfway house - check
Tree encroachment issues and plethora of old 2 foot high tree stumps not removed - check
Fairways are the length & consistency of rough on other courses - check
Browned out bumpy velcro slow inconsistent green conditions with clover areas & a lone dandelion in the middle of one of them - check
Tight extremely claustrophobic somewhat confusing routing with protective fences around back of greens or elsewhere - check
All around bumpy conditions with your ball taking strange bounces - check
My arrival was friendly and pleasant in the pro shop. Starter was very attentive and the gal in the halfway house on course was nice. Decent beverage/food pricing after the 4th/8th and 15th holes with bathroom. Water jugs on course. No lockers or showers. No warm up range. Dark bar/food area....outdoor patio under renovation. Pay attention to where you park upon arrival as there are a number of areas where your car can easily be struck by errant golf shots.
I was greeted by jackhammer sounds chipping off the exterior of the clubhouse patio for my 1st tee shot. With the renovation work going on the cart tunnel is closed which requires you drive halfway down the 18th hole to gain access to the parking lot to load clubs onto your cart. Areas in and around the clubhouse are extremely tight and dangerous so you need to pay close attention to your driving skills....and numerous other areas on course as well.
Pace of play on a Tuesday was horrendous at 5 1/2 hours plus despite teeing off at 10am. A five-some was allowed a few groups ahead of us.
If you need a place to get in some swings or take a novice this is the place for you. Make sure your expectations are very low and you'll be fine. There is a "place" for tracks like this and you just have to laugh/put blinders on to dream what this course was like in its heyday.
I wish I could report more positive things to say about my experience.....many of the greens already have brown areas....very dried out/slow/bumpy/inconsistent and mid afternoon I could actually see imprinted dry sponge footprints in the greens from previous players that day? All of the greens desperately need a full aeration and a ton of water. Shouldn't they be spending money on improving the course versus the clubhouse patio? With so many issues to correct it's probably not worth it?
HHCC has been around a long time but I'd quit the game before I'd return. I love playing a course never seen. HHCC does have it's "place."
It is a good course for the money if you like treeline and hilly this is the course for you
Hickory hills
Pleased with the course and it’s condition for it Being November! Had an issue with the first cart I was assigned and the lady inside spent 10 minutes on her cell phone before she realized I had come back in. Overall the course is pretty easy. I enjoy the hilly layout and is a hidden gem just outside of Chicago! Will be back again!
Would love to play this course in the summer!
It was windy and cold! But, that’s not the courses fault. The course is awesome. Can’t wait to have a go on it next summer. The club house feels a bit long in the tooth but not bad for being 100 years old!
Lots of hills
If you like hills then you will like this course. Hidden gem, but easy to find. Greens a limitless slow but very nice.
Luv Hickory Hills CC
If you like old school layouts - THIS IS YOUR COURSE!! Hilly, woody and fair I thoroughly enjoyed myself. Very surprised how well they cleaned up the ash trees with only a few dead ones left. This course has it all: challenging tee shots that are tight that go into wide fairways, shots over ravines, elevated greens, etc. Take number 18 for example - a super short par 4 but the base of the green is literally plugged with thousands of failed approach shots from people not gauging the elevation.. Look past the fairways and realized this is how golf should be played - in hilly woods. I thought I was in Michigan a couple of times. NOT ON SKY CADDIE, though, but on Golf Logix.
